I think being able to use texture packs is one of Minecrafts most attractive qualities. To be able to completely change the look of everything in a cool new way? Awesome! And also the handy dandy texture pack selector! Which happens to only work with 16x16 texture packs. Personally, I think there is a reason for this. Not a reason like, its simply not compatible without an HD patcher. A reason by the mighty creator Notch :iapprove:. Texture packs over 16x16, for the most part, take away from Minecraft's feel. I personally never use anything above 16x16 but I have seen several 32x32 texture packs that I liked. I think Minecraft was made to use 16x16 texture packs, which shows it in its true and full glory. Thoughts?
exactly my thinking. But, i think it's different for some people, some people like that realism and stuff, to each his own i think. I'll be honest, i enjoy a lot of 32x32 more than 16x16s. However I find that the 32x32s i like, are modeled after a 16 bit or 32 bit video game (legend of zelda, etc.) I just love being able to relive thos memories in a totally different game.
The true and full glory of MC is the ability to do what you can do with it and while playing it. Has nothing to do with the resolution. The fact that there are so many tex packs and mods for the game speaks to this. Notch himself loves the higher resolution packs, just doesn't feel the need to support them fully.

I disagree. I use Misa's 64x texture pack. With it, Minecraft looks more... lifelike and immersive. Consequently, I feel more involved in the game and I take greater pride in the beauty of the world and the things I create.
Minecraft doesn't lose any of it's charm just because it doesn't look like some 8-bit game from 1990 anymore.

"Don't know why you should feel that there's something to learn... it's just a game that you play."
I'm conflicted with high-res texture packs. Higher-res packs typically seem to be focused on detail (obviously); detail doesn't work to well when you have a texture repeating over a larger surface. It tends to look very unnatural, whereas simpler textures flow.
Try using a high res pack, look at the grass in the distance. I'm doubtful it's going to look very good.
idk about you guys, but some of the 32x ones are way better than 16x. The only time it looks weird is with fire and water, but overall its more fun. IMO
There is nothing wrong with only liking 16x16, but you have to understand it is a sentimental, idealogical viewpoint to say it 'fits' Minecraft better than other resolutions. As Gestankfaust has said, Minecraft's strength and popularity lies in the fact that you can make with it, and make of it, what you will. It is the ultimate sandbox game for everyone...and everyone is different.
I personally think 32x32 is just about right for me, a happy compromise between 'lack' of detail and 'too much' detail for a blocky world, but that doesn't mean it's right for you.
As has been said before...everything is a matter of taste, no right or wrong, just choice, but if something is going to last and be appreciated, like Aageon says, it must be made well and must add something new to Minecraft.
One of Minecraft's greatest strengths, and Notch's best decision about his creation, was to make it open and editable...it keeps it fresh and constantly evolving and inspires it's users to new heights of creativity.
