I'm working on a Steam/Sail Ship , it'll be done today :biggrin.gif:
I'm naming it the "S.S Glimmar" after you.
Sorry to hear about the family troubles, mate! Look forward to seeing the 'S.S.Glimmar'. You guys are very kind to an old man. I've now got an airship, a port building and a ship named after me...makes me feel like 'Rockefeller'.
Many thanks, Reaper I am truly honoured. Hope to see some of my little paddle boats bobbing around it too! Lol! :biggrin.gif:
uv mapping is done! i know its ugly, but i used the flat colors to clearly see which side is what in the texture:
heres the texture:
and the parts labeled on the texture:
hook a brother up so I can roll it out to the masses =)
edit: needs a proper inventory icon as well, anyone up to the task? I can handle code and 3d modelling, but im no pixel artist =(
MuadDib: I thought it necessary to quote the entire amount, pictures and all for reference, as herewith my first attempt at a small 64x64 skin for the animated paddle steamer boat:
From your plan and pics above I was able to place everything accurately except the sides, front and back of the boiler block, as they were hidden from view. Ideally I usually to and fro between editing and looking at the object in the round, to see where to make it more believable, so hope this is a start and any changes can easily be rectified.
Notice I've cutaway bits that don't get used by minecraft, see my original boat skin here:
...and I've also cut into the paddlewheel canopy, as I thought it would be a shame not to see those paddles moving inside. Hope that works! Also your block and my axle at the bottom may not correspond, as you wouldn't have had reference to my skin, nor I to your boiler block. Again, I can easily make adjustments if necessary. Would it be possible to have the bottom part of the paddlewheel canopy transparent, so that any divers looking up will see the paddles all the way round, rather than (I assume) disappearing into a closed box.
Apologies now if I've made any stupid mistakes in the rush to get something back to you. Hope it looks ok and I look forward to seeing it in action, when you get a chance, mate. :smile.gif:
ps. I'll carry on with a HD version for Glimmar's Steampunk 32x32 pack, assuming it won't be a problem upscaled.

hmmm..hd version...ill have to remap everything. lets decide on what res to use so I only have to do this once =)
ok to double it up to 128x128?
youtube vid uploading as we speak with the textures you provided. regardless if mistakes were made, it still looks like a proper steamer. the holes you made for the paddle canopies are perfect, you can clearly see those paddles doing their thing. its quite breathtaking, considering the cubic nature of minecraft =)
if you can stomach working with beta minecraft, i can pm you the necessary classes so you can debug your skin at home before going too far ahead. or do you want to wait for the 128x128 version?
1) this is experimental code at best. use at own risk =)
2) minecraft beta 1.1_02 ONLY
3) locate your minecraft.jar file, make a backup of it
4) insert the .class files to minecraft.jar (ONLY the class files)
5) delete META-INF folder if you see it in minecraft.jar
6) boat.png is the boat texture (glimmars version), this goes inside the items/ folder in jar file
7) boat_test.png is the test texture with the color coded sides so you can mod it your self.
THIS MOD IS NOT THE FINAL PRODUCT. DO NOT ASK FOR HELP, IT WILL BE IGNORED. a proper release will come soon in the modding forum, until then, use this to preview, tweak textures, have fun.
load minecraft, spawn a few boats, enjoy =) this replaces the ingame boat. i will be writing this mod to add the steamboat as a new item. for now, im using the core boat until we get it all worked out.
glimmar: the axle on the bottom texture looks like its in the proper spot. i think i can go one further and add a proper rotating axle to go with the paddles, see it spinning inside the boat as if the boiler was doing its thing =)

50 mins to go for youtube cilp as of last edit
Sorry about the remapping, I had just assumed that, like the standard vehicles in the item folder it was just possible to double the size, but I hadn't considered with working bits attached that would impact on things. 128x128 would be perfect as that's what I did with your template to fit my new boat skin over, so I wouldn't need to change anything I've done so far.
Oh, I'm glad the wheel canopy thing worked, and glad there aren't any major mistakes in my attempts. I'm really looking forward to seeing the video! I'll swap over to showing that one at the top of the thread as soon as I get my hands on it. So excited!! Talk about being a kid again with a new train set.:Notch:
It's only the WildGrass mod I'm waiting for to work properly with beta and the BetterLight mod, so I'll have a go tonight at upgrading. I should have done it earlier, as I have my 1.2.6 version all backed up anyway. As regards the classes, do I need to use modloader or anything, or do I just drop them into the minecraft.jar? Bearing in mind you're speaking to a complete novice here, when it comes to using anything but zau's MCPatcher and MrMessiah's BetterLight, etc. Lol! :smile.gif:
If you've still got enthusiasm to carry on MuadDib, I'd be happy to texture all sorts of machinary, if I can get my head around the shapes. This theme would have reached the Promised Land in that respect!

Howdy again Folks
Let me just look through the thread and se....GOOD LORD
I THINK YOU CHAPS HAVE DIVIDED BY ZERO!
Seriously , youve broken all the rules and moved into mount olympus. Id give you a diamond , but I think the whole bloody kimberly mine would compensate you for the work you are doing here
Keep it up!
PS: @Glimmar. In regards to your earlier comment on the positioning of cylinders on Steam locomotives , most european engines had their cylinders in the indside. British trains made before 1914 almost always kept them between the front bogie in order to fit the machine inside the loading guage.
Howdy, sirscott. Glad you're liking all the new and planned things. I should have remembered your expertise on all things steam engine related...so very glad you're aboard our madcap engine of ideas and gadgets again.
I take it you are as excitied about MuadDib's modding magic as the rest of us! Any engine animation should make an enormous difference to the look of this texture pack. With a properly chimnied smoking minecart train, and the possibility of some moving parts, it turns Minecraft into a fully working trainset. 'Traincraft' anyone? Just remember I said it first! :biggrin.gif:
reread my last post, glimmar, there was some more info i added
no modloader required. insert classes, put texture in proper folder, load mc. backup your beta copy first before doing anything tho
and yes, the powered minecart is next on the list. Im positive ill have something working by tomorrow night, providing i dont get distracted by Real Life(tm).
EDIT: <facepalm> D0h! </facepalm> ...i think you can already do a 128x128...the way to code is structured, it should take a bigger image without any modifications. try it with the mod and see what you get. Just keep in mind that the image dimensions *must* be a power of 2....this is the nature of video cards, textures must always have power of 2 dimenions. so you could do 64x64, 32x32, 512x512, 1024x1024. it must be square as well for the boat mod
I hate to end this awesomeness with some criticism, but it is constructive.
When attempting to exit the boat, I get stuck, similar to when you jump onto a fence post and get stuck. Also, no smoke from chimney and no splash from the paddles. Not sure if either of those are possible?
Now for more kudos...the paddle moves and can be seen from under water...totally spectacular.

im not sure how to fix those. ive never experienced getting stuck on something (except for the occasional sapling assploding in my face). and the smoke is just a random function, it should at least occasionaly do something . the bubbles are part of the original boat code, so you have to get the boat up to speed before they start showing up.
I can only guess you have other mods in play, or i do..i use xua's mcpatcher for the hd texture pack, zombe's fly/builder mods, extended reach..and the modified boat classes
make sure the classes I changed dont clash with something you have installed. this mod modifies da/dw (boat model/renderer), kp and nr (model renderer and texturedquad, for handling custom size textures for vehicles/creature models)

Golden rule: Never walk away from the computer for even a moment, especially after just posting. Which is what I did. Lol! I'm stuck with entertaining at the moment, haha! So totally jealous of PipeHead! (not really mate!). Just glad it's near to working. :biggrin.gif:
I'd originally thought I'd just double the image size, but then with your last post and suddenly thinking things might be different with a mod, it threw me. When I can, I'll get onto the 128x128 version and see how that looks, but I'm stuck for now. :sad.gif:
Just seen the vid! AWESOME! Reeeally looking forward to working on the higher res version! Yippee!!
[edit] From looking at the vid alone, I think I need to change the colour of the paddle wheel housing to better contrast with the wheel. It needs a little less white and a bit more grunge, but I should be able to do better with the higher res skin and when I get a chance to play with it myself! :smile.gif: We should have a range of coloured boats eventually. Oh no more work!!
Yo, just poppin in to say that "Steamer-Paddle-Boat" has been added to OSMS, with a link to the post that contains the download. The download at OSMS also includes Glimmar's skin for said boat.
@MaudDib, I run almost NO mods. MrM's with Better Light, Better Grass, SMChat and SimpleMap and of course Xau's HD Patcher. I was on my slow ass laptop since my kids have my main PC tied up with watching YouTube vids. So when I get back on my main PC, I'll see if things work better.
@Glimmar, I didn't know you were working on a 128x128 TP! OMG, that will take this TP to the next level! My son used to use Bumpmaft TP...although now after seeing the magnificence of Glimmar Steampunk TP he has switched. Anywho, the Bumpmaft TP(i hope I am spelling that correctly) was very cool because it was 128x128 and I used to use Minecraft Enhanced TP which is 128x128 also.

MuadDib, no, you've mis-interpreted, sorry. :sad.gif:
The 128x128 reference was to the size of the boat.png file, which for 16x16 texture packs is 64x64 pixels and for 32x32 textures packs is 64x128 pixels, but for the new paddle steamer mod the boat.png file needs to be 128x128 to give extra space for the boiler, smoke stack and paddle wheel texture shapes.
Really sorry to disappoint you and anyone else. I'm struggling with a 32x32 pack, let alone a 128x128 texture pack. Lol! I'm breaking out in a cold sweat just thinking about that task! No, that task is for younger, faster, leaner guys than me. Lol! Three kids, and assorted animals is too demanding, how the heck you survive with five and create a minecraft empire beats me! Kudos, to you sir. I feel like this guy ---->
I wish I had the energy and time for it though. [sigh]

Oh! Excellent! Many thanks, Creeper. Folks definately need to see MuadDib's genius and your OSMS is excellent too!
My progress on the S.S Glimmar ; I'm attempting 3 varients : The first, a regular sail boat, the second, a paddleboat (Heheheh), and lastly, a steam powered boat.
This thing eats wood up fast, that's why it takes so long, I've been raping my treefarm for resources : still not enough,.
i shoulda made my release a little less public. this is not the final product.
