I just wanted to change a few textures, and probably not even publish it. How do you edit the files, and do I need to download anything like WinRar?

first serch %appdata% in 'Run' then hit '.minecraft' then 'Bin' then open the minecraft file with winRAR or similar. then all yo have to do is make a copy of the desired picture file, then edit it.
to edit i perfer to use Paint.net, its free to download from there site
once done editing save it to the desktop. after that right click on the file you just saved then hit 'send to'>'compressed (Zipped) Folder' then open the zipped folder with winrar then drag the modifide file to the original to over write it. thats prety much it. hope this helps
