Optifine doen't have custom xp orb colours or extended animations support (e.g. animated mobs etc.) ...yet! Besides, you can use MCPatcher AND Optifine together (the best of both worlds) if you know what you're doing!
How would I apply ConnectedTextures to all four types of planks? That is, what would the folder/filenames be?
Create a properties file 'terrain<insert terrain index id here>.properties'. The terrain ids should belong to the position of the planks in the terrain png. Place the properties file in the 'ctm' folder where the corresponding ctm plank pngs are located. For more help, see this.

MCPatcher is not a security risk. If it triggers your Antivirus, it is simply a false positive. It contains no malware. If it did, it would have been removed from the forums a long time ago.

So, I get that it's not a security risk, but there's a single test coming back with Trojan/Win32.Ruftar.gen on VirusTotal. Unfortunately, this means that I can't submit an Insight Dispute to Norton with any real chance it'll stick, which is the main AV suite giving users trouble over this. Well I've looked around, searched the file, and scanned my registry (manually) and looked through some files, according to what my google search returned. It would appear my computer is clear. Now after installing and patching MCPatcher(using the .exe), it again seems my computer is clear.
Places I checked:
%appdata%
In the registry:
HKey_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
Updated to release 2.3.7_02. Should work with the latest minecraft forge again. See OP for links.
Also there is a small new feature to make life easier for texture pack authors. Mojang drastically changed the Creative Mode UI in one of the snapshots but didn't change the filename, ensuring that every texture pack will look messed up in one version or the other.
As a workaround until 1.3 is official, MCPatcher will look for the file /gui/allitemsx.png in older versions of the game (specifically, pre-12w22a) and use that for the Creative GUI if it is found. If allitemsx.png is not present, the game will simply use allitems.png just as it does now. Newer versions will always use /gui/allitems.png. So make allitems.png the new format and allitemsx.png the old format, and the texture pack will work with both 1.2.5 and the snapshot.

How about allitems[versionnumber].png?

Infact, it would be awesome if you could work this in across the board for all .pngs! While it would not have many uses yet, it could be used to add further backwards compatibility in texturepacks!
For example, back when chests were a block in the terrain.png. Their textures have been removed now, and the Emerald block is taking up one of those spots. So if anyone uses a texture pack with the emerald block textured. and their version is that of when chests were a full block, they would see the emerald block on one of the sides.
But if you implement this, you could have a "terrain1.7.3beta.png", and people with those versions could have accurate textures!
Or if they do further changes like they did to the allitems.png, in the future.
EDIT: Another example, is in Beta 1.7, they changed the bed and cake textures to be on the bottom half of the 16x square, rather than the top half as they were before. If you use a 1.2.5 texture pack on a version before Beta 1.7, beds and cake will be invisible. Putting a "terrain1.6.6beta.png" with the bed and cake textures on the top half of the block, with this addition, would solve that problem.
We need a 'Random items' Texture feature. It would let you have multiple textures for each item. Why? Because not every stick is the same, not every sword is the same, and etc.

but what about items that stack? it would be weird if you had two sticks with different textures, then you tried to combine their stacks.

ok I have tried using this to install forge since its worked with all my other add ons. However it won't work. I think its just moving the .jar files into the minecraft.jar not the folders. Can anyone help me fix that?
I was running minecraft perfectly fine until I tried to install Ovo's Rustic v1.9 Texture Pack. The Texture pack itself worked great with no issues other than certain blocks being non existant because i needed to run the McPatcher. I went ahead and ran the McPatcher and ever since my minecraft will randomly crash after anywhere from 5 to 1hr of playing saying that my "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" but my minecraft goes black and I am forced to restart minecraft. I am very aware that many people expierence this problem without running the McPatcher but I can only think that this is the cause of my crash because I was running minecraft perfectly before this.
Steps I have taken:
- I deleted my .minecraft folder and installed new - no luck
- Changed all settings to various combinations in game- at the lowest video settings minecraft seems to last a little longer before crashing but after one crash the interval between each crash decreases.
Computer Specs:
- Windows 7 64 Bit
- Radeon HD 6770M
- 8.00 GB RAM
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I tried running with out a texture pack and the crash still occurs!

Could you add support for saving MC credentials like Sk's launcher? I love being able to set memory but it has to be launched from here and I play on servers mainly so it's sort of useless.

That means you did not successfully patch for HDTextures.
