That's a pretty cool water (trap?), I see that you are ready for the next update, I'm only marginally worried, as my main base in one of my accounts is underwater.
Also, I'm honored that you are using one of my items, it made me feel a special kind of good to see people enjoying my work. Also, your texture pack looks really great and I think that I'll give it a look when I can.
Thanks!!
But thanks to you also for your work...Glimmar and this part of the community is inspiring me to build also. That structure in the back ground on the hill is being slowly built Steampunk style

working with the entity rendering system in mc is a bit of a bear...getting the shapes is easy...getting the proper u/v coords for the texture...not so much =) but its getting there. Im thinking I might have to expand the boat texture to a 64x64...the 64x32 has very little space left for extra details.
question: canopy? like that steamer pic you posted?
next up: spinning paddles. but thats...tomorrows story.
EDIT: just had a hilarious thought: rocket boosters on the minecarts. to hell with booster plates/carts, I want a rocket sled =)
Glimmar I'm glad to see you liked the jokes enough to mention them in the OP. You can actually link to a post from within your thread or to any other post. You may know how to do this already. If you do just disregard this.
Well, I knew how to link ok, but only to the url. So the rest was very informative for an old codger like me, but owing to the slow nature of my brain cells...picture a crowd of marathon runners at the end of a race...it'll take me a while to start to absorb all that. I'm going to copy/paste it onto my desktop so that I can refer to it. The idea of going back through this tomb of a thread though and putting shiney new links where appropriate at the top is filling me with dread! Mercy, mercy...take pity! I think that's why I lazily just put old fashioned page numbers in - it kind of seems more steampunk...well that's my lame excuse.
@ Gestankfaust: Love the video and some nice textures and building going on in there!
@ darkdiamond87: Haha! Love the little skin. Can I put it in Glimmar's Emporium at the top?

Wow! That's looking exciting already! Just being able to stick anything on the boat or cart would get me excited. A canopy would be great, especially if it could be decorated, etc, unless it obscures the view when your sailing and gawping at the landscape, like I often do! Any chance still of sticking my gas lamp texture in some form on top of the cart and boat boilers? I would refer to them forever after, as being powered by the 'MuadDib/Glimmar Steam Engine'.
Ha ha! Rocket sleds would be very popular, but might just be a tad too modern for steampunk. Now, 'steam thrusters' at the back with copper pipes coming out and running into the boiler would be awesome! :biggrin.gif: As an idea seperate from Steampunk (or perhaps not?), what about a steam powered jet-pack? Probably only entertaining via multiplayer though.
Whatever, I'm amazed at what you've done so far and looking forward to what you come up with next.
Wow! Love this second vid even better and the Vernian Process music just works so well! The chicken and the pig reference at the start were hilarious and the rest was very professionally put together! Awesome work and cool sense of humour. Nice one indeed, Gestankfaust!
More video goodness:
<video removed to save space>
Gestankfaust, what do you use to edit/compile your videos? I'm trying to put together some vids and currently I'm using fraps to record and VirtualDub to save/compress, but I'm not sure if it can do all the cool stuff I want it to do.

how do you want the lamp done? just stick a block in the middle of the boat floor that gets painted with the lamp texture? addding shapes is not difficult, as long as they are in some form of a 6 sided quadrilateral. the game engine allows me to add a uv offset to each box for determining where that shape gets its texture from, but its layout is fixed for which side gets the proper pixels, etc. im sure youve seen the pattern when you did the boat skin.
i also started messing with spinning objects, but i need to find how to properly update the rotation, right now its going by the frame rate of the client.. it will look normal at some view angles, and speed up ridiculously fast if you look up or somewhere not so busy in terms of entities/geometry. learning as i go =)

@MaudDib: This already looks proper fantastic, might I inquire did you do it with or without a modloader, but I guess you edited the classes so. Damn nice work to figure out the u/v coordinates for the texturing!
not quite there yet with the U/V mappings...im still looking at how the game engine generates the u/v's, the only control I have over that is specifying an offset into the texture.
right now im using the core boat classes. I saw a lava boat mod out there that uses risu's modloader framework. i have it decompiled so i can peek at the layout. the final product will be modloader compatible and have a proper crafting recipe to make the steamboat.
Man, the boat looks amazing so far. But, a quick request: After you're done, could you try modding the powered minecart? Let's see, I had some ideas posted on the forum SOMEWHERE... [rummage-rummage]
Ah, here it is!
Quote from Triskelli »
I was thinking about how one could go about modifying the textures and shapes on the normal powered minecart to achieve the desired effect:
Increased Speed, Increased Power, Lower Physics
The powered minecart is currently broken, no question. If we can tweak it to double walking speed, able to go up slopes for a substantial amount of time, and reduce the distance it bumps the other carts, we'll be well on our way to making the machine the workhorse it was meant to be.
Flip It!
This may sound strange, but flipping the actual cart portion of the minecart would do wonders for appearances: It provides more space to see the furnace on top, and when inverted the cart makes a great cow-catcher, much like a steam trolley. Ex:
Pimp Dat Furnace!
While the furnace accurately represents what the function of the powered cart, by itself it is a little... bland. If at all possible, other textures should be incorporated. While I'm using Glimmar's pack as a base, I picked these textures to be compatible with most texture packs.
Rear- Furnace opening. Wouldn't be a locomotive without a furnace.
Top, Sides- Wood. Give it a more rustic, Rocket look.
Front- Bottom of Iron Block. Just to top it off.
If any of these modifications can be accomplished, then we'd be well on our way to real locomotives in Minecraft.
^The one I really want to see is flipping the cart part of the minecart. Feel free to disregard the request, but I think it would be well worth the effort.

as with all things related to programming...anything can be done. all in due time of course =)
Just popping in to say that I have to clean the drool off the floor now.
Just when I thought this pack had reached the pinnacle of perfection, Glimmar manages to do himself one better. The minecarts in PARTICULAR are eye-poppingly fitting. THAT looks like a proper train under steam!
Oh, and if anyone is looking for a good Steampunk series for the kids AND yourselves, check out the Leviathan Trilogy. It's by Scott Westerfeld, and it depicts a alternate version of World War One, where Darwinist England and her allies have fabricated warbeasts, while Clanker Germany leads the world in battle machines. Not only that, but the books are filled with wonderfully detailed pictures, perfect for inspiration.
Oh yeah Keith Thompson (artist you posted above) may very well be doing our next album cover art! I asked him about it last Spring, and he seemed really enthused to work with us. His work is incredible.
@ MuadDib and Triskelli: I'm in complete agreement with trying to change the cart as Triskelli describes. he's put a lot more thought into this than I. As regards the torch, that was kind of just a quick request really, but if you're able to mess around with adding blocks (excited now!), then a small shoebox like block in the middle of the boat (or even my current furnace, if there was a bigger boat) with a tall narrow block vertically placed on the top could be textured to look more like a little boiler and chimney. How easy would it be to have the smoke particles that we have coming out of the fire and torches coming out from the top of the tall narrow chimney block? Whatever arrangement you come up with for the boat could perhaps also be used for the minecart, but Triskelli knows his stuff about trains and steam, etc.
...hang on... I'll do a sketch of what I have in mind.

That would be absolutely fantastic! His work is truly amazing and would be perfect on an album cover, making for a winning combination. His attention to detail makes you just want to linger over each drawing. Hope it all comes together, mate!
Paddle Steamer Sketch for MuadDib
Hope this gives a better idea of what I was imagining. Only you know what is possible or practical about this arrangement.
Even if it's not possible to be as complicated as this, just having that smoking chimney to fix on the cart or boat as they currently stand, would make a world of difference in a steampunk world.
More video goodness:

It's funny, but that was my fourth video of the day...ever!
I just got FRAPS and knew about Windows Movie Maker from forever but never had a chance or reason to make a video. WMM sorta incorporated some stuff that their program Power Point from the office suite does. I used to use PP to make videos back in the early 2000's. OpenOffice.org has open source programs that are designed to act like the MS Office products and are released for free. I might see if one of them puts a vid together better.
I made two videos for Agon's Xzen also. I'm starting with a guild buddy to collect stuff for reviews on the best that MC has to offer. Sorta like video tours. Turns out, I love doing videos and testing other packs almost more than making one :biggrin.gif:
As soon as Notch gives us an update, Glimmar will give us an update, and I will have another video...YAY!
Thanks for all the great replies everyone!!

That is quite easy to do. Will need to use a custom texture file to fit all the pixels you'll be wanting to draw on that tho. And you want the same shapes on the powered minecart? (without the side paddles)
