For Minecraft it doesn't matter if you have JDK or JRE, either will do.
JDK includes JRE.
64-bit Java is the most important part, assuming you have at least 4GB of RAM and a 64-bit Operating System.
Anyway, you're better off modifying the Java Heap Size rather than launching it with batch.
Just edit it in the Java settings via the Windows Control Panel (not sure what the equivalent of this is for Linux or Mac)
Since you only have 2GB of RAM, I do not know how good of an idea this is. Basically you just download the Linux version of Minecraft (the Minecraft.jar) and put it in %appdata%/.minecraft
Then make sure you have the latest Java JDK.
Then just write a .bat file that should be in /.minecraft and look like this:
-Xmx is the maximum amount of RAM that Minecraft is allowed to use, and -Xms vice versa. Seeing how you only have 2GB of ram, I would not recommend you use 2GB as max, rather 1200 MB or something.
Then just run the .bat
You could, if you want, also use a compiler that converts .bat to .exe, thus have the Minecraft icon and so on (not necessary)

I have mine set to
-Xincgc -Xmx2048M
i have XP pro and talking to dad for $ for more ram..
For everyone having issues with it simply crashing: go download the new version of hd patcher. HD Patcher
It seems to use much less ram for bigger texture packs now, before it needed 2gb to load at the beggining then used 1gig now it just needs 1 gig for me. but i have 2gb video memory so it might be using that.
For the out of memory issues download the new hd patcher then go to options and set it to use more ram. you also may need 64 bit java and the download for that is on the first post of this thread.
(for 64 bit java u need 4gb of ram or over)
1. The JDK is not necessary, but recommended by everyone if you have problems.
If you are having problems with JRE, JDK isn't going to magically fix it.JDK INCLUDES JRE, Minecraft will still be using JRE even if you have JDK installed. No difference.
2. That method does NOT work on every machine. And yes, I am sure.
I guarantee that method works on every Windows machine (I assume you are referring to the Heap Size).
I haven't experimented with it in Linux or Mac, but I see absolutely no reason for it not to work... just need to find the Java Control Panel.

yep video memory :smile.gif: 8gig ram. i have a $1000 gaming rig
be sure to have everything closed you can close, like browser ect because they use a bit of ram then step it up by 100mb until it works or won't open because jvm can't allocate that much memory. once it can't allocate any more memory go down 100 and thats as far as you can go to using ram. if you can't get it without hitting ram limit try a lower res texture pack. like the 128x128 version or 64x64 versoin.

There are certain amounts of RAM that hit sweet spots with Java.768M is usually recommended. 768M 1024M (1G) 1536M 2048M (2G)

mines 1600mhz :tongue.gif:
and i would get more but don't have any use for it. after fx can run on 8 cores with 8gb ram so this is good enough for me. and before i get a ram upgrade i want to get a ssd :smile.gif:
and with the sweet spots thats interesting didn't know that.
Updated to 1.6.4 with 5.0.0 Hd textures and i keep getting black screen when loading. I uninstalled java 32 bit and installed java 64 bit now I get this error. Any ideas?

Are you on a 64 bit operating system?
Doesn't seem so.
Are you sure you installed Java 64-bit properly? And didn't install the browser-version?
Uninstall all versions of Java, make sure all Java files are deleted.
Either Uninstall with Revo Uninstaller, or uninstall, delete the Java folder(s) left over on your system, and clean your registry with CCleaner.
Then do a computer restart (optional, but recommended)
To run minecraft in 64 bit you need to buy minecraft. You can't be on a cracked loader. (and that error message is the exact same as one my friend got trying to use 64 bit java on a cracked loader.

Yep, can't enjoy these textures without a legit version of Minecraft. >:ohmy.gif:
Kidding, It's certainly possible. I had to increase my Java heap size to get it to work with the cracked launcher. I use it for LAN parties. =)
Anyone else think Notch needs a LAN launcher???

well there is the web launcher but you can't use mods and texture packs on it

how you do that??
