I have been using this texture for a long time since like march or April and I think it started in 1.8 but when ever you go 2 - 4 blocks down it just gets dark and makes it extremely hard to find ores any idea why that happens?
Yeah, Notch decided to add some "void fog/black fog", partly to add some ambiance, and partly, I suspect, to keep texture packs like these from working underground as efficiently as they used to. Here's a link to a mod that partially removes the fog, making this texture pack work a little more efficiently. Enjoy!
Edit: If anyone finds a mod that makes it even easier to see- like one that keeps the backdrop a consistent shade of blue instead of turning black at certain depths- please post it here!

Another excellent mod that will both remove fog and allow you to change texture packs without logging out (in addition to providing you with many other options and very likely increasing FPS) is OptiFine, which is now updated for 1.0. OptiFine HD!
Thanks, Dave! I was wondering when this would come out for 1.0 and didn't realize that this removes the black fog near the bottom of the world- I'll add it to the first post in just a moment!
Strongestcraft's been updated! I've changed how enchantment tables work so that they display (mostly) English words instead of the Standard Galactic Alphabet. Enjoy! As always, let me know what you think about this texture pack- if you have any suggestions, post them here!
"Why don't you keep all the ore's original textures or just change them all to be solid colored blocks?"
Early testing with keeping all the textures the same showed that 95-100% of people quickly became frustrated using this pack after mining great distances to reach what they thought were diamonds, only for it to be something they didn't need like coal, iron or redstone again and again and again. By changing the textures so that they're all different, they can be individually identified in pitch black areas, which is where you'll see around 95% of the ores underground: in pitch black areas where you can't see what color they are. The way the pack has ores now is the most efficient it can be without making the textures bulkier/thicker.
How is it obnoxious when people use these? As someone who has owned, administrated and moderated more than ten Minecraft servers, I've never had any problem with people using this, or any other clientside mods which enhance their gameplay experience. Games are meant to be played for fun, not to feel like a chore, and since my mod helps people get to the "fun" parts of gameplay more quickly, I'm happy to say that I've done the community a service by providing this for everyone to use freely.
this can be good and bad
bad ppl can see chests but u can see them too
good to see someone about to greif your server or about to burn your house down
really think it makes moderating server ezier
if you dont want mud huts / cave dwellings under ground in creative
ummm... I have to say, when i just looked at it, it seemed good, but in the picture with the three dungeons, next to the left one, if you look closely, you can see a fourth one. Really like i though, good job!
I don't recall them adding new blocks, aside from differently colored eggs; long story short, without having to update since November of last year, I'm almost 100% certain that this is still fully compatible with the latest version of Minecraft. They've reeeaaally slowed down on adding new blocks/items/anything at all compared to how frequently they used to update, and that was back when it was a one-man operation. I wonder what happened... Ah well.

No, really. Since eggs are located in the items.png, which I intentionally left out of Strongestcraft so it'll update automatically without me having to do a thing, (Plus I can't think of any obvious benefits to be gained from editing anything in the items.png), there's no need for me to ever touch it. As long as Notch only keeps adding new items and not new blocks, I could go on leaving this texture pack the way it is now without ever having to update it, since the item-related parts of it update themselves.
Edit: Well, whaddaya know. A new 16x16 texture that looks almost exactly like obsidian was added, even though no new blocks were added this update. May as well update the pack to include it.
