Of all the texture packs available to me, yours is the one I like best. There's something about the colors and style of the brick and mossy cobblestone that makes me think of DOS games and Roman byways. This is a very comforting thing for myself at least. That said, I've begun to use your pack less and less, solely because of the obsidian texture. Natural obsidian is not very common, but in the course of survival or PvP you see it a lot. I've included some examples to show why the current texture is so bad:
A common technique in diamond mining is to use a water bucket to bypass lava. As you can see, from a small distance the Romecraft obsidian is pitch black under any light. On the other hand the Jolicraft texture looks nice, and represents obsidian adequately.
Structures are also often wholly or partially built of obsidian. Most commonly they are spawn traps, or fortresses in PvP. My poor excuse for a house isn't the best example though...
Originally I planned to go into more depth, but I think these pictures speak mostly for themselves. Whether you change this or not, I'm thankful for all you've done so far.
I am surprised you did not address Sandstone, which is used as a building material, not as a natural material. When I originally designed Romecraft, I had noted my use of obsidian purely as decorative, not as useful material. If I did use it, I would disguise it! I do like Jolicraft's version more in many ways, but in the current use, Romecraft uses obsidian as a black material, and I use it for such things as tiles. Of course, I could change black to solid black again, and replace obsidian with a more 'rocky' material, but for now, I will sit on this idea and decide on it later.
Do not think I am dismissing your opinion however, it is a STRONG point and I probably will change obsidian now that you have enlightened me! The main issue at hand though, is that I've been very inactive in Minecraft and in the texture pack, and that I will not be working extensively on this pack for another few weeks (school finals). When I return, I promise to create what you are looking for, perhaps in the main pack, or perhaps in an alternative pack.
Thank you, that is the best advice I've gotten so far. :smile.gif:
This is, without a doubt, the best texture pack I've used. I can't stand the high-def ones as they look ridiculous with the blocks, I can't stand the simplistic ones as they make the game even more surreal than it actually is; this is perfect. However, there's one thing I suggest: Obsidian change. When I build a nethergate/go online, the pitch-black obsidian just doesnt seem natural, it doesn't look that good. Is there any way to make it greyer/stonier? Maybe a black surface with grey gradients? I'd like to actually be able to see obsidian.
And is there any way to fix the texture pack to have the sides of grass to match the top? When the update first came out, I loved to see the landscape flow more naturally due to the erasing of the uniform grass-sides. I really missed that feature after I installed the texture pack.
EDIT: I was playing on Fast
Keep up the great work!
I... I.. I think i love you more than my own mother. This is excelent! Amazing! I cannot describe the feeling in my stomach, it feels like minecraft just became roman. Have you thought about things like skellies being germanic archers, or maybe zombies or zombie pig men being gualic berserkers?

What? Unnamed Craft? The greatest server ever? ppssshhhh.....
That server's epicness is to big to fit in this sig.
I really like this Texture pack however, i tend not to sue it for the simple fact that i dislike the coloured wool. I don't think its very realistic and makes it hard to make nice carpets and designs with the random colours that are added to some of the Dyed wool.
ROMECRAFT 4.3 ALTERNATIVE! For all you HATERS (I mean critics) who wanted new obsidian, new wood doors, and new lightstone! Obsidian still looks like obsidian, not like boulders like you wanted. The Emperor hath Spoketh.
ROMECRAFT 4.3 COLOR! The Emperor heard you did not like shiney objects, fancy designs, or anything truly Roman (You barbarian) so on top of the Alternative pack, he has provided solid color blocks in place of the fancy color blocks for those of you with an itch to make giant monuments to the Plumbing God Mario.
The download doesn't seem to be working for the color version. Can you update the download?
But overall, I'll have to say that this is a great texture pack. Unlike others, it actually has a common theme.
Well done, Stugace!
The black wool is changed even in the original pack. I loved the old black wool and since it is the original pack, could you please use the old black wool? (The one with the black border with a white center.)

I've messed up all these packs I believe. I apologize for my incompetence.

After reading the descriptions of the texturepacks and some of the (rather rude) comments on the thread, I've made some minor edits to the terrain files so they are what I think Stugace was going for.
What did I do?
Put the black tile texture back with the original and the black wool texture with the colour - Switched the redstone to be like redstone pipes (I think this is what Stugace was after, right?) - Added in the textures for wildgrass compatability - Other edits that don't effect gameplay, unused textures to "Extras" file, switched background (I hate the light pink with purple lines, it's annoying to work with), messed with logo.
What I didn't do
Switch the sandstone texture the peanut gallery is griping about. It takes a more artistic hand than mine, and I like the original texture fine for building purposes anyway.

How's that country song go? "Old enough to know better, but still too young to care."

So I put back the 4.1.
I'm on a Mac so is this why 4.3 doesn't work?
Thanks :smile.gif:
And, by the way, are the Zombie Pigs supposed to look like Borgs from Star Trek?
I find the similarities surprising.
Yeehaw.
For all you original fans, this contains the old doors, the old obsidian, and the old building-block Sandstone!

Does that look natural to you? Sandstone should be the same color as sand is, not darker.
Hmm, seems I made a goof. That is actually hand drawn but seems to have not properly blended all the layers.

Since I apparently destroyed my pack 3 times in a row, I will be fixing these 'new' versions to proper levels.
Also, I am finally motivated enough to start the HD pack, which will possibly fail horrendously, but appears to be coming along OK for now.
