I want to start an ambitious Fallout themed texture pack... I'm pretty good at making skins but as an artist I decided I want to do a Hi-Def hand drawn look to it. Inspired by such packs as Bordercraft and Scribblecraft, I'm a natural artist and do independent graphic novels on my spare time and want to bring that to my Minecraft playing experience.
Is there a certain way I go about doing this? Do I just add my art concepts over the terrain.png, mob files, etc. like a normal re-skin? Or is there something I'm missing?
I just need someone to point me in the right direction and I'll take it from there. Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Yes you can do it over the terrain.png you just need to keep in mind sizes. For 16x retextures the normal terrain.png is fine but for 32x you need to double the size of the original making the terrain.png 512x pixels and to go on up you keep doubling the terrain.png with 64x retexture being a 1024x terrain.png if that makes sense.

Okay so if I double the size of the original texture images up to 1024x I can essentially start making a 64x texture... makes sense. Is there any more to it then that?

not really i just recommend that you use a program that has transparency such as paint.net which is free or Photoshop which is not free to make the graphics. i also recommend creating a new file in the editing program and making its size 64x then drawing on it and then copying it to its corresponding spot on the sized up terrain.png

Okay, I do use both of those... thanks for info, just needed some clarification so I can actually start this project already.
good luck if you have any questions pm me and i will answer them and if you need advice on whether the things look good you can pm me about that too
Actually yeah, that would be a good idea... I need all the outside help I can get. Adding you to my Friends list here and I'll send you a PM if anything comes up. Thanks again.
You might already know this, but a useful trick for getting textures to tile correctly is the cut-move-paste method. Basically, you cut a vertical or horizontal half of your texture, move the remaining piece over to where the other one was, and then paste the cut piece back in where the moved one was. Repeat as needed. It is extremely useful especially when working in high resolutions.
And also, if you screw up somewhere in copying and pasting, you can just undo until you have both halves again.

WOAH, WAIT. Our eyes take pictures? Please tell me I can recover these pictures from another person.
You have to stick a thumb drive up their nose, drag and drop the pictures onto it, and then load them through your ear.
