Disclaimer: Grimdark is in no way trademarked by me (Dreganius) or, to my current knowledge, anyone else.
Outraged by the utter lack of skulls in Minecraft (Skeletons excepted), and other general typical gothic/macabre themes, I took it upon myself to create this dark, gothic, and, well, grim pack. The name is based entirely off the quote from Warhammer 40,000: "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only... War".
This is the WIP thread, and eventually the release thread, of the Grimdark pack. You will see that I have borrowed elements from other texturepacks, and I will credit them accordingly, however I will make many changes to the original textures to such a degree as they will be barely recogniseable. During the WIP, you will likely see textures from either the Gerudoku pack, or the Steampunk pack. These are in no way mine and I take no credit for them, nor will they be present in the final release. In each picture I post, I will state what textures are my own, if I have used another texture as a base, and whether the textures in question is at completion or not.
Oh alright, fine, I'll just start posting pictures.

[*:vhjdrftm]Mossy Cobblestone, or as I call it, Skullstone.
[*:vhjdrftm]Torch, shaped more like Braziers.
[*:vhjdrftm]Smoothstone texture WIP.
09/04/11 - Water, Dirt and Grass, Gerudoku water texture used just for testing of colour.
10/04/11 - The general terrain.
10/04/11 - Glass, Cobblestone, Cloth.
02/05/11 - Playing with the UI.
PLANS:
Grass: Much more yellow, more of a "dead" feel. "Mossy" Cobblestone: Rotting flesh along with the bones found in the normal Cobblestone block (Rotting Skullstone anyone?) Dirt: No real idea yet, will be darker coloured to look more like grave-soil.
Sand: Trying for a "wasteland" look with the sand. Trees and Leaves: Dead. If I can figure out how to make it look good with block textures, I'll make the leaves into lifeless branches. Bricks: Falling apart, cracked, crumbling. Water: "This is... It's green!" - Commander Shepard Hoes: Scythes. Bows: Crossbows.
I have more ideas, but I have to brainstorm them a little more before I'm satisfied enough to say which I've picked.
Thank you for reading. I hope you like the idea of this pack.
Got a nice Leaves & grass theme, with the grass and foliage colour in relation to biomes.
Changed Cobblestone to more of a cobbled stone look.
Changed Mossy Cobblestone to the skull stone.
Edited the Dirt texture.
Made the new Glass texture.
Finished Cloth texture, but more on that in a later update. Have to colour them all.
Sand texture finished.
I loved the old cobblestone, I'd love if you make the old cobblestone like the old one, but without skulls. It makes it seem more murky and dungeony, unlike the new cobblestone.

The thing is, if it was the normal Cobblestone texture you would get tired of seeing it, and Mossy appears in Dungeons anyway. I really want to go for a more Catacombs look in mossy, and a more Medieval/Gothic castle look for normal Cobblestone.
I'm also planning to make that texture the background for the menu. Finally, you can expect some bone-skinny UIs coming sometime in the future.
Will definitely be keeping an eye on this... Probably not something I would use all the time, I prefer more neutral sorts of packs usually, but looks very interesting.
I would like to apologize for the lack of updating to this texturepack. I have run into a rut in terms of real life problems and inspiration for it.
That said, I am also planning to work on a high quality generic Sci Fi texture pack, as I've noticed a massive need for a good looking one (No offense to other texture artists, I just feel a lot of them are... lacking).
I am behind this pack fully and might spout ideas randomly in an attempt to feel like I'm helping.
Speaking of which , I think that blue torches would be really interesting. Black torches with blue flames are just.. I really can't describe them as anything other than ' sexy ' .( I'm actually more fond of various shades of red , but this is one of the few things that breaks that. ) Snow , when you eventually are confronted with it , could be replaced with ash , slightly darker , greyer.. Maybe speckled a bit.
Few suggestions , really love the concept and I'm expecting big things from you.
Wow, very nice. Esp. the torches and the moss stone. I haven't quite thought of something but the transparent properties of the cactuses(ii?) would be good for some kind of brambles or thorns of skulls with thorns etc. The Viking Pack turned 'em into rosebushes, which is fairly similar.
The buttons are looking really sleek!
Not so sure about that thin red line as the selector though, I think it needs more flair (if it's something you haven't changed yet, just ignore this :tongue.gif:)

Will snow be snow?
Thank you for that wonderful idea.
Snow, hm, I suppose I will likely keep it snow, but if I think of something more dreary, I will likely switch it to that, yes.

Curse PremiumWest and North Freeport also here on the MC forums
EDIT: I'm considering changing the skullstone texture to replace Mossy Cobblestone only, for I intended it mainly for use in dungeons and catacombs.

Curse PremiumLove the idea and competely agree with you as regards the abscence of gothic theme packs, so look forward to watching this progress.
Should eventually be awesome with the new lightning to be introduced in the next update. Skulls and lightning...Yay! :smile.gif:

Good use of dark colors without everything looking muddy.
Most of the RPG/Medievel packs are always trying to go for video-game style RPG's.
But never the oldschool tabletop gritty dungeon crawler stuff.
Good work!

Curse PremiumHeh :tongue.gif:
This is looking great so far! I agree that there is an absence of Gothic packs. You seem to have filled that gap quite nicely though!

( No pressure. <3
