Texture Packs do not have any affect on the game performance and it will not reduce lag, but I do like the concept behind it The tree has some ugly green colors in it which I know can be edited out with a different shade of brown.

Yes. The difference would be unnoticeable, unless you're using a stone age computer...

Yes. The difference would be unnoticeable, unless you're using a stone age computer...

while the color content of textures certainly wouldn't make a difference performance-wise pack to pack, you're either being ignorant or intentionally misleading people if you're telling them that texture packs make no difference on computer usage. because minecraft loads each surface of a block with an individual texture for each block within a chunk that is within loaded range bottom to top, you're looking at tens of thousands of textures being rendered. a 128x128 or 256x256 pack is going to take much more memory and processor dedication than a 16x16 pack.
unless i have severely misunderstood the way the game is programmed, what you're saying makes no mathematical sense

Technically a higher resolution pack would work a bit slower, but the difference can barely be noticed on most computers... changing to a 8x8 px pack lets say would not magically make your fps go up. Not to mention that this pack is 16x16 and just changes the colors which will not affect performance in any way.

I have a high-end computer, and I do notice a difference between a 128x128 and 32x32 pack. Not so much that 128x128 is unplayable, but enough so that the drop in fps is slightly annoying.

When creating a texture pack for Minecraft you have to stick with the same size Notch uses or else the image you placed will not fit over the object in game causing un-wanted effects (Overlapping and such). Lilyo is right, even if you added a 512*512 image the speed will be the same, you are placing a simple image, you are not placing a renderable model, mod, etc, etc, etc. Therefore since you are changing a image the speed will remain the same, and since you are saving the image into the same formate used within the game.
If we were talking about a model, or a mod then thats another story; since some mods change the texture size that appears ingame. Which would count as a mod and not a texture pack. This is a texture pack.
EDIT: Also I noticed what you are confused about. When he is talking about an 8-bit texture pack he is referring to the look of an 8-bit rendered image, in no way he is changing the specs of the image, he may edit the image to make it appear like an 8-bit image, but he is not changing how your computer with render his texture pack. What you were saying you would be right, but you and Lilyo are talking about two different things. This texture pack is nothing more then a image that takes the appearance of an 8-bit image, it will not help the speed of your game what so ever. If you want your game to run faster, upgrade your computer or lower the graphic settings.

Nice texture pack, you did a good job on it. I like the idea and concept. It reminds me of classic old school games from the Super NES and such. :smile.gif:
Just to mention, if you truly want to go for an 8-bit feel (which is, sadly, impossible in minecraft due to shading)
each tile should only be 4 colors

when I made this texture pack, I took the original and reduced the colour bit to 8
*-bit means 8 red X8 green X8 blue
so any combination of those 8 shades of red with those 8 shades of blue with those 8 shades of green, thus 8-bit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_color_palettes

1 - lag and frame rate are DIFFERENT. Stop misusing the term. The other day I read around here in the forums "lag in single player" and my brain popped out.
2 - NES is NOT the only 8-bit videogame, so it's quite unfair using it as a only model.
3 - NES has a 52 color palette, and let's use for a counterpart, the Master System has 64. Limits of 4 colours have almost always been disposed of by engineering trickery, etc - Let's say common sense and 16 colors are the top limits. (There are other 8-bit consoles but these two are the most proeminent of their age.)
4 - As king_llama just stated, he made a texture pack based on the VGA 8-bit palette. Actually this is made to LOOK SOMEWHAT LIKE 8-bit consoles, but not as a full homage. I think separate palettes should be used for this (I have some colour nostalgia more from the MS than the NES, personally. Most people would go for the NES, though.) So, basically, don't be so picky. I found that texture pack to be pretty nice, since I played a lot of old'n'good DOS games based on that color system.
By the way, as of the NES, a tip: The first two rows are for sprites, the last two are for backgrounds. So for a NES experience, only use the last two for blocks and only the first two for the characters (That was a Captain Obvious cameo)

I know from experience that larger terrain.png files (512x512, 1024x1024, etc...) make the game slower
Many people who use higher resolution texture packs ALSO have this same problem,
so trust me, I know for a fact that larger terrain images make the game run slower
Explain to me how Aageon's Bumpmaft runs extremely slow on my computer and yet the default doesn't
