hey guys, dr higgle tiggle here and after alot of browsing through this section i have found quite alot of threads on how to make a texture pack, so I decided to make a guide on them.Lets get started shall we?
~~~~FINDING THE FILES~~~~
First off we need the files so we can edit them as we please, to find these files you will need a program like winrar.
Note: These instructions are for windows only atm, this is because i dont have a mac.
Click start, and type %appdata% in the search bar.Press enter, now you are in the appdata folder, now go into Roaming and open the .minecraft folder.
Open the bin folder and RIGHT click on minecraft.jar and press open with and choose Winrar. Look for the following files: armor, art, gui, item, misc, mob, terrain. and the following images: particles.png and terrain.png, once you have found those copy and paste them to a folder, preferably on your desktop.
If you are too lazy to follow these instructions, here is a download of them: http://painterlypack.net/customizer.php Note: this is a link for the painterly pack, this is because i have modded my minecraft.jar with things like baby animals etc. Just download a default painterly pack and start editing.(Reason for painterly: well known pack, easy to spot if someones taking credit for others work)
~~~~EDITING~~~~
Now you are ready to edit, BUT you will need a image editor that supports transparency, microsoft paint wont do, some good free ones are Gimp and Paint.net, a quick google search will get you a download in no time. if you have the money and want to make high res packs a good one is photoshop. The first file you will want to edit is the terrain.png , it has all the blocks currently in the game on it, therefore the most important.
Now that the terrain.png is open edit away, when done save it back in that folder that I mentioned earlier ( the one with all your work in it. ) If you want to make a pack with a higher resolution than default you must double the image size, I only know how to do this on paint.net and it is realy simple, just go onto the image tab and click resize, make sure maintain aspect ratio is ticked and double the size. If your no good at math here are the image sizes with there respecting pack resolution:
16X: 256x256
32X: 512X512
64X: 1024X1024
128X: 2048X2048
256X: 4096X4096
The higher the resolution the more intensive it will be on your game, 256 packs should only be used if your computer can handle it, otherwise your gameplay will lag terribly.
~~~~PACKAGING~~~~
Now that you have edit your pack as much as you want select all files and RIGHT click, click send to and choose compressed zip folder, now run minecraft and go to modding and texture packs and press open texture packs folder. and place the zip folder you just created in here. Then select it with the ingame texture selector and have fun using it.If you want others to use it you will need to put the zip folder on a file hosting website such as mediafire or filefront.
Well thats all there is to texture creating, hope you have learnt as much as possible from this guide.
