I think what it comes down to is ultimately the fact that the image can be altered at all. Yes, most people will alter the image to be another version of the Mojang logo, which is cool. But it can be altered to anything at all, with no way at all to police that.
To draw a parallel, comic scans will often have a final image after the comic itself with a splash page advertising the scanner. I have several times seen issues arise where people thought that splash page of a mostly-naked woman, or whatever, was part of the official comic. Downloading that comic in the first place was illegal, but there have still been letters sent to comic companies over the lewd images comic scanners include.
There is no quality control on texture packs. A person could slap their own logo on there instead of Mojang's, and the possibility that someone might install it and get upset over the image, and then bring that back to Mojang, rather than the texture artist exists. It's like that Cease and Desist letter they got over all the Miniature Golf mods and videos. The mod makers didn't get the letters. The people uploading to YouTube didn't get the letters. Mojang got the letters.
Not allowing that image to be changed is protecting their brand, but in the sense of brand recognition. It's CYOA.

This falls down for a couple of reasons.
For the most part, you can't control anything that anyone does. It's like putting a metal brace around the trunk of a tree to prevent someone from cutting a tree down, but they can still cut slightly higher or just cut all of the branches off. Someone with malicious intent has all of the rest of the assets to modify. People can slap their name on the main-menu logo, or even modify the language file to put it in random, odd places (not likely to fool anyone, but I guess if they can install a resource pack and not make the connection it isn't too hard). To even attempt to stop this you'd have to remove resource packs altogether.
Also, trickery doesn't really work here. You've had to start the game at least once to select a resource pack, meaning you'd have seen the splash screen. You've also already bought they game directly from Mojang, not only meaning that you should have seen their name by now, but also that you've given them money (so "xXx_sKaTeRkiD13509_xXx" or whoever putting their name on it doesn't really matter because you aren't going to try and buy it from them). Someone who can mistake what someone did in a resource pack they downloaded for Mojang's doing must be quite daft (much like the people writing letters in your example). Also, if you report it on Jira once they find out you're using a pack they'll tell you it's invalid (and tell you why).
So yeah, I think this is a non-issue here (or as said above, one that can't be solved) and all it does is hurt those who want to change it, and lower the value of resource packs for everyone. It does more harm than good. Most people who edit the Mojang logo do so while leaving the Mojang logo in-tact. If the removed the ability to change this because "someone might be able to try and be nefarious" that's ridiculous. That's about on-par with banning all fast-food in the US because obesity is a problem. I don't want my freedoms taken away because some people abuse it.
Also, the put-put thing was because of a copyright troll who fires lawsuits and does investigating later. Whoops, I'll probably get sued now.....
I'm not sure if Kahr intentionally made the logo load from resource packs or not, but I don't think he should change it back. MCpatcher is what people install if they want packs to look better, and the Mojang logo is something that could look better, too. Plus, MCpatcher is 3rd party, it makes it that much harder for someone to somehow get "tricked" by a resource pack. I still think the "oh, someone could use it to scam!" is a bunch of FUD. Yes, bad people do bad things, and they always find a way. Just like DRM, they find a way around it, and it hurts legitimate customers more than it stops people from doing something you don't want.

I'm not really worked up..... just..... explained above.
Has mojang actually commented on the reason for it? If it's due to a functionality issue of some kind, i doubt they'd mind if it's changed. If they simply want to make sure their logo is included in some fashion, thats's fair, and there are plenty of ways to add both. At the default size of the minecraft window when it's launched, at which time the loading screen is shown, there's empty space on either side of the loading texture. The logo could fit vertically into that space, or the loading screen texture could be moved to one side, with the mojang logo on the other.
It makes sense that some texture artists might be rather upset about this. It's always been customizable, and it's always been the first impression of a texture pack. Something to add to build a bit of suspense and anticipation. As a result, plent of texture artists have chosen to put a whole lot of effort into that texture. My own took me the better part of 3 days and is VERY detailed. Ideally i'd like to have it back as a loading screen where it belongs, but if that's not possible, i'll just repurpose it into a painting, no harm done.
But remember, this is just a snapshot, and as far as i've seen, there has been nothing mentioned by mojang about this change aside from the fact that it's working as intended, which doesn't say all that much. As snapshots go, things change, so you never know what's coming next. Mojang knows what they're doing. As does Kahr.
I'm sure that by time 1.8 is actually out that there will be a solution to this that satisifes everyone. Snapshots are always a bit... lumpy. Give it some time.
Hi guys I'm starting to be depressed from this issue, so i decide to ask cause i'm unable to find anything about it I just updated my server to 1.7.2 and it seems to broke all of my CTM's. - snip -
No it didn't, it's just that all of the textures on those two sides are flipped. This is a well-know, well-documented bug in 1.7.0. It has nothing to do with MCPatcher. Check the beds with a vanilla client if you don't believe me.
It was fixed by Mojang in 1.7.4, so you'll just have to grit your teeth and deal with it until your server updates again. Sorry.

Excuse my ignorance. This has probably been covered, but I wasn't able to find an answer. In past MCPatcher versions you were able to change the amount of RAM that minecraft could use. Am I blind or was this option removed a few versions ago? Ever since it was removed, minecraft is almost unplayable for me. Do I need to find another way to accomplish this(suggestions? ) or am I missing something?

Ahh...So it's not MCPatchers "fault" at all. Thanks for the info!. However, doing it sadly didn't solve my issue. I upped it from 1G to 4G and while it does show in game(F3) that more RAM is available, it still only USES the same amount of RAM as the 1G setting. Any ideas?
Ok, so i downloaded mcpatcher and when i open it it crashes almost instantly. Please help
Care to post a crash report? Details of your computer? Maybe a step-by-step description of what you did? Anything that would help us give an actual answer?

So, i had a really neat idea. I'd make birch leaves sort of transparent, layered over each other with the bottom most leaves showing through, and the entire texture being a bit transparent. It made sense to do this using a renderpass. Anyway, i tried it and it sort of works, but i need some help.
Look here:
This one is using a test texture of some blobs overlapping each other creating different opacities. The opacity works fine, but...
Look at the jungle trees in the background. Now, here it is without the new transparent birch texture:
Again, look at the jungle trees. In the second image, the jungle leaves are the correct texture, which use repeat ctm. In the image with the transparent birch leaves applied, the jungle leaves just use the base texture (i haven't got around to adding the new jungle leaves to the textures folder yet)
So basically, the transparent birch leaves are cancelling out my ctm on all other types of leaves. Also, it seems to have added the same renderpass layer to them, since the horizontal ctm overlay that uses renderpass 3 shows through them now.
Here's what's in the properties file:
birchleaves.propreties
Keeping this .properties file from interfering with the other leaf types, and i would also like to enable backface culling on the transparent leaves, since having them all showing through each other is a bit of a resouce hog, and creates a very unpleasent visual effect. If that's not possible, i could easily solve the issue by just increasing the opacity enough that it's opaque once it gets a few layers deep, but that's not ideal.
Also, does anyone know how to change the color overlay on melon/pumpkin stems?
...Also, does anyone know how to change the color overlay on melon/pumpkin stems?
Off the top of my head, I would have said the 'color.properties' file, but it doesn't seem to be the place at all, 'cos I checked quite a few other packs and none of those implement pumpkin stem color editing that way. Could it be edited, even if only slightly influenced, by making up a custom biome palette?

Also nice idea for the birch leaves up there.
Color.properties indicated that making stemcolor.png would fix it, unfortunately that had no effect at all when i tried it.
Something weird has been going on with MCPatcher recently. When I try to test Minecraft out, this happens:
The last thing it says is "Minecraft exited with status 1". What's status 1? And when I actually play Minecraft, nothing is patched and the sounds and textures are still the same as vanilla. This has never happened before in any previous version of MCPatcher. Why now? What is this supposed to mean?

But do you by chance know what's going on with my leaf transparency issue? I've looked over the wiki and found nothing relevant.
