I have looked all over the Minecraft Forums about installing texture packs on a Mac and I'm about to give up. I've tried putting Minecraft in the same folder as the texture pack (which causes minecraft to crash), I've tried manually unzipping the "minecraft.jar" file and installing the texture pack like that (which also causes it to crash), I've literally tried everything. If someone has any other technique that might work, please tell me. Also, tell me where I can find a texture pack that works really well with that technique so I can tell if it's just my computer that's screwed up. Thanks!
Put the Minecraft app in a folder called Minecraft, copy the contents of the texture pack into the Minecraft folder, and play it like you normally would.

Already tried that, but I didn't work (Minecraft Crashes). Thanks though...
So, here's what you're gonna wanna do. Open up Finder, click the Library folder, go into the Application Support folder, inside the massive amount of folders in there there should be one called "minecraft". Open the minecraft folder and there should be a bin, resources, saves, and texturepacks, place your still zipped texture packs into the trexturepacks folder. THEY MUST REMAIN ZIPPED DO NOT UNZIP THE THE TEXTURE PACKS YOU DOWNLOAD. This was a source of serious grief for me until I realized it. Now, run minecraft, go to mods and texture packs and your downloaded packs should be there! ENJOY!

also if you want to zip a folder you have to select all files in the folder and then compress it and then rename it
compressing just the folder will not work

Ok So I was having problems installing texture packs so heres what I did
Reinstalled minecraft (deleted all the folders except saves and started it back up) this probably was not necessary though
Then if your using safari like myself go to preferences then general and uncheck Open "safe" files. This makes it so it doesn't automatically unzip it. Since then they've been working great.

I've been having the same problem that this guy was having, the first problem I eradicated involved the discovery was that there is a 'Library' folder in both the HD and in everyones different username (each with an application support) so I finally found the texturepacks folder, then I tried to rezip my files, which made them show up in the texturepacks folder, but they didn't work. So I ask you, what exactly do you mean select all files in the folder and then compress it? I'm going to poke around with this a bit, and if I can't figure that out I'm just going to re-download the six that I just got with 'safe' off.
Thanks guys for all your help, I'm finally on the cusp of enjoying retexturing Minecraft.
Roosaflouse, I see its been a while but if you or anyone else needs help with this, I HAVE THE FIX!
(MAKE BACKUPS ALWAYS)
1. make sure your minecraft is working, if it isn't delete everything in the 'username/library/application support/minecraft' folder except your saves and run and patch minecraft
2. find the texture pack that that you like and insert the ZIPPED file into the texture packs folder in the minecraft directory (see above step). Run minecraft, go to mods and texture packs and choose your pack.
3.if it still doesn't work, unzip the texture pack, go inside the folder it creates and select all folders/files within that e.g. (terrain folder, terrain.png, mob folder ...etc.) right click and select compress #of files.
4. take the zip it creates, rename it and place in the texture pack folder in the minecraft directory.
5. Run minecraft select your pack, and ENJOY!
Hope this helps, because i was tearing my hair out over this problem for quite a while
