Eh, I don't think it's ugly, just plain. The texture packs give it more life and character, the default is plain and simple. Its the difference between bread and butter, or toast and jam.
Nah. I think minecraft looks fine, the default textures blend nicely together, that is something a lot of fan-made texture packs don't do very well except a few of course.

I'm asking you, as a friend... Just...put an end to me.
It's not ugly, just kind of boring, a little to overbright for my tastes. I prefer a 32x32 texture pack that is essentially just a darker re-style of Minecrafts normal look, not photo-realistic (tiling is terrible, even when the artist attempts to fix the images, photorealistic textures just don't look good in a game where everything consists of cubes.
Regardless, I'm fine with Minecrafts default textures, they could be better, but it's not really a big deal. In contrast to that though, the sunsets/sunrises are amazing. Sure, they're pixelated, but amazing nevertheless. Does minecraft use a skysphere rather than the traditional skybox? There's not even the slightest hint of an edge in the sky.
