If I open a texture pack in paint, edit it and save it, will the white area still be transparent?
No. You will need to use a program that doesn't fill the background with a color. Like GIMP, I use it because it's free and also works for this too. Paint always fills the background with white so you won't be able to have any transparency. If you have any other image editing software on your computer, you should try them too.
