It's good to see your pack keeps improving. A little hint: If you are looking for a good Roman font for your banners and images, give Trajan a try. I'm sure you will like it.
Oh, and while your texture pack is good, your Latin could use a little work :tongue.gif:
I'll give it a look, thanks! Also, my Latin is perfect, whatchoo talking about? :tongue.gif:

I love this, but Romans thought bows were for sissies. Maybe retexturing it to be a pilum? (Throwing spear) Also, you can make a font change to make all 'u's 'v's, like the romans did, and in all caps, and have numbers be Roman Numerals.

Wow! ROMECRAFT looks awesome! I'm working on an "antik pack" for my friends! And it's hard :X So many textures and so many possibilities... But for now, we will use this! O_O
Thanks! I'd love to see what you put in that pack, don't forget the Walls of Babylon and the Ancient Egypt packs! :smile.gif:
@WaffleWaffle - Thanks! It will only improve from here!
@Conells - Thanks a ton for your support, I too love Roman Architecture and culture, so replicating it was very fun and even educational! However it also makes me strive to perfect the style, so your suggestions will be very useful next time you come around. I am currently making patterned cloth to reenact Roman wall paintings.
UPDATE 1/30/2011
Sneak peak on my next update, patterned cloth! (To keep up with the Egyptian and Babylonian Ancient packs :tongue.gif:)
This new version of Romecraft features PATTERNED BLOCKS! and NEW MOBS!
3.5
-All non-nether Mobs are now retextured (either completely or just altered!) Pigs = Boars. Cows = Brown Cows. Squids = Big eyes and PINK! (Like real squids)
-PATTERNED DYED BLOCKS!
-Some edit to items. Diamonds are now in drawstring pouches. Gold tools are staffs/marching eagles/flags
-Foliage and Grass tweaked.
-Diamond block edited to match theme better
-Sandstone edited
-Gravel Edited
the sneak peak looks good, after the writing I'm going to try the new version! About the suggestions I mentioned I'm trying to be brief, so here they are:
Iron Door: Should be changed to a wooden door reinforced with iron, or an ornamental door (eg. used in roman temples). The actual model looks too modern.
Paintings: The brown frames of the paintings should be removed as it makes them look like an oil painting. Romans only used carpets, mosaics and wall paintings as indoor decoration so this would be important.
Furnace background: The background on the furnace screen looks a bit unprofessional counter to the other ones you made, so I would suggest you to change this. Maybe you could draw something like on the Crafting Table?
Stone Slab: Right now the only way to build a Roman column is to build it from Stone slabs, because Iron Block is priceless and raw stone looks too colorless. But if you build one, the side of the column looks fragmented where the Stone slab blocks connect to each other. Is there a way to "smooth" or remove these lines between the Stone Slab blocks? The top of the blocks are fine, I only suggest to redraw the sides.
Roman roads: There aren't any blocks that fits for making Roman roads. Cobblestone block is fine for houses or any kind of wall but as we all know it Romans used much larger stones to build their roads. Is there a way to make a block like this?
That's all for now, if I'll have something on my mind I write it, and possibly post some pictures too.
This was all incredibly useful Conells, no one else has posted useful criticism like this.
1. Iron Door: The Iron door is based off the bronze Senate doors in Rome, which had a similar design as to what is on my doors right now. I do not like my iron doors that much, and I never seem to use them, but I will definitely keep this in mind. Wooden doors with iron frames is a very attractive idea for me.
2. Paintings: Removing the painting trim is a good idea, I will do this for 3.51 fixes.
3. Furnace background: The furnace background was a feat in itself, but also kind of a defeat for me. I made it to an image in my head, but really I never got it to where I wanted it. Right now, I am thinking of making the furnace a drawn sketch, like the crafting table. Actually as I write this, that idea has settled. I think I'll change it to a sketch for the next update.
4. Stone Slab: The Stone slab has fought me since the beginning. I use my stone slabs for three uses: stairs, columns, and some roofs. I once tried to make the sides of these slabs look 'fluted' for use on columns, but they were very noisy and looked odd when used for anything else. I tried to smooth their edges, and they ended up looking very 2D and uninteresting. I tried to make them tile horizontally, then vertically, but always something looked off. I eventually gave up and designed it on the default, as I never minded the look of the default slabs, and left it that way. I just can't figure out a method to make this block look good for all its uses. I will give it another, hesitant, go.
5. Roman roads: This was tricky as I had to account for many different types of cobblestone used in Roman road building. Yes, they had stones that were large that made up many streets, but some were about the size of brick, and others were even smaller. Some resembled the dimensions of Roman brick, and others were reduced to gravel. My point is that the Romans seemed to have a great variety in roads, so I picked the middle-ground, based off a street in Rome, which is my current cobblestone.
Thanks a ton for these comments Conells, I got more out of this than hours of tweaking and deliberating by myself!
Fantastic, excellent job good sir. I'm absolutely loving this texture pack so far. I can't do much but praise it. I havn't gotten too far into it yet, as I've just got back into playing minecrat and have started a new world. At the moment all I really have is sand.... lots of it. Although I did play through escapecraft 2 (also fantastic btw for anyone looking for a good adventure map) and the texture pack looked quite nice there. I'm finding myself having some trouble putting my thoughts to word at the moment so basically i'm just going too list what I think could do with some improvment.
Animals - The boars and cows are awesome, but I feel they leave the sheep a little lackiong. Maybe you could give the sheep horns? ( rams) I don't actually know what the sheep of the area look like though, not exactly an expert on roman livestock haha. So if that wouldn't fit I guess ignore that. I just find it a little annoying that a lot of texture packs change the cows and pigs, but always leave the sheep untouched.
Armour - (This may actually be a problem on my end, or a choice by you) It seems none of the boots change the characters appearence like the helm, chestplate, and leggins do. They have a nice icon in inventory but don't actually change my feet.
Sandstone - maybe! I'm actually not sure on this yet, I cant decide if it looks fine or not, once I build something sizeable with it I may be able to decide. I definately like the texture of it, however I feel it might be just the slightest bit too dark/red. I'm not quite sure if I'm am even getting this across right, it really is so close. (and again I can't fully decide yet, annyone else care to comment on the sandstone?)
Grass - I think you're actually using the default grass right? That said I never liked the defauly lol. There is just something strange looking about it to my eyes. I've noticed some texture packs have it so that the sides of dirt blocks are also grassy if another grass block is under and next to it, making hills much more natural looking. If that can been done in a 16x16 I certainly recommend giving it a go. I've only seen it in 32x32 though, and I know little about texture packs, so maybe its not possible in 16x16?
Thats all I can think of for now, like I said I really am enjoying the pack.
Ohh Creepers! please if you ever change them: keep their face! I'm so dissapointed when texture packs take away that unique, adorable, fear inducing mouth and eyes.

Thanks very much for this post, I will answer all your questions as well as I can.
1.Animals - I was thinking of ways to change sheep, but I never could come up with a good idea. So I left them alone until later. To be noted also, the squids are actually backwards and have their eyes in the wrong place! I am fixing this in 3.6 which will be out today! (I'm so indecisive)
2. Armour - You are the first to say something about this. Yes, I left the texture out on purpose. Originally, I had designed shin guards, but discovered that they looked hideous and floated awkwardly away from the legs of your character. I decided the package would look far better without the foot armor textures, and left the icons as to be able to identify what you are wearing!
3.Sandstone - maybe! - I based this texture directly from Roman buildings and monuments in Tunisia. Sandstone is typically darker and redder than sand, since it is a processed material (not sure how it's made and too lazy to check, but I think this is why.)
4. Grass - You may note in my new pictures (coming soon) that my grass is exactly as you describe. The most common way to obtain this effect is through the Better Grass mod, and not by the terrain.png itself. If you want this look, download the Better Light / Better Grass mod. I highly recommend it if you like that look. :smile.gif:
5. Creepers - Believe it or not, they are slightly different and I actually modified their faces to be more obvious. I also made them more green, with no white streaks as per original.
Once again, thank you very much for commenting. All of this is very useful for development!

1 - Yeah I figured that was the problem with sheep, there just isn't much to change on them.
2 - It only dawned on my when reading your response that roman foorware was more often than not a sandal-like, and not shoe like wasn't it? so it would make sense to not have a shoe-like graphic. It's a shame shin guards didn't work out, that was a good idea.
3 - well you of course looked into it more than I did =P and I'd take your word for that.
4 - I'll have to check that mod out, I didn't realize it was a standalone mod, i thought it was always part of the packs
5 - Well glad to hear that, it had been so long since I have seen a default creeper that I thought they were. Glad that they have kept their face, although I'm sure not everyone cares as much as I do lol. Every since making a server with my one friend I have had sort of an obsesion with our creeper overlords.... ok ok, so I built a few (large) shrines in their honor, is that so wrong?

Personally I like the cobblestone you made and also agree with your decision. It's more a problem with the game itself (limited block types).

Sandstone is one of my favorite looking blocks, I think it's just fine. I know nothing about its historical references but do looks authentic.
I tried out the new update and now the columns look much better! The new furnace screen is also pleasing, but haven't tried the patterned cloths yet as there's nothing where they would fit.
I tried to attach the pictures but it says: "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached." It's a shame, I took pictures about roman building layouts, also the layout of Forum Romanum and the Roman wall types... :S
I have dozens of floor plans, building reconstructions, ancient art, and building material pictures in my Roman Texture Pack folder on my computer. I have researched a ton between making this pack and building Rome on my server, so don't feel too bad if you can't upload your pictures!
Also, I'm glad you like the columns. You deserve a for influencing me to try it again!
