I'm looking at the terrain.png and I have no clue what the numbered parts are.
Ok, I know some of them, so I'll note on that:
*I know number three is what shows up in map viewers/editors, but where is the fire graphic directly? Not in terrain.png, apparently?
*I presume 4 & 5 are water and lava, but when I edited them directly, the graphics didn't change. Where is water/lava edited anyway when it comes to graphic changes?
Fire, water, lava, and the portal are all procedurally generated by the game, the textures in the terrain.png are just placeholders marking the place in the image where the real textures are generated by the game.
1 is a spider web, it isn't used.
2 I'm not sure about but I think it's the portal placeholder
3 is a placeholder for the fire animation
4 & 5 are placeholders for the water and lava animations

he's correct
No he's not, at least not about the water and lava
Those are NOT just placeholders for the textures, they ARE the textures, editing them changes them in game
No it doesn't unless you use a mod or go to 32x unless something changed really recently that I'm not aware of. (32x without a mod results in non-animated water and fire showing up on bricks and the like) I think one of the mods that did the water and lava animation required you to put the textures in separate files but I'm not sure if that's still true or not.

Damn you're right... I'm so used to working in 32x32 that I just assumed it was the same for all sizes

Editing the animation is much more difficult, you need to make a separate file, its hard to explain
Yeah, but only for 16x16, not for anything higher
In this case you would be right

Along with that, I tried editing the water/lava but it hasn't changed.
