Second, I'm having a problem installing Forge with the new MCPatcher. I've followed the instructions, using the Universal download and not the installer and such, but when I click the + button it refuses let me select .jar files at all. (It stays on .zip with no option to change)
When I manually enter the file name, it gives me an error and directs me to this big huge log file: http://pastebin.com/8NepSPf1
I'm reasonably certain I'm following the instructions correctly. Any idea what's going on?
I didn't see it in the update, but just to make sure I'm not mistaken, horses are still incompatible with Random Mobs, yes? I'm not pressuring or demanding it or anything, but I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss it if it did happen ^.^
Correct. Mojang's overlay system for horse textures doesn't play well with Random Mobs. I'm still considering alternatives.

You don't need to change the file type in the browse dialog. As long as the file is named minecraftforge-universal-*.jar it should show up. If it's not, something's wrong. Maybe make sure the extension is really .jar and not .jar.zip or anything.
- Font spacing / kerning is still far too wide compared to pre 1.6.x releases
And again, I cannot change this without breaking behavior that other texture packs are relying on. If you want a font to use MCPatcher's sizing algorithm, copy it to /assets/minecraft/mcpatcher/font.
After clicking the patch button and waiting for theprogress bar to fill up, MCPatcher says that Minecraft has been patched, but when I go into Minecraft, nothing has changed. No random mobs, no connected textures, it's just like nothing happened.
Check the output when the game starts up. You may need to set the launcher to "Keep the launcher open" first. You should see text like
MCPatcherUtils initialized:
Minecraft directory: ...
(assets, libraries, versions)
Game directory: ...
(resourcepacks, saves)
Minecraft version: 1.6.2
MCPatcher version: 4.2.0
Max heap memory: 910.3MB
Max direct memory: 910.3MB
Launcher profile: MCPatcher
If it's not there, you're somehow not running the patched version. If it is, then make sure you're using a texture pack that uses MCPatcher's features.
The result was the wool texture (colored by potion color) behind the vanilla bottle/splash.
OK, this didn't work for me... but it did help me figure out what I was doing wrong.
When I entered this exact code into the file it displayed the file I was trying to change the overlay to in place of the bottle texture, and the wool in place of the overlay. Sufficed to say, massive amounts of "WTF?" were had at this, since the file no longer referenced that image at all.
Turns out what happened was that the .properties file had the same name as the .png file, so it was automatically using that file regardless of what the actual text of the file itself contained. I'm not sure whether this is a bug or a feature, but if it's a feature it's a darned counter-intuitive one. I don't know if I would have EVER figured that out had you not poked me with your example.
But it's working now, so I do again thank you very much for helping me out!

I think my laptop is just haunted. It seems to be working today. Sorry for the false alarm.
Anyway, everything now appears to be working perfectly. Granted I haven't tested anything with the Forge interaction just yet, but hopefully that won't be much of an issue. Thank you again for fixing everything. You're the best Kahr!
Now all you need to do is get MCPatcher compatible with Optifine again!

Edit: One serious question, though. You said the Forge support was basic. Does this mean that animated mod textures haven't been implemented yet? I ask because I can't get them to work again, and I'm hoping that it's because it hasn't been finished rather than that I'm totally losing my mind and have forgotten how to do everything.
Edit Again: Ah HA! I forgot about the "namespace" method of referencing stuff. Apparently that works despite the fact that the long way doesn't. Weird. Anyway, it works so thank you for implementing that!

Um, I followed the tutorial on how to install forge to a 'T', but I can't figure out how to install mods for it that do not go into the jar. Do I go into .minecraft, can I not install mods like that, or do I need to do something else entirely.

You install Forge mods the same way you normally would: by putting them into the /mods/ folder.
As I explained earlier, this happens without MCPatcher. And again, I cannot change this without breaking behavior that other texture packs are relying on. If you want a font to use MCPatcher's sizing algorithm, copy it to /assets/minecraft/mcpatcher/font.
This is frustrating because in 1.4.6, for instance, the font for Zombe Fly Mod toggle ALWAYS showed up. Now it does not with MC Patcher, but does with Optifine B1, B2, B3. Isn't that fixable?
As for the main interface font, again in 1.4.6, MC Patcher rendered and kerned the fonts properly. In 1.6.2 it does not. But Optifine still does.
I've used MC Patcher from the start, but if you are simply not going to correct these issues, I'm not sure how I can continue to do so.
If you ever do decide to work those issues for a solution, I'll welcome that. But until then, at least Optifine is still doing it right, and I can use them instead.
Still, best wishes to you and thanks for all the work you have done in the past.
Could you add an option to create a library instead of actually patching the jar when you click patch? Also, I'm being asked to sign in every time I patch. It shouldn't create a new profile if one of the same name already exists.
I'm having an issue when the patcher loads, it's saying:
There was an error with your minecraft installation
Could not get list of minecraft versions
please re-run the game from the minecraft launcher. if the problem persists, try deleting both mcpatcher.json and launcher_profiles.json from appdata\roaming\.minecraft
and run launcher again.
I did exactly that multiple times, completely deleted and re-installed minecraft and still hasn't worked. am I missing something? can't find anything from google :\

Is there a way to make the armor models change when a player wears them if they are named something else via NBT tags? I tried this but it didn't work:
type=armor
texture.textures/models/armor/diamond_layer_1=bob1.png
matchItems=310
nbt.display.Name=Bob's Head
Turns out what happened was that the .properties file had the same name as the .png file, so it was automatically using that file regardless of what the actual text of the file itself contained.[/img]
Glad you figured it out. You're right that the default properties-to-png mapping should only happen when no textures are explicitly listed. I'll fix it in the next update.
Also, I'm being asked to sign in every time I patch. It shouldn't create a new profile if one of the same name already exists.
In the main menu under Profile there's a Select input profile option. Pick the profile you want to use as a template and then patch again. Normally, MCPatcher would use your first unmodded profile as input, but for various reasons that doesn't always work.
Also I should point out that only changes on the main Mods tab require repatching. That is, enabling, disabling, adding, removing, or reordering mods. Anything under the Options tab can be changed without patching again.
I'm having an issue when the patcher loads, it's saying:

Are you using a proxy server by any chance? Proxy support isn't implemented yet but I'm working on it.
In the meantime, try downloading this file manually and saving it inside .minecraft/versions. Once the file is in place, MCPatcher should work without any internet access. Also if you want, uncheck "Fetch list of Minecraft versions on startup" in the Options tab to prevent it from trying to download it each time.
I might be the only one having this issue, and it's kinda minor but warrants bringing up anyway, but for some reason with 4.2.0 the Better Grass setting doesn't work anymore. It is ticked in the patcher and CTM is active too, but it doesn't seem to apply at all.
I never had this problem before but I clicked run mcpatcher and it just keeps saying "Getting version list from s3.amazonaws.com.." And it wont do crap. I literally cant do anything and click on anything while its doing this. And it wont get the damn list.
I also got this error message.

Um,does anyone know how to MAtmos & Presence footsteps to work with MCPatcher? I installed the correct version of Forge, I patched the .jar, & I extracted the MAtmos & Footstep files to the mods folder. Yet it still doesn't work. It's hard to play without MAtmos.
Nope. Still doesn't work. This is strange, cause everything else works, but when I try to make use CIT for bow the whole CIT gets bugged
Would you mind sending your pack to me? It'll be easier for me to take a look at it if I actually have the whole thing in hand (so to speak). If you don't want it to be public, you can send it to me via PM. I can usually diagnose these issues once I can tinker with it a bit.
Also, make sure you're using the LATEST version of MCPatcher. There have been a lot of bugs in regards to CIT, but I think they're all fixed in the current version. Thanks.
idk if this bug pertains to MCPatcher, but I was playing MC the earlier today with no problems at all...then I go off to check my e-mail and watch a few youtube videos. When I got back on...MC kept crashing saying something about an invalid session ID. Nothing changed in MC since i got off last, so I have no idea what caused the invalid session ID, so I was hoping someone here would know...
The only mods I use beyond what comes with MCPatcher is Modloader and ControlPack.

Sorry Alvoria for not being here & helping, I been having Internet Problems & are still trying to fix them. So I haven't been able to post on here & help you guys out with all the MCPatcher problems people are having.

I don't think it's MCPatcher that's causing this but if you post the crash report we might be able to help you out.
I've never run into the error myself, but I did fix some threading issues that could potentially cause errors like it.
Correct. Mojang's overlay system for horse textures doesn't play well with Random Mobs. I'm still considering alternatives.

This is bad advice. Forge installation requires custom code that will be skipped if you do this.

It just means I haven't tested a lot of forge mods, but the ones I have seem to be working ok.
Still working on that one.
What would the advantage of that be?

All of the links go to the same set of files on bitbucket. The full MCPatcher source is there as well if you'd like to examine it.
I also got this error message.
I already deleted the minecraft folder over and over again. That solution doesnt work at all. Just trust me on that.
I tried that also, it didn't work, the texture was the same as my default diamond armor texture
