Yeah the resolution thing is an issue. I totally forgot that. I personally am sticking to 16x16 till notch makes an official way to use larger textures. Or also least until someone makes a mod that makes it easier to manage.
But bottom line. There is no excuse (except maybe that you like it that way lol) for every color cloth to have the same underlying texture simply recolored.
What if those who wanted to put the work into special texture cloth blocks also had an alternate pack with just recolored versions of whatever they use for cloth? Just like how the original Doku has two versions with and without flowers.
And before you say "hurr durr that's too much work," it's really not, especially if you're willing to put all the work into making customized textures for every single colored block in the first place. All you'd be doing for the alternates would be copy-pasting your original cloth texture and coloring it.

I probably would be less likely to die if I ran into the horde of zombies...
Can we also talk about how it will have a cloth sound effect? That would irritate me to no end if it looked like I was walking on special stones and it sounded like cloth.
Funny, I decided to do this before I even saw this thread. I don't think it's a bad idea really, as long as the textures are the colors they're supposed to be.
While I haven't done any of the drastic things you asked for, is this up to your "not just colored cloth" standards? I feel it holds to the cloth definition of the default while permitting a bit more creativity than just cloth would allow.
No, I'm not finished yet. Just out of ideas for the time being.
I went with 15 unique wool textures. I figured I could try my hand a decorating for a change. Some will make good wall treatments, some will be good carpets and some will make great beds.
I never make that kind of interior stuff, I guess I'll give it a try.
This one pack I used made it look like little pieces of patchwork. It was adorable.

So you wake up on a beach one day, and remember NOTHING. (Except your degree teachings in Engineering, Wilderness Survival, Metal work, Physics, Tech, Psychology, History, Dynamics, and Blocks.) You mine and build and survive for years and years.
Wow, I was only concentrating on flooring; I really need to extend in another dimension.
Question. Is there any way to standardize so that these blocks don't look drastically different and awkward between packs? It sucks having to tell someone to download a pack in order to appreciate a construction just right.
I was already considering this myself for my 'persia' style texture pack meant for making dungeons. Each block would have the original color as it's main highlight but the patterns would be entirely different to allow for making different themed environments.
To those complaining that the constructions won't look right in another pack, just put a sign or two out front saying something like:

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
My pack has unique dye patterns, mostly for floors, walls, beds etc., but holy crap the weaves in the high-res Egypt pack up there is epic looking; nice work Nethellus.

*facepalm*
I'm not convinced that there's a "point" to colored cloth any more than I'm convinced that there's a "point" to Minecraft.
