Are you, by any chance, trying to run it through your browser? Or are you on Windows 32-bit?
Im playing on my desktop launcher. And i found out what the problem was. In fact it was my error, i download JRE7 (Which i thought was the newest) but when i checked out a few videos i ended up by downloading JRE6 update 27 and evrything turned out O.K... :S I feel like a newb now >.<
I deleted minecraft-1.3_01.jar and everything seemed to work fine. Then I deleted minecraft.jar and everything was greyed out like you said, but unlike you I couldn't use the Browse buttons either. That's definitely a bug, and I can fix it, but it's not the same thing you're seeing. What are you doing differently?
I have a suspicion why HD Textures are greyed out if GLSL is loaded, and I'll try to narrow it down and put out a fix later. As for your question, that depends more on GLSL I think. I've only glanced at the source for GLSL shaders so I don't really understand it well enough to tell if it gets files from the texture pack or only minecraft.jar.
Are you saying the game crashes just from opening the Mods and Texture Packs screen, without even clicking on any texture packs? That's very odd. What files do you have in your texturepacks folder? Take everything out of that folder and then move them back in one by one to see if there's one in particular it doesn't like.
Hey, after I downloaded this, instead of there just being a minecraft.jar file in the bin folder, there was also a file named minecraft-1.8.1.jar. What is this file, and did MCPatcher install it, or am I just being retarded? Also, what would happen if I delete this file?
Although I would think installing a texture pack as a mod should work too? It would just replace the default textures.
you would think.. but that's all I saw out of place in the log... but I'm not experienced enough with them to be sure. (if you haven't noticed by now....I guess a lot...lol)
some reason when i open the patcher it gives me this.
There was an error opening minecraft.jar. This may be because:
You selected the launcher jar and not the main minecraft.jar in the bin folder.
You selected a texture pack and not minecraft.jar
The file has already been patched. (It hasnt)
There was an update that this patcher cannot handle. (Im using patcher 2.1.1_01 on 1.9 pre)
There is another, conflicting mod applied. (I have no other mods applied. This is fresh.)
The jar file is invaild or corrupt (Minecraft runs correctly in 1.9 pre)
This is the log.

I agree with that being the only problem I noticed in the log, but it doesn't really make a lot of sense.
Sorry to bug, but can someone answer the question I posted last page?:
After I downloaded this, instead of there just being a minecraft.jar file in the bin folder, there was also a file named minecraft-1.8.1.jar. What is this file, and did MCPatcher install it, or am I just being stupid? Also, what would happen if I delete this file?
at the first post it says the grey grass sides with modloader are fixed. but it wont work. i still get grey grass. with patching and than applying modloader.
@Xentonic: move the patcher to your c:// directory. try again. the & in your computer username is the problem...the patcher can't handle the special characters.

it looks like you tried to install a texture pack as a mod.. repatch without adding dokucraft as a mod...just put packs into the texturepack folder.
Although I would think installing a texture pack as a mod should work too? It would just replace the default textures.

Run as administrator.
And why the double post?
You ask for help, and then the same minute you bump your request?
Impatient or typo?

You need to install modloader before patching.
Your Windows username has a space in it.
Then rename it to .jar...
