Do you just make this stuff up as you go along? Clearly there's the basic mosaic which I bet you made after messing around with something of Mondrian's, but the rest of it?
First, I would like to say 'Thank you!' for appreciating my humble texture pack on such a deep level. This is going to be a long series of replies, I hope I don't bore you too much (sorry!)
I would assume you're referencing Piet Mondrian, the 18th/19th-century Dutch painter?
Honestly, I pretty much made things up as I went along. I started with a totally empty terrain.png. I used Doku's pack as inspiration for the color palette, and the colors in the final product were heavily influenced by his work. As for the mosaic design, well... I did the dirt block first. I knew I wanted to go with a simple pattern because I originally wanted SineCraft to be a very simple pack, but when I started I had no idea what it was supposed to look like. I started playing around with different kinds of patterns I could think of, and after about an hour of tweaking it, I had a pattern I was pleased with. After that, I created the rest of the resource blocks in the same vein (pardon the pun.) For the artificial/man-made blocks and items, I just tried to create something good :biggrin.gif: I took inspiration from various places, but tried to keep the designs original.
Short answer -- For any given block, I stared at an empty 16x16 square for a while and I just painted what came to mind :biggrin.gif:
I like that you take the block colour style from Doku. It looks good. I don't recognise the bookshelf or bricks though.
See, when I was using Doku's pack it was always about the color palette for me. The classic 16-bit RPG feel was great, but it was the color palette that really made his pack stand out to me. As for the bricks and the books, I wanted to do something a little different. I decided (eventually) that the bricks (and cobble) should be a simple brick-like pattern and that they shouldn't contrast too much, because at the time I was still going for a simple pack. The bookshelves, on the other hand, came at a point where the pack was starting to become more modern in it's approach. I was using various shades of colors to convey pseudo-3D and fake shadows on a lot of textures, and I wanted the books to share the love. I also wanted my bookshelves to be colorful.
I really like the way you do plants. Their elements are quadrangular as befits the pack, but they lack the property of symmetry and this makes them feel biotic. Also the way they interact in layers is great. The elements of your bricks and stones and dead wood things intersect and interlock like puzzle pieces, but only the organic elements form layers over themselves and others (like the mossy stone), which elicits a sense of growth. Excellent.
For the plants I tried to keep it close to the mosaic designs found in other blocks, but each with their own little spin. I wanted my wheat and grass to be thin but still have a defining feature, which is why they have the little square pods at the top of the stalks. I wanted the mossy cobble to appear that it had some form of green 'corruption' growing on it, so I painted some green plant-like squares in varying shapes and sizes and moved them over the existing cobblestone texture. It was a simple thing to do but I was pretty happy with how it turned out, and I'm glad to see that others are as well!
I also like the subtle way you've made it so that the more artificial a block is, the less its elements intersect and the greater their symmetry.
Well... as I previously said, when I started the pack I didn't have any clear direction and I just did things as they came. When I started doing chests and the furnace and such, I decided that those blocks should have a smoother look to them. I decided to keep the mosaic style (mostly) reserved for the raw materials in the world. Sandstone and cobble are exceptions, because even though they're found naturally in the world as a raw resource, I also like building with them, thus they get a brick pattern instead.
What are your thoughts about mobs? They are big enough that you could do interesting things with patterns, if you chose, but do you think of them as more aesthetically crystalline and artificial like your stone/dirt and manufactured blocks, or alive, like your plant blocks?
When I open up a skin file I get painter's block :biggrin.gif:
But really... I still haven't come up with anything good yet. I'm hoping my creativity shifts into high gear sometime soon because I really want to get the mobs done. I just don't want to force it. As for what they should be... well, definitely organic, which might be why I'm having such a hard time with them. With this pack I try to visualize things in straight lines and colors that don't contrast too much, or go very well together. But what's least straight and contrasts more than anything else? Organics.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to try the pack, and I'm glad you enjoy it!
Did you know that this pack also has custom water and lava? You can see it in-game if you patch the game for HD textures (even though this is a 16x16 pack) using MCPatcher.
OMG, i'm so glad that this pack is back. I remember being so upset that the pack wasnt updated. Tonight I just decided to do a search for it, just to download the unupdated pack. To my suprise it was updated! Sweet, glad to have Sinecraft back, it's a beautiful and original pack. Props Sine, props.

Well, it looks like minecraft decided
"That's a nice everything you've got there... it would be a shame if someone ****ING THREW IT IN ****ING SPACE! :3"
I love the stained glass style, very original! Although I would like it a lot more if the textures didn't have borders around them...it interrupts the tiling, and I think they would look spectacular if the patterns flowed from one block to another rather than ending abruptly.
Hi all! Sorry for the long hiatus from this thread. I'm still alive and kicking, and SineCraft isn't dead -- there's just nothing new to add. Stay tuned for SineCraft v12, which will be up soon after the 1.8 update is released.

Thanks for the constructive criticism, but I have no plans to change the designs of any blocks at this time. SineCraft was designed so that each block would be easy to identify at a distance, and in my opinion it serves that purpose admirably.
It's shoddy of me to just throw you a simple question like this, but do you have any plans for paintings? I'd imagine they'd fall within your strong suit!
Not shoddy at all! Unfortunately, I have no plans to do the artwork either. I was planning to do the mobs but I couldn't come up with any designs that were better than the originals. Until inspiration strikes me, I'm considering the pack finished (at least until 1.8 hits.)
Hey sine have you seen that jeb posted the 1.8 textures (btw he said it should be put on sept 8th)
And thats ok you have no plans for the aether. I was just wondering.
One agian i am sooo happy you have sorted out your problems and you are back to make this amazing pack
I didn't catch that. I'll see if I can dig them up. I'd rather wait until the actual update hits before I create anything new. I want to test any new textures in-game and such. And thank you!
I was just looking over the new food/experience png Mojang released. I'm not sure if it will be possible to keep the GUI SineCraft has now with the new system, it looks like they really changed the way status bars are done.
I wish the freaking update would drop already so I could get done with it :biggrin.gif:
Hi all. As the official 1.8 update has unexpectedly dropped this morning, I felt that it was prudent to make this statement. I'll be updating SineCraft as soon as possible, but this update couldn't have come at a busier time for me. I have a job interview today and about a million other things to get done. I'll start working on the update this evening if I can. Either way, you guys and gals should expect a release tomorrow or Friday.
Scratch that, it's up. I somehow found time to power through it :smile.gif:
v12 -- MAJOR UPDATE -- 7.28.2011
Minecraft Beta 1.8 is here, and a new SineCraft update has been created to match! In this update I have included textures and items for all of the new 1.8 additions. A few textures and items are still Minecraft 1.8 defaults because I don't have any good designs to replace them yet, but almost everything has been updated to match the SineCraft style. I have also included new GUI files to complement the new XP bar and bar locations (a SineCraft-style food bar is coming soon.) Textures are also included for the new chests :biggrin.gif:
With v12.1, I have added a SineCraft-style food bar. It's normally orange in color, and changes color appropriately when the player is under the influence of different status effects, such as poison.
EDIT: Here's a crop of the SineCraft v12.1 HUD. The health (red) and armor (blue) bars are on the left, the food bar (orange) is on the right, and the XP bar (green) is above the quickbar.

Curse PremiumThank you all! I'm glad you enjoy the pack!
I am not planning to add support for Yogbox. I have added limited support for the Aether, by including my own versions of their GUI.
Thanks for the constructive criticism, but I have no plans to change the designs of any blocks at this time. SineCraft was designed so that each block would be easy to identify at a distance, and in my opinion it serves that purpose admirably.
I have no plans to re-texture the Aether at this time. However, I have included support for the Aether's new GUI.
Thank you!
