So I have a question or three that I wasn't able to answer after I poked and looked about the internet for several hours.
In an attempt to create my own texture pack, I extracted the terrain.png file from the Minecraft.jar file in the /.minecraft folder. I have modified it, zipped it back up and then dropped into the texturepack folder that the game links too. However when I select the pack, nothing changes in game.
So can anyone tell what I did wrong or point me to a step-by-step tutorial?
I'd really appreciate it!

Your problem, is you need to zip the files inside the folder, isntead of the folder itself. So, if you have some folder called LOL, go inside the LOL folder and select all of the items and right click and add to archive and make sure its .zip
Its hard to tell what is wrong exactly. I suggest downloading a pack that is known to work, replace its terrain.png with yours, then delete everything else from it, and see if that works. If it does, then you just screwed something up.

I tried this using the Pokemon Texture Pack, checked to ensure it worked, edited a texture map, rezipped it and then is quit working :/

You shouldn't have to rezip anything. Open it with winrar(or something similar), then replace their terrain.png with yours.

Well I'll give it a go later, I still would like to what I'm doing wrong so I don't have to bother writing over another person's work.

I'm confused by what you mean here...searching "mt friend" on youtube brought up nothing relevant to my question...
