I'm working on a texture pack for Ancient China because I have had trouble finding any texture packs that would suit Eastern architectural projects or general experience(items, including tools, armor and weapons). On that note, if you know any Eastern texture packs, please do direct me. The most I have found were ninja or samurai-themed texture packs that only touched on armor and weapons. So I have a few questions.
Who would be interested in an Ancient Chinese texture pack? Naturally, I am, which is why I'm working on it. Being rather proud of my national heritage, I have some decent knowledge on China's history, but I want to create an amalgamation of sorts, of all the different time periods. I just want it to suit an ancient Chinese environment, given that I have already seen texture packs of other past civilizations like Rome or Egypt.
There's going to be some discrepancies since Chinese fiction and folklore will influence some design aspects. Diamonds in Minecraft already act unrealistically, so I figure that I can replace it with a material of much more significance in Chinese culture: Jade. I had considered replacing gold with jade before, since jade served more for ceremonial purposes in armor and weapons than any actual practical applications. However, I see it more fit to leave gold as it is, since it has seen use as currency in the past and it was used in decorating past artifacts (although the gold itself was of little significance). I may consider replacing gold with silver, since silver was of greater interest to the Chinese.
When it comes to weapons, the bow (and arrows) should be simple enough, although I have yet to decide which particular bow model I want to use. In regards to swords, I want to have different swords dependent on the material. I probably want the wood sword replaced with a spear, and a jade (diamond) sword would be a jian. In typical wuxia fiction, jian are portrayed as supernaturally powerful and are sometimes plot devices. It is true that jian are one of the more difficult Chinese swords to wield, so their distribution were generally with the skilled and higher up military personnel, such as generals. As for stone and iron, I'm trying to decide which one would be the dao/dadao. Dao and dadao were cheaper to manufacture and train soldiers to use, so it's only a matter of determining which material would get it and what weapon would be used for the remaining material. Armor, I'll probably go looking around a bit for a sense of aesthetics.
Glass blocks, I'm not certain about. Glass was used more for decoration, not so much use in windows. There was a lot of open air in Chinese architecture for belief reasons. I may use an ornate Chinese window anyways, just for simplicity's sake, but the design is likely to obscure vision and reduce practical use. The doors will probably have some transparency, but the transparent part might see an ornate design as well. Paintings will just be a variety of old Chinese works. Bricks will have colors changed to better suit the pack. I was considering making wool silk, but honestly it works either way. It may just be some issues since people sometimes use colored wool in construction (aside from flooring) but meh, suspension of disbelief. TNT, I'm still thinking over what to make it in this texture pack, but it's great since there's gunpowder.
Those are just some of my ideas for now and I would like to hear from you (especially in regards to weapons). I'll put the texture pack up once I'm done, for those who are interested, but just be warned that it might take a while and you might not like the results.
Nice idea, also agreed with StugAce, make it in 16x16
Also fyi, I think Painterly Pack has some Chinese door or glass block in their texture pack...

Yeah, among my group of IRL friends/Minecraft players, one guy recommended making a 16x16 AND a 64x64 so that there's something for everyone. It might take a little work, but if enough people are interested I may very well be motivated to do so.
And yeah, when I was customizing a Painterly Pack I took notice of Chinese windows, doors and lanterns (which were in place of torches).
I'd love to see a good 64x64 texture pack to use for Chinese and Japanese-style construction. I've cobbled together something decent that's a mix of Misa and Meine-Kraft Asia, but I'd still love to be able to do tatami floors and shoji screens, etc.
I know there's a difference between Three Kingdoms Chinese architecture and Sengoku-jidai Japanese architecture, but I'd love a pack that could do both, and the Japanese thread got horribly derailed by a troll. :sad.gif:

Haha, yes. That would be an honor. The only one I haven't seen is probably Walls of Babylon, I'll have to look into that.
