I've seen a lot of abuse to those that post simple 16x16 texture packs on this forum, and to be honest, it's a joke how many of you are annoyed by them. So I really hope you read this entire post and never speak out against them ever again.
1) Simple packs, believe it or not, are not all exactly the same. THEY'RE DIFFERENT! They're also simple, so there aren't big jumping in your face changes, no. They are SUBTLE. Thus being the point of the theme. So next time, instead of reading the word simple and instantly hating, use the texture pack for all off three minutes and you'll notice TONS of things that make that texture pack unique.
2) None of the top-quality texture pack makers you know and love are stopping production of their extravagant textures to make simple ones. Stop being so over dramatic. "I swear I've seen 5 new simple texture packs this week." Oh, did you now? You should count the number of new not-simple texture packs this week. Oh, what's that? Too many to count? Thought so.
3) Make a texture pack yourself. Most, very close to all, of the simplicity haters I've seen have never made a texture pack themselves, and yet, they find it completely appropriate to say "I can't find a good 16x16 texture pack." Make one. Nobody knows what you want in a texture pack but you. By the time you make three blocks, I guarantee you a simple texture pack is exactly what you'll want to make.
4) Simplicity doesn't mean noobiness or laziness, it means Minecraft is noisy, active, and the texture pack creator wants to calm it down. Not much more to say, it's not a get-out-of-trying alternative. These simple texture pack creators are proud of the work they've done, and I guarantee you they got the exact result they wanted when they started on their texture packs.
5) Some people actually PREFER a simple Minecraft! (Shocking, I know!) I do, thousand of others do. Just because you want Minecraft to looks as realistic as possible, doesn't mean everybody does. Just remember, there's a difference between a bad texture pack and a texture pack you don't like.
6) "Simplicity is the ultimate form or sophistication." -Leonardo da Vinci Guys, as much as you may want to hate, making something simple is TONS harder than making it complicated. ANYBODY can throw colors on a canvas that clearly represent the object that it is aimed at representing. But simplicity, that's hard. You're limited in what you can add. Too little and it won't represent the object you want it to, so much and it won't be simple anymore. Simple texture packs have to be just perfect in order to be just that: simple.
If I changed your mind, good, I'm glad. I have the utmost respect for the creators of simple texture packs. If I didn't, though, at least (PLEASE) don't spam the threads with pointlessness about how they should not have posted it or it's 'exactly like another texture pack.' They aren't going to delete their post because of you and it certainly isn't exactly like another pack.
If you made it to this point, thank you for the time out of your day. :smile.gif:
Still think they're all the same? Check these things against another to see if they really are exactly the same.

Important things to notice about "simple" texture packs:
[*:c75okg1x]They may or may not use borders on blocks to create a "Grid" effect.
[*:c75okg1x]They may use different color palettes. Some may have muted, "realistic" colors, other may have bold colors, some may have themed colors.
[*:c75okg1x]Some packs may use simple solid colors for nearly everything, while others will have simple patterns on things such as sand or grass.
[*:c75okg1x]Look at the tree leaves and the ores. Different "simple" texture packs will draw them very differently.
[*:c75okg1x]Some packs (such as the High Visibility pack) have very specific goals in mind to make things easier for the player.
[*:c75okg1x]Wools are very important now that all of those colors are available - some packs have chosen to make them into patterns instead of simple color changes.
[*:c75okg1x]Some packs will redo animals, paintings, and other objects outside the normal terrain textures, and others won't.
Huh, I'm having major Deja Vu, reading this thread..
But anyways, all excellent points. Simple packs aren't my personal cup of tea (I love ornate things. And noise. I love noise.), but I don't go around flaming their creators. Some of them are actually pretty charming. Sometimes I might give them a polite bump if I think someone will fancy them, but otherwise, it's best to just leave them be. People who do like them will come along and show interest and contribute. Bringing bad blood into the mix certainly doesn't help anyone.
Good post. Hopefully we'll see less hostility around these parts. :smile.gif:
I agree with this so much. BillyCraft is a simple pack because I LIKE SIMPLE PACKS, and it is customized to look just how I want it. There are plenty of differences between different simple packs (many have custom textures for more man-made objects that, while simple, are certainly unique, or in my case I just deleted all the noise on the default textures), and to hate on them is like me going into every unthemed texture pack and saying how they all look generic and similar to me (and they do! But I don't have the gall to go and post about it because I know that I'd hate it if someone did it to me).
I agree with this for the most part, BUT I wish some people would make their simple packs stand out from the pack a bit more...
Some of them look like the only things that were changed from another simple pack were the ores...
Your "most people who criticize simple packs never made one" argument is ********. When you don't like a movie, what do you do? You tell what you think or you keep it to yourself since you never made a movie in your like?
Actually, I am inclined to agree with ytsejam. Just because you can't do it yourself doesn't mean you can't critique someone for doing it poorly. However, just about every other point the OP made is valid and correct.

Maybe I came across incorrectly the first time around. What I meant was, "People dislike the texture pack, and sometimes the forum as a result, because the texture pack(s) being produced are not what they want in a texture pack. This should not be the case, if you want the perfect texture pack, make the perfect texture pack... [continue one other points from here]."

Yeah, I am in no way saying that every simple pack is great. Many suck. I just believe all packs should have an honest judgement, of which is totally unbiased at the fact that they are packs aimed at simplicity.
Thanks for this. People going on about simple packs irritates me :/ And I'm sure that for a decent portion of people making simple packs(me included) it's their first pack so they want to start somewhere, well, simple.

Thats completely true. My first pack was a simple pack of sorts, I just didn't release it. Or the one after that... :tongue.gif:
Personally, I'm a great fan of simple texture packs, and they are in fact different from one another. Hopefully this thread will help to open up the eyes of others.
Agree with the OP, totally agree. People who complain about simple texture packs being "the same" simply aren't paying attention to the details. When it comes to simple art, details matter! They're not the same pixel by pixel.

So no, simple packs are not the same. They really aren't. Yet almost every "simple pack" thread I've read has at least one person who will whine about it and link to the other packs as "proof" of their misguided idea that they are identical.
But I have YET to see any that are exactly the same pixel by pixel and color by color.

Thanks for that, I've been thinking about listing the differences people should check for, but I decided to just say people should look over everything. Rarely will anything be even remotely similar to each other. Anyway, I quoted you in the OP. Thanks again. :smile.gif:

I love the colors red, and black.
So, what do I do?
I make it into a simple texture pack of red and black.
I know some people would probably think that's a little lame, but, hey, I like it, and that's what matters to me. So, I guess simple is better.
