I'm sure that this has been asked before since the dawn of Texture Packs, but since I wasn't around to see such a result, what does the core community of Minecraft consider the best resolution for texture packs, or rather, what do you prefer?
Myself? I prefer anything in 16x16 or 32x32, keeps that old-school retro feel that Minecraft was designed for.
I love 16x as it keeps the feel of minecraft.
I do sometimes go to 32x when it keeps a consistent feel but needs that little bit extra to show the details.
The higher packs seem slighty silly, all this detail and realism for something which is still then locked into squares.
32 maintains the best balance in my opinion. Though, I do like the original 16 resolution, it wasn't the same once I installed packs such as doku's, Brown & Blooms etc.
64, 128 resolutions are OTT for me because I just don't like photo-realistic textures confined to block shapes.
All those low res chunky textures just don't look right to me any more. There are some really nice ones and some "simple" that I play with on occasion for a very clean-world look, but trying to create a detailed textures or complex themes with 16 pixel tiles seems to me to be as silly as most people think wrapping giant cubes with high resolution textures is.
i like 32 x 32 you still get some detail but the world looks normal, sure using 128 x 128 makes each block look amazing but the angles between blocks look so sharp it just looks... bad. imo.
16x16. They can still look nice, and I don't have to mess with the HD patcher or worry about extra lag (which I've only noticed with 128x128, really, but it was pretty bad, and I don't like using render distances below Far).
i like editing higher res ones but i dont really like them photo realistic because it looks strange, i like the higher res so its possible for adding detail to things like turning torches into candle sticks and making the flowers better.
I prefer 16x16 and 32x32. IMHO the complexity of the texture should match with the complexity of the geometry. Highly detailed textures on boxy geometry just doesn't seem to work.
Higher resolution textures could look good perhaps if they're heavily stylized. I think photo-based textures look absolutely out of place on cubes, I'd expect much higher polygon models to go with it. Also, texture filtering and mipmapping are definitely in order with such high resolution textures.
For now I'm only using 16x16 textures in the game, as I can't be bothered to patch my game for every update. I do hope Notch adds support for higher textures in the future, because there are a few 32x32 packs I'm eyeballing. XD
I generally go for 32 or 64, I'd like to stick with 16 but for some reason it gives me a headache. Right now I'm using a modified version of Brown and Bloom.
I voted for 128x128, but I would prefer 1024x1024 if there was some way to get that large of texture packs to work. I don't really like the super-realistic textures, though. The farm animals look creepy, in my opinion, in the "realistic" texture packs. By the way, if someone knows how to get a 1024x1024 texture pack to work, I would really appreciate it. The only way I know to install texture packs is with MCPatcher and it only supports up to 256x256, and the author doesn't seem to interested in supporting anything higher.

I occasionally use higher res when using themed packs, like Tron or Scribblecraft, but that's it.
HD-Minecraft looks like it's trying too hard (And grainy!)

I'm asking you, as a friend... Just...put an end to me.
i cant be arsed to do the hd fixes or whatever. when it comes to mods and stuff, im just

Just, yes.
