Paddle Steamer Sketch for MuadDib-- snip --
Hope this gives a better idea of what I was imagining. Only you know what is possible or practicle about this arrangement.
Even if it's not possible to be as complicated as this, just having that smoking chimney to fix on the cart or boat as they currently stand, would make a world of difference in a steampunk world.
Thanks for your efforts, mate. :smile.gif:
That is quite easy to do. Will need to use a custom texture file to fit all the pixels you'll be wanting to draw on that tho. And you want the same shapes on the powered minecart? (without the side paddles)
Something similar, but would it at least be possible to attach the shoebox and funnel/chimney to the top of the current furnace (all the graphics could stay the same then), then it's raised to a sufficient height to make it look steam train-like and the current furnace use and details would still be available.
Having said that, if it was possible to do something along the lines Triscelli described, it would be even better, but if we were confined to the current minecart mechanics, then as I describe above. Being pushy here, but would it be possible to use the paddle wheel mechanics to make a piston-like arrangement on the side?
I suppose the easiest thing would be to have the same mechanical and graphical arrangements for both vehicles. In which case, would it be possible to use the same 'kit' as a stationary steam engine for use as a simple animated device for folks to use in their builds? And for the future, how possible would it be to make this 'steam engine kit' a 'really useful engine', for such diverce things as pumping water(?), hauling loads up a mine-shaft? All the things that Notch alluded to in the past with ropes and pullies, etc. A tall order, I know, but this would be a big part of Minecraft for everyone I'm sure.
Anyway, if you want me to do a sketch for the 'train' cart, using the paddle steamer arrangement, give me a shout! Thanks, MuadDib. :smile.gif:

one thing at a time =)
the engine/pipe arrangement on a block is different, it would have to be an item that gets placed on a block, like a torch. if that is the case, i could probably create several animated parts that could be placed as you see fit onto walls and such, each with their own neat little animations. I'm not sure how or if items can be animated (only one i can think of is the switch, and thats only 2 positions) but if i can get a steady tick update off the engine I dont see why not
edit: if the above can be implemented, perhaps interfacing with redstone to 'power' the items? flip a switch on when you go inside your house and see all the doodads light up and move?
make a sketch for the powered minecart so i can get an idea where to start...keep in mind it doesnt have to keep the same geometry as the original item, this can be something built with entirely different structure. just keep to the cubic theme of MC...only 90 degree angles.
I've been building on the same world for about four months now. The last few weeks i haven't played the world much or built anything because i am pretty much done with it. When i built my base i used a 64x64 texture pack named, 'Animal Crafting'. I really liked the pack and since my base was kind of built around it, i never wanted to change it. When i first saw Glimmar's Steampunk texture pack i knew it was going to be a great pack. I wanted to try it then but i never did due to my using the other pack.
I just recently decided to stop playing/building in my world 4. While i was somewhat sad to say goodbye to it, i am looking forward to installing Glimmar's Steampunk and building with it for the first time! I've been following this thread since you first started it. Over time it has grown into an awesome thread. Between your work and everyone's submissions and suggestions, this pack has become truly inspiring. Viewing all the great user screen shots of their structures made me want to use this pack even more. I am also looking forward to starting a brand new world. I want to build a new base in the steampunk style. This should be lots of fun and renew my interest in building again. When i built my first base i had just started playing minecraft and didn't know much about it. My first shelter was a hole in a cliff and from that humble beginning i built my base outward in a haphazard manner. On my new world i will have a building plan from the beginning and i will apply what i have learned from world 4. This is going to be fun! =)
I made a farewell video of my home base in world 4. If you're interested in looking at it check my signature for part one and part two of it. Goodbye world 4! I shall visit you from time to time. Now where is that download link for Glimmar's Steampunk! Downloading!!!......and it's about time if i may say so myself. Yay me! =D
Just had a marathon session updating the OP at the top! If anyone submitted something and I've missed it, give me a prod. :smile.gif:

Maudib, could you make a steam engine block? So we can use it wherever?
I agree wholeheartedly.
'Course, Glimmar, this means you'll have to make a texture for that one, too.
:]
Lol! I know...I'm my own worst enemy! It'll be worth it though, for a minecart that looks more like a train and paddle steamer that paddles! :biggrin.gif:

I'll get straight on to that now! :smile.gif:
@ Telgar: Now I know your mad! Why anyone would wish to leave Dancrum's beautiful 'Animal Crafting' for my depressingly grey texture pack must be bonkers! Lol! That's a pretty awesome world you created there, mate. It kind of felt like the journey Charlie made in the great glass elevator in Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory. A load of cool ideas on display too!
Well if you can stand Glimmar's dimmer world for more than a few minutes I'm sure you'll come up with some awesome achievements. No running away now!
If anyone would like to share their Steampunk specific worlds, I could see about finding space at the top for a 'world' category with links. :smile.gif:
note: i'm thinking of creating a minecraft world "portal" similar to newgrounds or the littlebigplanet community, with user rating, and a searchable database. hopefully it catches on, and we can get people uploading cool steampunk creations. i'll have to add a "best viewed in theme" descriptor for the submission form.
I want to make more videos, but have no Steampunk type structures (I do the medieval castle thing). If anyone wants to share a save with their cool builds, I can make the video.

Mine Cart Steam Train Design for MuadDib
The idea behind this is to take the simplest approach possible to create a believable train shape and piston action. A kind of small 'shunter'. This design stays within the same physical boundary of the original minecart, which shouldn't (with my zero knowledge of coding) I would think, impact on the mechanics of pushing the normal minecarts or the wheel base needed for looking like it's still riding on the existing track.
Hope this gives you something to go on, MuadDib. :smile.gif: If you want it more or less complicated just give me a shout, but for now I better get some sleep (it's 1am. here in the UK and I'm up at 6.30am tomorrow!). Then on with some of the other textures tomorrow for release of new stuff, which will be some time after Notch's. My update could be a few days after Notch's, as I've a few other things to attend to as well. Sorry folks! :sad.gif:
Glimmar you should upload your minecraft would in all its epicness. it looks awsome from the small glimpes we get too see in the screen shots. i my self would really like to see all of it :biggrin.gif:

It's completely fine, I as well am going to be putting out items at a slower rate, as I have quite a bit going on right now (midterm week).
OK, here's my very lame attempt at creating a video of the NewSwan Castle.
Part 1 - the music is of course Vernian Process' "Unhallowed Metropolis" and "Curse of Whitechapel" I do not have the skills to make good vids like Gestankfaust.
Part 2 - simply the 2nd part. Fraps for some reason split the video file...probably due to the size! The apparent freezes are when I simply masked the vid frames to block you having to see the boring and tedious commands I enter to jump around the map.
@Gestankfaust, I'd be more than happy to let you create vids of the airships I've posted here in this forum by allowing you access to my server? If you are interested PM me your Minecraft username, I'll add you to the whitelist and give you Admin privs for full mobility to make great vids of my stuff?
@MuadDib, if you come through with the boat and cart...I will love you man, maybe homo...LOL

It is based on Nueschwanstein Castle in Bavaria Germany.
The popup text is a plugin to the hMod...a server wrapper. I abandoned the single player client months ago...the server with all the awesome plugins rule and you get to share it and play together with whoever you want.

Well, this thread has plenty of great pictures, ideas, and videos: A great place to start.
There's a few other inspirational threads on the forums: Try the Beta discussion threads.
Also, a google image search can help if you need some inspiration but are looking to build something in particular. Give it a shot!
