I can't seem to be able to add a texture pack. I put the .rar, and even extracted it into a file, and then I tried the minecraft.jar that I extracted, edited, and compressed into a .rar. Non of them would show up in the "select a Textur" list.
Ah, thanks, they show up now, but they won't take effect. I can select them, but they don't show up in the game.
EDIT Never mind, I had ziped a file that contain the textures, so I right clicked the Test folder and told it to zip. I was only supposed to zip the files inside the test folder into a .zip folder
The internal structure of the .zip must match the structure of the minecraft.jar for them to work.
Most common mistake is to have a folder at the top level of the zip.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
I still find opening minecraft.jar and dropping the terrain.PNG directly in there easier...
That's only good if you don't mind shutting minecraft down completely to swap textures and if you only have the one file you are changing. With some packs that have a dozen or so files, using the .zip is far easier.
