a png is just a enhanced version of a gif that is designed with support of alpha channels for high quality transparent images AND NOTHING ELSE!!!!

There isn't -any- code malicious or otherwise. Heck if you open the terrain.png in an editor and take a screen shot of it and then save that screen shot as a .png without an alpha channel and no comment, you will have an identical copy of the original file. Nothing in it but pixels I'm afraid.
Besides, for something like this to even have a hope of working there would have to be a gaping huge security hole in the way Java loads .png files. Used to be you could do stuff like specify image dimensions that were smaller than the actual size of the data and use the overflows to do insertion attacks, but those days are gone. Doing that kind of thing in a .png file now just results in the loader throwing an error for a malformed file.
Its a mod that exposes the OpenGL shaders and lets you do all sorts of fun stuff to make the game look amazing.
(Provided your graphics card supports it.)
