Hi all! I know the title of this thread is terribad but I couldn't think of anything better to describe what this is.
Basically what I've done is extracted the original textures from the JAR and began separating each block texture into it's own individually named layer in a PSD to make it easier to find and edit each individual block.
The goal of this project is to make it easier for aspiring texture pack makers to get into it. Opening the textures is kind of daunting when you first look at the cluster**** of boxes in Terrain.png. I originally started doing it just for myself but after 2 hours of separating each block, naming each layer and grouping them I figured some other people could find this useful.
Anyway, hope this helps anyone wanting to try this out and people who didn't think of it.
I should mention to anyone that doesn't know that Layer grouping in PSD documents is only suppored in Photoshop and furthermore, when you're done making your changes you need to save it as a PNG and flatten the image else Minecraft won't recognize it.
P.S. If you guys find this useful I'll finish the project and sort out all of the materials for everything.
P.P.S. Also, There are a few textures I couldn't figure out the names of, If you know them please post here and I'll edit the file. They are in the unknown blocks group.
P.P.P.S. Last (I promise) if you have any suggestions for better grouping of the textures tell me. I don't know how easy things will be to find with my grouping methods to other people.
Should add that opening a PSD requires Photoshop, and that you'll have to Merge Visible the layers in order to save it as a .png file, because Minecraft won't recognize the PSD.

You don't need Photoshop to open a PSD. You can open them with both GIMP and Paint.NET (Though you need to install a plugin for Paint.NET)
Mind you neither one of those supports layer groups so all the layers will just be in one long list.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
I was thinking of doing this myself (though as an .xcf file for GIMP-- can Photoshop open those?) but singe you've done it, I don't have to. I see you have some don't knows in here, so I'm going to correct what I can and post it here, okay? Most of your don't knows are leaves, btw, and you mislabeled grass. (All of the stuff that uses biome colors is grayscale, fyi.)

Ahh that would explain it. Please correct the mistakes you can see and I'll repost it with credits to you :smile.gif:

Yeah, I just corrected a few things. I'm pretty sure I'm mostly right, lol. Here. It seems to have saved fine as a .psd, good to know GIMP can do that.

I appreciate the effort, but GIMP doesn't save groups. When you open that in photoshop it is just a giant wall of layers. I'll take the corrections you made and amend mine with it. I'll still give credits ofc. :smile.gif:
EDIT: It's sad that Gimp users aren't gonna be able to see the grouping. I put some time into that part lol.
yeah..most people wanting to make packs don't have the $600+ to drop on photoshop
edit: there was a mod floating around for a while that let you easily change out tiles in the terrain.png...I think it was built around this actually... may still be around

Oh, I didn't even know. Too bad, I suppose. Layer grouping sounds cool. Still, do what you can with mine.

I didn't pay $600 bucks for Photoshop. Just saying. of course, I'm not the only one.
In any case, the Layer grouping will be beneficial to the people who do have Photoshop and the ones who don't can still make use of the splitting. As for that program, I would love to see that. If I knew anything about C I would just make a simple program that renders the blocks and you can edit them with a real time preview, but alas, I don't.
