First off:
- I made sure all the pictures are in png file format and of the right size (multiples of 16 and 2 ex. 16x16, 32x32)
- I used an image editor that supports trasparency (Paint.NET)
- I put the pack as a .zip as is necessary
All I really did was edit the cursor from an existing texture pack I have* and then repackage that as a separate zip folder. I copied it to the .minecraft/texturepacks folder as usual, but the game itself doesn't recognize it, indicated by lack of a description and a greyed-out version of the original pack's icon.
*to the creator of this not-to-be-named texture pack: I do not plan to redistribute it as my own, especially since it's such an insignificant change (a very slight change in one file) and everything else is the same, which would be plagiarism. I did this for private use only.
Any help? Everything checks out when I compare it to the other texture packs I use that the game recognizes.
Did you zip up the files directly, or did you zip up the folder they are in? If the picture is grayed out, it seems like your folder structure might be wrong. It would be easiest to upload the .zip so others can have a look at it. It's not like you would be claiming it to be your own work.
I did the latter - I zipped up the folder they were in. Do I have to zip up all the files inside the folder? I will try that and come back. If not then I'll come back with an upload of the pack.

Yes, zipping the folder they're in zips the folder with them. You need to zip the actual files.
Ok, so I got minecraft to recognize the texture pack by zipping the files. But I have a new problem (that doesn't warrant a new thread): minecraft now won't recognize the changes I made to the cursor, which was my whole reason for editing that one file and duplicating the entire pack.
Why is it not recognizing the change? I stuck to the same resolution, stuck to the same overall size of the icon, and definitely kept it in the right location.
The pack is uploaded in my last post.

Disclaimer: I did not make this pack. All I did was change the cursor to something of my choosing: a range-adapted gunsight.
