Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Abandoning this account....I used to spend way too much time trolling here....If you see a user around named yyujimgirl445, that's me...until then peace.
Well....I guess I will really quickly thrown in a few facts as well as opinions, and hopefully steer clear of the rage-fest that is going down.
For high-res textures looking "like ****" because of low-poly models:
Pretty much every single game out there uses low-poly objects. Wanna know why? It's very taxing on any system that plays games to have every single object on the screen be super high-poly; adding a high resolution texture on top of it is just cruising for a bruising.
Most games use a program like Crazy Bump to make it -seem- higher-poly than it really is; once you get right up against the object it becomes slightly noticeable that it doesn't have all of those polys.
One of the projects we're working on is getting a 1024 texture on to a plane. Not a cube; a plane. We bake a higher poly model onto it in order to make it look good, but it is -still- just a flat plane.
Saying that low-poly models look like **** when they have a high-resolution texture on them is saying that literally every single non-Indie game since 2000 looks like ****. Because we ALL know that games like Mirror's Edge, Fable, Wind Waker, and Assassin's Creed were so visually displeasing that no one ever wanted to play them :3
On opinions being utter fact:
Everybody can like whatever they like. But trying to force everybody to like what you like just starts up huge, ridiculously avoidable battles.
Atkniro, you've been heading on to 256/128 texture threads a -lot-, yet you claim to hate them and think they're ugly BECAUSE of the size. If that's the case, why are you going there? To force your opinion on people and make them angry. Let them have their textures, and enjoy your own personal favorites. There is -no- reason to go after them.
Personally, I find that having more pixels allows for a wider range of abilities. You can truly make some amazingly unique gaming experiences if you try (Kirby's Epic Yarn, anyone?). I don't use higher resolution textures because Minecraft already tends to randomly lag out for me when using a 32x texture, and because most of them don't really tile too well. However, I'm not so stuck in my ways that if I saw a truly awesome 128/256 texture I wouldn't try it. Dismissing an entire section of texture packs because they "totally ruin the feel of the game" is just sad. Remember that the standard texture resolution in non-portable games is 1024x1024; 256 is still very small.
Troll: adds new 256x256 texture pack to game, logs onto minecraft forums! Hey guys this texture pack is soo good..
Forum members: I dont like hi res packs it doesnt look right makes it blurry and unrealistic!
Troll: So Are you saying that the high res texture packs makes a unrealistic game more unrealistic
forum members: yes
Troll science: 256x256 pack wins!
Well **** I had a long reply but I closed FF accidentally. So this is a bit half arsed
Basically, all that crap about low poly stuff is irrelevant as MC uses flat planes with 90 degree corners and modern games use rounded edges.
2 threads is hardly a lot, exaggeration implying weak point there.
You admit yourself they tile badly. Not to mention that they look like **** in the distance, especially the one in the other thread about hi res I posted in

i lol at how you think that stating your opinion more times makes it more valid... protip, it doesn't, unless you work in the media, in which case it might, and lets be honest, does it really matter what the resolution of a pack is? i mean, if it looks good use it, if it doesn't don't, my friends use simplistic packs, i don't like them, not at all, i like a pack that is interesting and a nice change from the standard, i don't go and tell them that what they use is ****.

It's okay; I find your fully-thought out responses to be a bit half arsed anyway >_>
See that? What I just did thar? That's an opinion. Me having it doesn't matter to you, because your opinion is that what you say is brilliant and well thought out. Also, if someone disagrees with you, or thinks you're an idiot, they're clearly wrong to.
This is called having opinions. Opinions are beautiful, and everyone has them, but no one's opinions are utter fact that everyone else should obey. In this case, you're getting pissy because people have different artistic tastes to you.
And the problem isn't that you have an opinion; it's that...hm...OH! I know the perfect comparison :3
Say that there's this art style you hate. Modern, let's call it. You can't stand it, you find it pretentious and ugly. So, what do you do? You go to several Modern art galleries and proceed to scream at everyone for having the wrong tastes in art. You call them names, you say the art looks like ****, you throw a tantrum if anyone tells you to leave.
That's you. That's what you're doing. It's not intellectual. None of this is intellectual. This is a bunch of people, screaming at each other over the internet about resolution. Don't pretend for a second that any of this is intelligent.
Guess what? Video games use flat planes. No, seriously; they do. Flat, 90 degree planes. Not everywhere like Minecraft does, but they still use them. Or do you think that they round out every single house model? Polygons. Slow. Games. Down. The more you have, the slower it goes. They won't increase Poly-count unless it is necessary. Many of those rounded edges are -textures-. Pop in a game and slam against a wall.
Two threads is still too many. If I really hate one specific type of texture pack, guess what? I don't open it. You opening it and telling them "This is **** because all 128/256 textures are ****" does nothing for anybody. Then you call yourself a calm, intelligent person and insult anyone who calls you a troll for doing so. If nothing else, you're kind of a dickweed.
For starters, I'm not some "High-res, high-res, rah rah rah!" person. It's not my duty to say that every single one of them is more beautiful than Jesus on the cross giving the finger to Satan. It's not my job to defend them and put them on a pedestal. Most of the ones I looked at tiled badly. Guess what? Most of the 16x, 32x, and 64x also tile badly. They looked beautiful alone, but tile awfully. This is because tiling is hard. However, they do look good from a distance because from a distance, detail doesn't show easily. The closer you get, the more obvious it is that they tile badly. From a distance, all you can pick out is color really.
Essentially, you're toting opinion as fact, and you're getting pissier than I was when I first got my period at 12. Maybe you are 12. Either way, you don't need to act your age. Act mature. It's super easy to not be a dickweed.

Ok, you seem to have missed the point of the thread. Debating tends to involve two different parties defending and attacking others opinions. I don't know if you have ever been in a debate, but that doesn't give you an excuse for not knowing what it is while you roll on with some OMG U HAVE SUPERIORITY COMPEX reply. In case you don't actually know what that is, a perfect example is at the end of your reply where you presume to tell me I am a 12 year old mentally, and need to act my age and be mature and not be a dickweed. Which is ironic as calling me a 12 year old/immature/dickweed is a really immature thing to do. Not only that, HURP DURP YOU ARE 12 just happens to be one of the shittiest but overused excuses ever.
I don't know if you intentionally ignored the "ed" on rounded, or if you are just bad at reading for any reason. I would like to believe you missed it, but your patronising tone suggests otherwise. I want you to go to google, and click images. Look up "australian 50 cent coin" Look at the shape of it, then hit and hold ctrl, then scroll down. Look at the coin again. It happens to appear circular, even though we both know its not. Now hit ctrl + 0 to return to normal. In case you can't be bothered, click this link and apply the process. Its actually impossible to make a perfect circle, zoom in enough and it will look like that coin I linked to earlier.
The other thread about Hi res I have commented in actually features a texture pack so bad at tiling and long distance viewing that I felt a need to comment. I really have no idea what the OMG SO AMAZING posters can see in it. Look at the far away lava and tell me it looks good That lava barely tiles at all. If you can still only say LOOK COLOURS ONLY then you really have an eye problem or you have your head up your ****.
I don't know if you haven't noticed, but making a tiling image isn't that hard. Especially in game where EVERY MODEL as in EVERY LAST ONE is perfectly square. Not square as in equal edges, but in a builders sense. Maybe if the game had a model style like Team fortress 2, then it could be a bit harder, as everything is either exaggerated or made less prominent in that game. But this is Minecraft, Minecraft has a model style that involves cubes. Cubes have a flat area to texture, versus Gordon Freeman's head, for instance. Tiling is easy in this game. While I don't claim that the bad 16px/32px textures have good tiling, the ones that do are extremely popular. Look at painterly, I despises the pack but it tiles. Look at dokus. It tiles. Both are extremely popular. Bare in mind that by dokus I mean the fan remakes, before you make an uneducated comment on it being out of date.
Essentially, you don't know what a debate is or how one works, and you are making bad points more often than my 11 year old sister. Maybe you are my 11 year old sister. Either way, you don't need to make such horrible points. Act smart. Its super easy to be intelligent

either way, there is no need to debate which looks better because it all eventually comes down to preference... it's like debating why one colour is better than another, and since you know so much ab out debating, i'm hoping that you realize that you have had more turns than speakers and thus are essentially cheating.

Debating isn't always the 3 speaker 2 turn heavily ruled ******** that schools and clubs do.
Think of it as not which colour is better, but rather think of it as being similar to deciding which style of architecture to choose
Its an unrealistic game.
