Now that I have finally gotten the rest of my packs updated, it's time I did some more work on this one. This pack has been idle for a bit so if there is a large amount of dust, try not to breath it.
Welcome to my work in progress 32x pack. It is a high-magic fantasy themed pack with bright light colored textures.
Textures are hand done, with filters, by me. No Google images were harmed in the making of the textures.
Well if you're tired of 16px packs then why not?
Just don't go with the radioactive grass haha.
There's also a little tileing issue with the dirt. Not sure if you noticed that little rectangle and the circle in the center.
The stone also looks a bit out of place next to the dirt in my opinion. What kind of pack are you making? Got any theme in mind or art style?
Why not? If your interested in it it could be a nice change of pace. Take a look at some of the others that are posted on here to get ideas and a feel for it. Also that hole "not many people use HD," or "it takes away from the game," is a pile of crap. There's piles of peeps that use HD packs, and its not very difficult anymore with the Xau installer and such. Heck I swap between different packs 4x4 to 256x256+ daily if I feel like it. XD
If you really are tired of 16x16, and are interested in exploring higher resolutions, you should just go ahead and do it! Who cares if you get a couple of downloads less, in the end it's your artistic fulfillment that matters most.
The extra resolution may feel strange in the beginning, but I think you will get used to it pretty quickly and improve with every tile. Once you feel more confident, you can always go over the first few tiles again.
As for the textures so far, I think the dirt is a bit too noisy. I like the pattern you have for the smooth stone, but maybe you can tint the gray a bit to make it more interesting. The cobblestone seems a bit "padded", that is, you blended in the outlines of the cobblestones softly all around. I think the outlines will look better if they are crisp along the top of each stone, where you also got your highlight, and then more blended towards to bottom.
I also would like to say I greatly approve of your choice to go all handmade! :smile.gif:
It's a difficult decision when you get used to a certain scale. :smile.gif:
Moving up to 64x64 scares the daylights out of me (aaargh! so many pixels!!) and 16x16 also scares me (eeeek! Where's all the pixels gone?!!). However, you are more than capable of doing a cool 32x32 pack, mate, and your ideas for things are always very original, so I would expect to see something eye-catching and stimulating whatever you come up with.
Go as far as you feel comfortable with it. I for one always love seeing what you come up with.
This could turn out to be really interesting, I'd love to try your texture if you ever finish it : P
Anyway, I agree to what someone above said... That the stone could have a tint of the gray removed, or just change the pattern of it so that it's not so... hypnotizing x)
Did some playing around with the grass texture and biomes
Tropical grass
Cold Grass
Bah! Stupid caution messages, going to poke them about getting my domain white listed. I'm not about to downgrade to a free image host site when I already pay for my own. :tongue.gif:

Grass looks horrible in my opinion. I'm not sure what you're trying to do, or what theme you're going with, but I would strongly suggest you rethink the grass. If you want to do like an tropical island or something, I would suggest getting rid of the flowers and using something likes this for the colors. The dirt looks a bit better and so does the stone. http://www.biloxischools.net/schools/be ... lower1.jpg
You think that's bad? You should see my initial test pattern for it.
>_>
But yea, I am mostly playing with the colors and what I can do to vary the texture using the color channels and specialized biome colors. Expect the final grass texture to be quite a bit more refined instead of just large splots of color.

After quite a bit of fiddling, I finally decided to abandon the flower idea. I just couldn't get it to work without making the grass look like it had developed the pox.
So I have gone with a more 'traditional' leafy ground cover. Think clover or ivy or something of that nature.

Grass: Good color choice and all that. There's a little black square that messes up the tiling though, so just fix that. The side grass doesn't look that great though. I don't think you should use like the same type of grass that you used on the top. Maybe make like the top 5-10 pixels be like the top and then have some sort of mossy strips of grass go down 2/3 of the block.
Dirt: A bit too dark, but I like how it looks. I really suggest you light it up
Sand: I actually like it. Good job on that. Maybe a bit too orange? I'm not really sure, it's hard to tell from the screenshot.
Rock: Doesn't tile too well. Those top two brown spots make it tile really well with the dirt, but bad when tiling with rock.
Cobble: Looks pretty good, though the colors are a bit too much like the smooth stone, and the dark outlines could use some variation.
Gravel: Doesn't tile well either, but I like it, especially the brown color. Maybe extend that brown color out a bit, or make a smoother transition between the colors?
Yea, I think 32x is still a little small to have the kind of color variation you find in natural stone so I may have to tone it down a bit for the smooth stone.
I took a look at some of my cobblestone buildings and I think I'm going to redo it into stone blocks instead of the cobble look. The cobbles look fine for roads but not so great for walls.
The grass side block is something I slapped together so it would at least match somewhat with the top.
Dirt is indeed quite dark. It looks great on the surface but caves through it are practically pitch black. So yea, that's getting a brightening up. Probably make the current color the loam color right under the grass when I do a proper side grass.
As for tiling, that's an on-going thing. I do a lot of pixel by pixel tweaking as I find stuff. This is complicated somewhat by the fact that each tile is at least three layers so I'm not tiling just the one texture.

Did a little more work on this pack tonight.
Got the initial concepts put down for lava, obsidian, coal, iron ore, and redstone ore.
I have a feeling this is going to be a great pack! Nice work so far!
I agree that the gravel needs to tile a little better and maybe the smoothstone a bit too because its going look a bit ugly from far away at the moment >.>

Sleekcraft! Check it out!
I usually dont like most 32 bit clean stone, but sometimes a pack suprises me :smile.gif:
I would recommend trying one. I tried it but never finished mainly cause its double the workload (unless your doing textures from a nother game)

Curse PremiumAfter reading over some of the advice and spending some more time with the textures I now have this:
I took the stone towards more of a pink granite, cleaned up some of the more obvious problems with the dirt, and redid the cobblestones entirely.

Curse PremiumAlso came up with some sand and gravel
I really hope they get the image linking straightened out sooner rather than later.
