For the DoF effect (the mod works for 1.7 but I'm not using it):
Make a pure black copy of the texture pack (keep transparencies!).
Use regular pack to take your screenshot and log out without moving.
Change to black texture pack. Don't move! Take a screenshot with each fog level. You should now have 5 screenshots.
From here it's easier with Photoshop than GIMP, sadly. In PS:
Make a new image with all 5 screenshots as layers.
Merge the four taken with the black pack.
Desaturate and invert them. (If needed, modify this layer to customize -- ie. stupid sheep in my screenshot. To focus on a far object you would skip the invert, I think.)
In Channels, duplicate one of the channels (red or green, etc). Name it "depth map" for reference.
Reselect RGB palate.
Select the regular screenshot layer. In Filters -> Blurs choose "Lens Blur."
Choose the "depth map" as the source. Change the settings as desired.
Thankfully the rain and thunder stopped allowing me to carry on my journey North. The weather is taking a change for the worse as it gets colder and colder the past few hills I have overcome.
The last mountain of the day I would climb before setting up camp gave way to a stunning view of whats ahead for me. Snow!!!!
I've been looking for a nice snow biome to photograph, and I finally found one. It wasn't as pretty as I wanted but it had this really strange partially frozen lake with a few squids in it. Here is my day 5.
I also loved Spruu's jumper (http://i.imgur.com/DfRMH.jpg) because it's not only a great shot, it captured wildlife doing something ridiculous. It's HARD to take photos of minecraft critters. As soon as they do something great worth screenshotting, they move on almost instantly. HOLD STILL YOU DAMN SHEEP!
But I had to go with Not_a_frog's squid because of it's mood. It's dark and ominous, and the jet black silhouette of the squid against the pale light from above really adds to the creepiness of the whole scene. Plus it goes great with the contest's theme.
I flew around for a while and found one of the most amazing places i have ever seen in minecraft. It had a space inside of the mountain where it has 2 holes at the top and 3 ways in (from each side of the mountain). No lighting was changed in the picture.

Today's capture "The nights are drawing in"
It's....it's.....glorious.
You beautiful *******, I hope that you win.
could i ask, where are the pictures on the main post come from? Also, are you planning to do anything with the pictures from the contest or is it just for fun?
Most of the pics in my main post were made just for this thread. A few from the first contest are in the pics there. I'll probably add some of these too. I want to have a separate "gallery" page on jolicraft.com that'll have tons & tons of pics. All the winners from the contest & stuff. I'll get on that someday :tongue.gif:
I love tundra biomes, to me they are one of the most beautiful places in minecraft, ever changing. When you said enter today I remembered I had a fantastic save I was testing my textures on, I ended up getting stuck on top of a pine tree at night, with no resources and it started to snow... perfect I said, this is what minecraft is.

"The nights are drawing in"
This wasn't an easy call. I loved all the day 4 entries.
CowThing's double waterfall (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3609329/minestuff/joliphotos/joliday4.png) was beautiful. Love the position of the sun and the panoramic effect. And the squids!

And Domino's sheep is so simple, but so effective. Love the composition. (http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6703/76450002.png)
