Triskelli and PipeHead would be full of ideas for this I'm sure.
I've got a few:
It'd be a good idea to make the airship distinct from the boat a fair bit.
Arrgh! There was a beautiful picture of several vertical boiler airships (Actually, they were flying vertical boilers) somewhere on the internet, but I can't seem to find 'em: Here's a few bits of inspiration, though:
The trick is that we need a small, slow, personal craft, a steam-launch of the skies as it were. If you have anything in mind, Glimmar, feel free to make another sketch.
*shakes fists at glimmar and triskelli* CURSE YOU!
ok fine ill make a mole machine then. *grumbles at all you greedy bastages*
just kidding =)
glimmar: im trying to think how the hell im gonna pull off a piston/crank assembly....the current box system is very limited on range of motions. it was a miracle i got the spinning paddles going. if you feel you want to see more detail on that steam boat, be my guest. just keep in mind 1 thing:
1) more shapes = more space needed for textures. the bottom floor of the boat is what takes the most space on that 64x32 image. remember, open and flatten a box and you end up with a large surface area. same applies in the textures. and i have no control over surfaces that are not seen...all sides have to be accounted for in the texture image. already looking at a 64x64 and i have to retool all the existing boxes for the new dimensions
theres an entrance outside the building, next to the door into the bottom floor of my building. enter it and take the stairway to hell =) lots of diamond tools and ore to play with in the chests if your into that thing. lots of pork in the back of the storage room. enjoy =)
edit: digging through the rendering system for mobs/vehicles, I see why all these *always* use a 64x32 texture...the renderer scales the texture coordinates to fit a texture of this size, and no other...so if i switch to a 64x64 texture, it scales them on the boat, breaking the current mapping....sigh. id have to add a lot of **** to make this work with custom sizes. it will be done though goddammit...this boat is too frickin cool not to have everything nice n shiny on it.
Well, I host and run a private server just for myself and family and BoneHead has been on to do builds as you all know. And now Gestankfaust is on my original world making vids of my builds. So until someone forks up some cash or has a better idea, I'd be willing to run the server for now.
It usually up and has a twice a day reboot schedule and a twice a day backup schedule, all offset by 6 hours from each other. The current primary world(the one running on default port 25565) is a 9000x9000 block world, the one you saw in my castle video. It was prerendered using the SMP version of the Biome Terrain mod and then the Borderlands plugin was used to set an invisible border that no one can cross to stop explorer griefing. It has absolutely NO oceans...it's all land by design...but it's simply to create a new world.
Current Plugins
Craftbook
Worldedit
Worldguard
Cuboid
MinecartMania
BorderLands
I can safely dedicate 1 core of my 3.0Ghz quad core cpu and 2GB or 4GB of my 8GB of memory...so that should safely be able to handle 10 or 15 players at a time I would think.
I can help if we prefer to buy a server, but I can't pay for it all. If buying is preferred, does anyone know which provider is the best?
glimmar: im trying to think how the hell im gonna pull off a piston/crank assembly....the current box system is very limited on range of motions.
I'm sure just a reciprocal motion would be enough (In and out). Heck, even unmoving pistons would be a fantastic improvement! All we punks need to see is the smokestack, and we can fill in the other details. Oh, and more pictures! Esoteric engines for everyone!
Personally though, I think a vertical boiler design would be much easier to mod for, due to compactness of area.
*EDIT*
Sorry, found this quote while looking up these images: It's an excerpt from a news article describing the first trip of the "Best Friend of Charleston", and it's too good to pass up.
"The one hundred and forty-one persons flew on the wings of wind at the speed of fifteen to twenty-five miles per hour, annihilating time and space...leaving all the world behind. On the return we reached Sans-Souci in quick and double quick time, stopped to take up a recruiting party-darted forth like a live rocket, scattering sparks and flames on either side-passed over three salt creeks hop, step and jump, and landed us all safe at the Lines before any of us had time to determine whether or not it was prudent to be scared."
First - Glimmar, what do you Pipe, and the rest, think of using Pink Floyd's "The Machine" as the song for the video I'm doin for your pack using Pipe's and other worlds? (just popped into my head as I was roaming around.
Second - This is also kinda twofold...I made the video for my pack, but wanted to show you all what kinda video to expect with PF's "The Machine". (I get into the music and video mixing :tongue.gif:) Not usually into promoting my stuff. Just modest most of the time. And I'm not trying to promote anything but what to look forward to....if any of that makes sense.
The music here is intended for the kind of video footage I had. The footage from Pipe's place made me feel like I was in a Pink Floyd world

im sure that we would be fine without aa purchased server or now unless someone is nice enough to donate one....... but you should have somesort of rigurous test to keep out the greifers lol
uv mapping is done! i know its ugly, but i used the flat colors to clearly see which side is what in the texture:
heres the texture:
and the parts labeled on the texture:
hook a brother up so I can roll it out to the masses =)
edit: needs a proper inventory icon as well, anyone up to the task? I can handle code and 3d modelling, but im no pixel artist =(
Just sputtering over my breakfast again! I'll work on it this weekend, time allowing, MuadDib! You have done an amazing job getting this out so quick! Plenty to go on for visual trickery too. I'll attempt a 16x16 and 32x32, assuming there are no problems in scaling up. :smile.gif:
Also don't worry too much about the mechanics of the minecart piston arrangement. Movement of any kind would be a fantastic bonus and just having a smoking chimney stack is out of this world for atmosphere and effect!
Loving all the train pics and plenty of evidence there to show that many steam trains didn't have their pistons showing on the side anyway.
Also loving the idea of a steampunk server, but I have absolutely no skills other than visual artistry in that direction(and most would question that! :biggrin.gif:).
I think most of you good folks are on the other side of the Atlantic, as I usually wake up to such a packed thread here. Either that or everyone waits until I've gone and then you all pop up, "Has he gone? Quick, you guys, he's gone lets have a party! YAY!!" When I wake up, I just get to see the evidence!

Brilliant video editing skills on show there, Gestankfaust and great textures. I also love Pink Floyd (heck I'm almost from that generation!), but I would be a little concerned over the copyright aspect of using that particular song, as amazingly appropriate as it would be. I'd prefer it if the Vernian Process music was used for it's association with Glimmar's Steampunk, but that's just my personal preference. The video is yours and PipeHead's though, so don't let me influence you over what direction you take it in.
@ ditto101: Now that's something new, Steampunk tree house! Really like what you've done there, mate!
Here's a little surprise for the weekend, before they're made redundant by MuadDib's awesome 'working' versions.
Update's always take a long time to do, as they are so fiddly to make sure everything is in all the right boxes, etc. So for all you folks who regurlarly contribute and peruse these hallowed halls of Steampunkery, I present you a little gift to play with. These might be out of date soon! So play with them while I work on converting MuadDib's animated boat template! Different colours and versions may come later if time allows.

Retired StaffAwesome...more video footage!!
(still digesting Pipe's awesomeness...oh...my...god)
As usual...you rule MauDib!
Working on the intro video now. Don't want to get too far ahead only to have an update or two and have to start over
:biggrin.gif:

I second the motion. Especially if this blossoms into a mod.
I can't wait for the modding API, I just might dabble in it myself.

Hope these help.
what about modeling it after the first successful steam engine?
I also found another engine that looks really good:
"Best Friend of Charleston"
Norris's Engine:
Trevithick's "Puffing Devil"
Personally though, I think a vertical boiler design would be much easier to mod for, due to compactness of area.

Phew! Takes the pressure off a bit. :smile.gif:
I'm working on a Steam/Sail Ship , it'll be done today :biggrin.gif:
I'm naming it the "S.S Glimmar" after you.
