I'd have to say yours are well under the minimum for the 256x256. Have you tried the 64/128?

There could be many reasons for this. For starters, did you patch over a previously patched game or was it a fresh install?
Also, memory is an issue with Minecraft in general and there is a video that should fix your issues. 64bit Java is highly recommended as well.
