Currently it's 256 x 256 pixel tiles. That's a 4096 x 4096 terrain.png. But that's almost unworkable. The commonly accepted highest manageable size is 128 x 128 tiles for a 2048 x 2048 terrain.png.
Perhaps after more optimization MC will support higher rez textures.

I haven't generated a 256 px pack. I just state that as the high end limit because it's the highest resolution supported by Xau's MCPatcher.
I have seen a 256 though. Can't recall the name right now...

EDIT: That is wrong. MineReal isn't 256. I think NickHimself's is the only published 256 pack and it wa sunfinished...
