Can anyone teach me, link a guide, or give me some tips on creating or editing my own textures? I've messed around by remixing textures, even done -some- recoloring. I'd really like to learn how to make my own texture, though. So would anyone mind helping?
Erm...not what i'm looking for at all. I'm looking for a guide on how to MAKE my own texture pack, how to edit it and make my own textures, not how to put it all together -after- I edit.

Open minecraft.jar, located in Appdata. Find terrain.png. Edit. Profit.

And make something original, or I will kill you.
I....believe you misunderstand, or perhaps my wording is off. I know how to find the terrain.png. I know "how" to edit it. I'm looking to learn such skills as how to make my own texture from stratch, edit colors, etc. I want to build it from the ground up.
A good start is to get a photo editing program that allows transparencies such as paint.net or photoshop. Paint.net is free if Photoshop is out of reach.
From there, I usually grab another pack of the size I wish it to be and use it as a template. Eventually you will weed out their pack and you will have all your textures.

Indeed. I am in the same boat my good sir/madam. I need to know the differences between what is classified as a 16 x16 and a 32 x 32.....I have a faint idea, but need clarification. It would be also nice of someone to make a tutorial in video format...at least showing the process of making a certain texture pack.

I think this is what you are asking. XD
I have both paint.net and gimp, trying to figure out which is better. What i'm asking, on the other hand, is how do you design your own texture? Such as...How do you start? Say for a block of wood...do you just make an all brown block then draw squiggly lines on it?
So, you're looking for how to get better at art.
I suggest looking at other texture packs, looking over more professional pixel art, and searching the web for various tutorials. "So You Want to be a Pixel Artist" is a particularly good and popular one that's good for pixel art in general.
After you've learned the basics, practice. Show other people your pixel art and get critique, as this is the best way to get better. Good luck, and ask me if you have any specific questions, as I am mediocre at pixel art.

I've always been this way. A patched-up, crazy matryoshka.
