I'm making a custom 32x pack for my server, and while the blocks are easy enough to make and work on, I'm finding the armors exhausting. In order to see the changes I'm making, I end up saving the file, dropping it into a zip folder, patching that zip folder into the game with Xau's lovely utility, firing the game up, and then looking at it and swearing because that one pixel didn't end up where I thought it would.
I know the MCSkinEdit program is able to do 16x armor textures, but can it handle 32x? Or is there an alternative application I could use that would make this whole process less grating?

I haven't seen one. But you don't have to patch further than the first time now. Just add the edited armor to the pack and start MC. Are you using the new patcher? Or Xau's older version?
Would at least remove one of the annoying steps

I been using MC-skinEdit too, I really wish they would add support with editing 32x textures as well. It's a pain in the ass to not see a preview of what you have been working on. I hope they would hear our call. I've posted on the official thread of MCskinedit too
Not that I'm aware of. You're probably going to have to just use whatever program you're using. I'd just open the original files and keep the original image as the bottom layer for reference. Yeah, It'll get tedious to constantly check back and forth in-game, but I don't know of any other way.
