I was wondering if there was a way to modify just a few blocks in the default Minecraft texture pack, but keep the rest of them. I've started playing Beta and I hate how cobblestone and glass look, so I want to modify them to something more aesthetically pleasing. Is there some way for me to dig into the files and find the default textures? Alternatively, is there a downloadable texture pack that mirrors the default, which I could easily modify certain tiles of?
Ya you can edit by going in to the minecraft.jar folder.
To get there
1. open run
2. type in %appdata%
3. hit .minecraft
4. hit bin
5. open minecraft folder
If you cant open it then you need winrar.
6. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will see texture.png
7. Drag that on to your desktop
8. Download paint.net
9. Open the texture.png with paint.net
10. Change what you want to change.
11. Save
12. Now put the texture.png back in to the minecraft folder
13. When it says overide say yes.
14. Open mincraft and enjoy.
1. open run
2. type in %appdata%
3. hit .minecraft
4. hit bin
5. open minecraft.jar with WinRAR or 7-zip
6. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and you will see terrain.png
7. Drag that on to your desktop
8. Download paint.net
9. Open the terrain.png with paint.net
10. Change what you want to change.
11. Save
12. Now put the terrain.png back in to the minecraft folder
13. When it says overide say yes.
14. Open mincraft and enjoy.[/quote]
Well thank you for pointing those out.
Either way helped the guy out.
Sorry if this is a necro post, not sure how many days it takes to make one. How does one go about doing the same process on a mac? I just need the default texture.png. If someone wanted to post it for me to download that would be awesome.

SHFT-CMD-G ( Go to folder ) Paste in this
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/bin/
.
Select minecraft.jar
Right click - Choose Open With Archive Utility = minecraft ( folder )
Open minecraft ( folder )
Find terrain.png - Edit this file, Other files for other textures are also in this folder or it's subfolders.
Okay, sorry for the really noobish questions. I am a talented graphic designer, but no nothing about programming/root files/etc. Now after I have modified the default terrain, is there a way to install it like the other texture packs and access it in the main menu? Or must I overwrite the default in the minecraft.jar?

Put it in a folder with any other files you have modified. You could include files like pack.txt ( a short description on the first line will appear in the texture pack selector ) or pack.png ( a preview icon that appears in the texture pack selector. Or other texture files such as gui/items.png.
Select all the items in the folder ( if all you have is terrain.png add an empty folder to this folder and select the both items [ this step may be unnecessary, can't confirm right now if a zip of only one file will work properly] )
Right Click - Choose Compress ### items. = archive.zip
rename archive.zip to myAwesomeTexturePack.zip
Move myAwesomeTexturePack.zip to the texturepacks folder
select myAwesomeTexturePack.zip in minecraft.
Enjoy playing minecraft with your new textures
I followed your steps exactly, and can even see my pack in the menu, but It doesn't seem to work. I highlight it and click open texture pack folder, but when I open the game, everything is the same.
EDIT: I fixed it. I had forgotten to rename my png back to terrain.png before zipping it. Thanks for your help.
