I updated to 1.8 and downloaded the new MCPatcher. I had a fresh minecraft.jar, but it won't let me do HD Textures, and when I patch with just ModLoader, Minecraft black screens.
Do I need to download the most recent modloader? And how do I fix the greyed out HD Textures?
Using mcpatcher to install modloader and better grass makes the grass grey?
Will an update /patch be released?
Yep, ModLoader changes qo.class just enough to prevent one of the needed patches from working. I should be able to come up with a fix, but in the meantime disable Better Grass.
Followed the instructions but every time I patch it downgrades 1.8 to 1.8 prerelease. Whats up?
The blue text in the OP tells you exactly what to do. Delete minecraft-1.8.jar from .minecraft/bin, force update the game using the launcher, then re-patch.

Did this thrice, every time it went back to prerelease. I don't think doing it a 4th time will help.

Hm, I don't know where else it could be getting it from then. What OS are you using? Try searching your computer for minecraft*.jar and seeing if any other files pop up.
Some people get the following error:
Patching...

I do not know what causes this bug. It affects some people but not others. As a workaround, try this
Download the jar version (not the exe)
Use WinZip, 7-zip, etc., to unpack the jar into its own folder, say mcpatcher-2.1.1.
In the folder, right-click and create new text file called mcpatcher.bat. Make sure you have file extensions turned on so you are creating mcpatcher.bat and not mcpatcher.bat.txt.
Edit the file in notepad and copy the following into it:
@echo off
java com.pclewis.mcpatcher.MCPatcher
pause
Save the file and exit.
The mcpatcher-2.1.1 folder should look like this:
com
javassist
META-INF
resources
mcpatcher.bat
Double-click mcpatcher.bat. The patcher window should appear.

Offhand, I'd say one of foliagecolor.png, grasscolor.png, or watercolor.png are the wrong size. They must be 256x256. If that's not it, send me a link to your texture pack and I'll try to figure it out.

I'm not a Mac user, so I don't know the details, but the same basic idea should work. Extract mcpatcher-2.1.1.jar to a folder and open a Terminal window. In that window cd into the directory you extracted it to and run the command

I am having trouble with this HD Patcher. I've used it before, and I need it for the current texture pack that I have. However, after I update my minecraft to 1.8, and then I use the HD Patcher, it resets my Minecraft back to 1.7 and cancels out what mods I have installed. I have done trial and errors, and this seems to be the problem. I am not sure what to do at this point. If you would like to see what I am doing, I can record it and show you. I look forward to a response! Thanks!
As you can see, I'm relatively new to the forums, and to Minecraft. (buddy introduced me about two weeks ago and I've already chalked up WAY more time on this game than I expected)
So, just wanted to mention/ask about this patcher. I updated the patcher just like you said, and worked beautifully. (no more invisible water or floating fire in the dirt/stone/grass) However, the "new" items such as raw/cooked chicken or steak and etc are still invisible.
I'm assuming this will be fixed with future texture packs/HD patcher updates?

That is not a patcher issue, it is your texture pack. You need to download the latest version of it.

My guess is you have an incompatible mod loaded somehow. Remove all mods from the list except HD textures/fonts and Better Grass, delete minecraft-1.8.1.jar, force update the game, and repatch.
Not sure if anybody said this already, but MCP 2.1.1 works with patching 1.8.1.
Good to know, thanks. As a happy side effect, this clears up the 1.8 preview vs. final minecraft.jar confusion once and for all. I wonder what the "final" 1.8 version number will eventually be.
well its good to I haven't had any problems and most of the other problems are being resolved I can inly image all the new texture packs and mods that will come out now with 1.8

ModLoader and MCPatcher's "Better Grass" have been incompatible for a very long time. Just don't use the Better Grass mod, that's the best solution.
How does MCPatcher get modloader?

This one seems to work with 1.8 final, but I'll keep an eye out for bug reports and put out an update if needed.

No other .jars found
edit: lol i just deleted all the minecraft.jars before 1.8 as well and it seemed to work, idk why just not deleting 1.8 didnt work. /shrug
Oh well I'm good now
