Every time i put my texture packs in my folder i would then patch it and log in but when i do it ends up giving me a black screen what do i do to fix it? thanks
I am getting a conflict with Buildcraft oil. Anyone know of any work arounds?

I see you used my concept for multiple pass texturing.
It's not, as you imply, just about the natural textures, it will practically address all your requests as well (Besides the full texture maps for doors etc.). It will allow you to stack textures together in different render passes and methods.
There could be methods for biome type, heights, face directions and light levels to apply different textures in these different conditions. Think of it as applying moss on stone in jungle biomes, making dirt darker in at low height levels etc.
All by just applying extra textures to a base one by passing multiple textures..
I think that adding multiple layers would have a huge negative impact on performance. even more so for packs like mine that are quite large. I love the idea, but it seems like it would be unreasonable given the current abilities of minecraft to render it efficiently. (ctm+/-betterglass is a great example... it slows the game down)
however... I do have a couple of good ideas for the possibilities of it, if it could work exactly as you guys suggest. (bumpmapping without glsl shaders anyone?)
edit: @Kahr: it seems the patcher doesn't play well with millenaire. throws a lot of errors loading textures for the mod.
@odisos01: If you look at the history of this mod, Kahr has spoken very little, but added functionality or is working on adding it for most of the community suggested features that are relevant and/or possible. I would much rather Kahr spend his time working on the patcher than answering everyone's posts. Give the man a break, he has a job and a life outside of minecraft modding and we should be thankful he has been developing this project for so long.
edit: @Kahr: it seems I am just going to have to hope for mc to have better multi core support if I want better performance. manually updating lwgl and java helped a bit, but my framerates are cut in half with mipmapping enabled. and the lag spikes are much more frequent than normal.
edit:another one. major graphical glitch, parts of underground that are visible during chunk loading are rendering anywhere you look until the chunk is loaded. not physical blocks, you just clip through them.
You can try forcing an update by going to options on the log-in screen right when you start up minecraft when the options box pops up just hit force update and it will notify you that it "will force!" then hit "done" then log in as usual and it will force update for you. If that dosent work you can try deleting the whole bin folder in your minecraft directory (the client will redownload it automatically), be sure to back up important files be for you do this (i.e. playerdata, saves, texture packs) just as a pre-caution so u don't lose anything important. If those things dont work im not sure what to do, Hope I helped
No, that didn't work either. I forced the update, was able to add Too Many Items through the patcher, and I didn't get any errors when I patched... but when I tried to run Minecraft, I got the black screen. Well, sometimes it was a black screen, sometimes it was a "Done Loading" screen or "Determining Packages to Load" screen. Either way, it wouldn't play.
yeah, I saw it in there! I was meaning I had some ideas of how to implement the layers for it to work...lol (and mentioning it again for people who don't recognize it by that name)
and unfortunately, the size of the pack does matter.... I have to have 2gig of ram allocated just to start minecraft without running out of memory while pre-loading my texturepack. (I allocate 4gig) that's where my main gripe about initial load times comes from. maybe add a loading bar like forge uses maybe? (I know, it doesn't really help, but it does....ya know?)
The new mipmapping feature is horrible. Tested it with my 256x256 WIP pack and default settings:
... EDIT: Thx for adding the possibility for custom compass needles. Question: Is there any way to change the colors of firework particles yet ? Default colors make a bit too pale appearance ...
I'll add support for custom mipmaps, which should address a lot of these complaints. As for the loading times, I'll work on it, but I can't make any promises.
Custom fireworks are on the TODO list, but it's not just the colors; the blending method also needs to be fixed. Multiply/replace doesn't make sense for something that's supposed to be giving off light. Mojang, hire an artist already!
Using the MCpatcher I get this issue with Lava and water that you can see in the picture. Lava has this pinkish hue that goes away when you get close to it and water has the same kind of effect where it is greenish from a distance and blue up close.
I've seen several reports like this, but can't reproduce it with any texture pack. It looks like a signed/unsigned bitshift problem since it's the red channel that gets distorted in the RGBA. Can you confirm that it goes away when mipmapping is disabled in the patcher Options tab?
I like the idea, but I think it will have to wait until 1.5. If it's true that each tile is going to be moved to its own texture, it will make features like this much easier to implement. Any effort I put into it until then would likely have to be thrown away.
It seems that the mipmap functionality doesn't like ladders very much, if you look up a long enough ladder it actually looks worse than it would without the mipmapping.
Yes, ladders and rails are two pathological cases that are unfriendly to mipmapping. Decreasing the LOD bias in the options should at least push the problem further out while I work on a solution.
The excessive loading times really need to be fixed (my Minecraft loads from a fast SSD, I've 4 GB of RAM allocated to Java and I'm playing with 3,4GHz Quadcore CPU and 1,25 GB of GPU, with all this nice hardware it's way too slow), ...
... it takes about 1,5 min to load a world with a 256x256 texturepack and MCPatcher's mipmapping enabled, about 25 seconds with Mipmapping disabled and using NIVIDA settings instead and about 3 seconds to load a world with an unpatched minecraft.jar). Just to compare. Needs.to.be.fixed.
And about the firework stuff: Can't wait to see the results
And yes, Mojang really needs an artist for Minecraft. The irony of the story: There're at least 3 artists working on Scrolls (anyone ever played Scrolls? I think not. Anyone had one day without playing Minecraft? I think not), there's even an artist working on 0x10c ... that's crazy ... crazy Mojangstas with no sense of priorities
this is why I said there is no help for me until minecraft handles multicore processing. it only runs one core. (optifine splits chunk loading across 2, but that's all... startup is still the same)
@2nv2u: my pack will not load at all without a minimum of 2gigs allocated. (there are a couple other 256x packs that do this as well) it really does depend on the overall size of the pack. I'm sure there are some things I could do to resolve some of it by taking steps to reduce the file sizes.... color indexing, cleaning up the extra alpha data, etc. but it doesn't make a huge difference.
really the problem is with minecraft itself. it needs a lot of optimizing, and hopefully the work they are doing towards expanding the texture limit and the way the files are handled will address some of the issues. for whatever reason, initial loading and all texture loading seem to be ram dependent, but chunk loading, etc. is not. once the pack is loaded and the world starts to load, ram usage never goes above 650mb of the 4gigs I run it with... but uses almost a full 2gigs to load... makes no sense to me.
I've seen several reports like this, but can't reproduce it with any texture pack. It looks like a signed/unsigned bitshift problem since it's the red channel that gets distorted in the RGBA. Can you confirm that it goes away when mipmapping is disabled in the patcher Options tab?
I just checked and it does indeed go away if I disable mipmapping.
I got the same issue on both my stationary and laptop regardless of which texture packs I use, if that is any help. Same issue if I just use the default textures. It does not happen as long as HD Textures is ticked off though which means that installation of texture packs that do not require HD textures still works fine.
I have another question about the custom animations, and this time I actually checked to make sure it wasn't in the Information For Texture Pack Authors window. Is it possible to set the duration of a certain tile as "random" (or some similar tag) and have it wait a randomized amount of time before moving onto the next tile?
Suddenly cannot get MCPatcher to give anything beyond a black screen on the mac. Even with a fresh download and install of minecraft, and a fresh download of MCPatcher. This is with absolutely no mods.
If I uncheck the better sky option before patching, it starts the game, but animated textures like fire and torches have really strange artifacts, both with vanilla textures as well as other texture packs.
Something is pretty fubar with the mac version of the patcher.
First I've heard of this. I'll switch to direct mediafire links as the adf.ly alternative for now. I know it's convenient to have a direct download link for scripts and packaging and such, so I'll look for something better.
it is of course about the famous buildcraft oil problem.
if i want to use an hd texturepack i'm stuck with optifine which is an pain in the ass. i want to use the patcher you know.
What is the "famous buildcraft oil problem" exactly?
because I wouldn't feel right complaining without doing some testing...
I decided to run a load time test with my texture pack, starting a stopwatch when I click login, and stopping it when the menu appears. I took 5 results in each test and averaged them.
Just noticed white pixellation around certain objects, namely CTM panes and portal particles when viewed through the purple portal, within the field of view. Don't know if this has anything to do with mipmapping, connected textures or stray transparent pixels?

I like the idea, but I think it will have to wait until 1.5. If it's true that each tile is going to be moved to its own texture, it will make features like this much easier to implement. Any effort I put into it until then would likely have to be thrown away.
Yes, ladders and rails are two pathological cases that are unfriendly to mipmapping. Decreasing the LOD bias in the options should at least push the problem further out while I work on a solution.

Curse Premiumthis is why I said there is no help for me until minecraft handles multicore processing. it only runs one core. (optifine splits chunk loading across 2, but that's all... startup is still the same)

Curse Premiumstep 1: tell Norton to allow it. it is safe.

Curse Premiumreally the problem is with minecraft itself. it needs a lot of optimizing, and hopefully the work they are doing towards expanding the texture limit and the way the files are handled will address some of the issues. for whatever reason, initial loading and all texture loading seem to be ram dependent, but chunk loading, etc. is not. once the pack is loaded and the world starts to load, ram usage never goes above 650mb of the 4gigs I run it with... but uses almost a full 2gigs to load... makes no sense to me.

Curse Premiumtried to take screen shots, but they didn't save...had an entire abandoned mine floating in front of me for about 5 min...lol
Also check me out on:
WordPress, Etsy, and Spore.
If I uncheck the better sky option before patching, it starts the game, but animated textures like fire and torches have really strange artifacts, both with vanilla textures as well as other texture packs.
Something is pretty fubar with the mac version of the patcher.
Like this? Only happens after I patch with mcpatcher:
Torches look like ass from a distance as well, with white outlines around distant ones:
Fixed!
First I've heard of this. I'll switch to direct mediafire links as the adf.ly alternative for now. I know it's convenient to have a direct download link for scripts and packaging and such, so I'll look for something better.
What is the "famous buildcraft oil problem" exactly?
The "redshift" bug (yellow portals, pink lava, etc.) is fixed. It only happens with the default animations, which is why I missed it before.
Hm, I haven't seen this. Is your torch texture animated?
