Honestly, before you updated to 1.8, I only used this pack. Because it didn't change such core aspects such as mobs, GUIs, and tools. Now the textures for the latter two are horrible.
Fantasy is boring. It's all about a hero killing dragons or rescuing princesses. And in the end, the hero gets a big reward from some autocratic ruler, and spends the rest of his life banging said princess.
Certainly in the past these may have been difficult tasks, but today the nobility is all but abolished, and while the bad guy's magical armor may be said to able to withstand a blow from any weapon known to man, the fact is that when the mystical warlock wrought the armor from steel and fairy dust, man didn't know about C4. Boom. Dead.
Moderncraft is for people who can't take the fantasy aspect of Minecraft. It replaces many of the fantastical elements of Minecraft and replaces them with normal things that exist today. Other, more timeless things, like brick and stone, remain roughly the same.
Let's take a look:
Cobblestone? What is this, 18th century England? Who uses cobblestone for serious purposes anymore? Cobblestone has been changed to Cinderblock.
Redstone? What, you mean like rubies? Rubies don't carry a current, man. Redstone has been changed to Copper. Copper wires carry electricity. It's that simple, really.
Netherrack? What does that even mean? No one knows. Netherrack is now some kind of Red Marble. It looks nice as trim, I think.
Soul Sand: what the hell does that even mean anyway? Why do souls slow me down? Is it their spiritual baggage or something? The weight of my sins? I don't follow it. Soul Sand is now Cautionblock. Cautionblock makes you more cautious, so you slow down.
Glowstone? What kind of stone glows? It's like something out of that film about the naked blue people. Honestly. Glowstone has been changed to Fluorescents.
Wooden Ladders? And I suppose you want me to cross one of those rope-and-plank bridges that could be brought down by an overweight bumble bee, too? Wooden Ladders have been replaced by Steel Ladders.
Torches? What am I, a caveman? Ordinarily I'd suggest the more practical fluorescents, but if you need lighting in a pinch, here are Lightbulbs on Poles:
Wooden Doors? How am I supposed to find out what's outside if there's wood in my face? Wooden Doors are now Glass Doors.
Minecart Tracks? With wooden ties? This is 2010, man. You can't build with wooden ties now. Minecart track ties are now made of concrete.
Bonus: Good looking diagonals now possible. (Will be optional for people who want the tracks to curve nicely.)
Chests? Who still has big hulking chests lying around? They're expensive and difficult to transport. Why not just swipe some big old unused cardboard boxes from a southbound freight and dump things in them instead?
