Introducing The Cel-Pak, my rather popular custom texture pack. Now to keep up with the release of Minecraft Beta 1.3, I'm releasing version 2.01!
(this image currently out-of-date - missing the updates for v.2.05)
I was inspired to make it specifically because I wanted a texture that worked really well for pixel art. Particularly, something that had a good green block. Trees always have a lot of transparency in them in just about every texture out there, so I decided I'd make my own with its own tree texture. In the process, I decided to go ahead and alter the rest. It's not 100% original work - items, painting designs, and armor are mostly just slightly edited versions of models I obtained from other texture packs (credited and thanked in the included readme). But then, the main point of this pack isn't those items anyways - it's the terrain.
So, enjoy. =)
UPDATE HISTORY:
31DEC2010 - v1.1:
· Updated a number of the items, gave weapons/tools a uniform appearance
· Redid all of the armor slightly
· Changed ALL of the "art" images to reflect a "cel-shaded videogame" theme
· Reworked many of the aggressive mobs to reflect TCP theme
· Touched up parts of the terrain file
10JAN2011 - v1.15:
· Updated some of the items yet again (rotated shovels to better appear like digging, gave armor a "shadow", redid some of the colors)
· Smoothed out grass and snow side textures some
· Increased color contrast between stone and cobblestone
· Slightly redesigned GUI
· Brightened some colors, including grass, flowers, diamond hoes and swords, among others
13JAN2011 - v1.2:
· Now includes all Minecraft Beta 1.2 textures, items, and mobs!
22JAN2011 - v2.0:
· Updated with custom graphics for Beta 1.2 items!
· Shading update for all terrain
· Updated GUI
· Tweaked a few colors
22FEB2011 - v2.01
· Updated with custom graphics for Beta 1.3 items
· Reworked color palette for ore blocks to better match stone blocks
19APR2011 - v2.05
· Updated with customized graphics for Beta 1.4 and 1.5 items
· Custom wolf mobs!
· Slightly reworked colors on a couple textures
Version 1.XX is still being supported, however! Just in case shaded isn't your cup of tea, I'm still updating the classic Cel-Pak whenever Minecraft is updated, so you'll still be able to use the original! (currently outdated. update coming!)
Thanks everybody. Yeah, I wanted it to work for pixel art, but I didn't want to sacrifice anything else with that. Definitely aimed for overall clean look, so I'm glad you think I achieved that. =)
Today, I've been working on doing my 32x32 upgrade on it. It's a far cry from just an upscale, though. I'm adding a lot of small gradients and smoothing out corners. At present, the terrain is complete, and I'm currently working on the items.
I'm not so pleased with the "CelPak Smooth". Right now, the biggest issue I've run into is that, evidently, something doesn't translate correctly from 16x16 to 32x32 textures. My pumpkins become a quarter lava, my Netherstone becomes running water, and my solid gold blocks become a quarter fire.
Other than those issues, it seems the rest works well. Still not certain if I like it, but at least the rest WORKS decently.
I think I'm going to stick with simpler work, though, unless someone can explain a relatively easy fix to this problem.
I've completely abandoned the 32x32 version. Now I'm working on tweaking out a v1.1 of the Cel-Pak, and I'm creating a Cel-Pak: Tron Edition. I'm VERY pleased with the Tron Edition pack. I still have to edit the mobs and armor, but it's coming out really nice.
Also, now celebrating 100 downloads of the Cel-Pak! Thank you everybody for your interest.
The Cel-Pak has now been downloaded over 600 times! I never would have expected it'd have become this popular. Thank you everybody for your interest! I'm planning on doing an update tomorrow or Friday with new mobs and some reworked items.
TCP has now been updated to version 1.1. Update includes the following changes:
· Updated a number of the items, gave weapons/tools a uniform appearance
· Redid all of the armor slightly
· Changed ALL of the "art" images to reflect a "cel-shaded videogame" theme
· Reworked many of the aggressive mobs to reflect TCP theme
· Touched up parts of the terrain file
This is epic on so many levels-- but please allow an option to keep the old paintings rather than your new ones. I haven't tried them yet, so I don't know which I'd prefer-- and I'm hoping Notch will fix the paintings bug pretty soon-- but that said, from what I've seen of Notch's paintings, they're kind of cool, and I'd like to have the option to switch without forfeiting the awesome cel-shaded texture you've created.
Oh, also I second the comment about differentiating between cobblestone and regular stone. It looks alright, but practically speaking, it makes a big difference, especially if I'm worrying about how other people are seeing it. Also, it would be nice to know when I'm about to hit a dungeon.
They are differentiated, actually, but not very much. I tend to forget that my monitors are extra bright with contrast turned up a lot because my computer room is particularly bright, so something that's discernible on my monitors isn't necessarily as discernible on someone else's.
I'll fix that problem on my next edit. I'm not going to be doing it anytime SOON because it's a hassle with MCWB getting new edits back up and running, but if I get around to doing some other edits besides just that, I'll put it all together.
Essentially, I'm only going to release updates that are big enough to up the version number to 1.15 or 1.2. If it's only an edit that would warrant changing the version to 1.11, it's not big enough. Ya know?
Anyhow, that's enough rambling. As for the art, as far as I know, I can't make it optional unless I upload two separate versions of the pack. What YOU can do yourself, however, is very simple. If you go into the .ZIP and go to the "art" folder, rename the file in there to kz.orig.png instead of kz.png. When you save it and reload it in Minecraft, it'll have Notch's original artwork again. If you change the filename back to kz.png, it'll once again use my artwork.
I'd just like to point out that what I love the most about this is how it actually improves gameplay. Yes, you replaced some ugly textures with some sweet ones-- but you also did things like make glass actually look clear instead of gross. And the doors are things you can actually see out of without pressing shift and squinting, since you made the upper half a viable window. Everything is much cleaner, neater, usable. Well done, again.
Yeah, I'm not releasing another version with the different art because if someone wants it without the art, they can just remove the art file. Best solution, if you want both as an option, is to make a copy of the downloaded file, rename one (maybe Cel-Pak Orig-Art.zip) and delete the included kz.png. That'll cause the game to load the kz.png that's inside minecraft.jar.
I WILL do a midway release on here of partial version updates, though - it just won't be those that make their way onto MCWB, I've decided. I've got a partial update coming up in an hour or so, and it'll include your suggestion about the stone/cobblestone fix.
Alright! It took me a little bit longer than anticipated to do my updates and get it uploaded, but here it is! The new updated version is available. Version 1.15 is here now. Check it out! Update details in the original post.
I thinned them out. They're still in the game, but there are fewer of them. I never cared for clouds much, they get really annoying when I'm building tall buildings. That's another thing that you can easily revert on your own. In the texture pack file, go into the terrain directory, then delete the clouds.png and the game will use the default that's contained in minecraft.jar.
Really, it works the same way for ANYTHING that you might like better in the default. Find it in the texture pack and delete it/rename it.

EDIT*
Wow! It is BEAUTIFUL! The only thing I recommend changing is the cobblestone not looking so alike to regular stone.
Thanks!

Hope y'all like! I'm pretty pleased, personally.
Great job.

But it's whatever.

And again, really - thanks for the support. =)
Edit: Actually, I see clouds in the screenshot you provided, but I don't think I've actually seen any clouds while I've been playing.
