Edit: Wow, they're the same people who made Valve the Sentry.
Lol! Ha ha! And I was joking, thinking it was just a spoof vid or something. These things can actually be purchased (albeit models...please tell me they're not real!)? Don't you dare come back with a link to a real ray gun seller, Tlos, or I will seriously begin to doubt my sanity! Lol!

In the meantime does anyone have a DL link to any of those inspirational maps by chance?
That'd be great. I want to see them hands on if possible.
Many thanks from me and all those contributing with awesome stuff!
I don't have any links myself to the excellent builds on this thread, but sometime I'll get round to uploading mine...if and when I stop it looking so unkempt! :smile.gif:

I actually did test this for Soulscribe's Tron. But what I did was black them out as well as mess with the shadow, vignette, and clouds files all at once. Trying for a no light world. It just made everything look bizarre but still light.
A lot of it has to do with the other block textures as well. The world is still as light as any other pack, but if you have darker all around textures, as well as the green torches, it will look darker over all for the person using the pack. Mine is the same way because I like darker smooth stone, cobble, and such
That's interesting stuff to know! It's probably all my cobble and polluted water that does it in my world! Lol! Ha ha, I'm going to issue a warning to accompany my pack, "Do not enter if your spirit is easily dampened by depressing textures."

LOL, when I jump from the highest height, my stomach still does a small flip. And the clouds simply **** me off. If you can either move them to block height of 129 and remove them I'd be very interested.
Roundaround has a mod called Highclouds which places the clouds 7 blocks above the maximum build height.
Ooo! I think I'll check that out, thanks. :smile.gif:
PipeHead! exactly the same happens to me, even though I'm on peaceful. If I jump off from a height that I know isn't going to be fatal, it still gives me a rollercoaster feeling. Totally weird, because I don't remember any other game having this effect on me. It's obviously down to how preoccupied we get with building and immersing ourselves in such a physically believable environment. Notch got something pretty near perfect when he created the physics to Minecraft. Still wish there was some random whistling wind effect when we're up high (or for sanity...perhaps not! Lol.)

Same happens to me, I can jump from the top of the skybox all the way to the bottom in any source game, but as soon as I fall more than a few blocks (even if it won't hurt) I freak out.
Thanks for the input everybody, I think that I'll make the shovels pointing down (like a shovel), the agricultural tools will now be scythes, and I'll attempt to darken my items (I've been darkening them up a lot lately, look at the most recent version of the cane compared to the first version).
I could release my current items.png right now if you would want, it is basically a resized painterly pack item sheet, with my items placed in for testing. If you would want to see it, just ask. Otherwise, my main goal for the orientation of the sheet is as such;
the top two rows are bow/arrow replacements. Bow on the left, arrow on the right.
Going down the next fifteen rows, it goes as follows:
wood,
stone,
iron,
diamond,
gold.
(save for the last ones [the axes], the gold and diamond are flipped through fault of my own.
Though you are free to interpret the placement however you want.
As a side note, the forums haven't been eating my posts recently, that's nice.
Edit: Which ones, specifically, do you want me to darken?
A few quick questions before I start brainstorming ideas for my next set.
1. For the shovels, would you guys prefer the blade pointing at your head (like the defaults), or pointing forward (like the bow)?
2. For the hoes/sickles/cultivation implements, would you collectively prefer it as a simple farming hoe, or a more menacing, but more powerful (and easier to work with) scythe (actually more of a sickle with the sprite size limitations)?
3. If you have any suggestions, recommendations, alternatives, improvements, or fixes to my items (past or future), don't hesitate to ask/tell. (not much of a question really)
Forward pointing shovel please (I grew attatched to the Mixcraft style of shovel after using it for about a month)
The scythe sounds nice (So long as it has totally unnessary clock parts juxaposed all over)
Err, I feel kind of bad asking this but.. Could you set up the item.png sheet in the way you envision it (I'd do it myself but well, I have no idea how to even work a paintbrush, let alone the photoshopping things... But I stress that if you have no interest in doing the sheet then no problem. It's just a side request.
Tlos, I don't mind you putting together a complete item sheet, if you've the time and the inclination, so long as everything is original to the thread (all the stuff folk have submitted at the top) including your stuff, and doesn't use someone elses artwork (other than Notch's for placeholder purposes, etc). Tiger was kind enough to do this at one point, but I wasn't happy about the use of Misa's artwork (which is more than excellent by the way, sorry Misa!) and someone else within the past 5 pages also did an item sheet with instructions and correctly using the vanilla item sheet (sorry, kind person, but the forum or my internet is running so slow I haven't the time to search through for a link!)
I'm very much a believer in respecting others artwork, hence my caution, but it's a shame that many folks who can't edit the graphics are missing out on your excellent tools. I'll stick it at the top, and if and when I get round to doing something myself, it can still be available as an alternative, or incorporated with any gui textures I do, if better than my feeble attempts. No pressure though!
Sorry if all the above looks a little garbled! Just tired now and I'm trying to keep up with all the sudden influx of posts! :smile.gif: Hope it makes some sense...apologies otherwise!
An item sheet with the originals as place holders would be awesome. Then I/we could add the rest until it's complete.
(would make less pressure for you to complete me thinks too Tlos :biggrin.gif:)
That would be excellent, if not too much trouble for everyone! As soon as I can I will work, as promised, on a suitable gui style for furnace, craftbench, etc.
ps. Just visited your website, Gestankfaust. Fantastic work there...love it!

well, to be honest the place/pointing direction of the various items should be 2 things. 1. look natural and 2. do block the view. So for a sword, the natural position is out and up, but a hoe would be out and down, same with a shovel. Then the movement would look natural as well.
Since the quality allowed for items is minimal, keeping them simple might be best, just make sure they have that nice steampunk color palette. If tools ever get to a point where higher resolutions are effective then a revamp might be in order.
As for a hoe vs scythe...they are 2 different tools doing 2 different things, unfortunately this tools is used to perform both taskes. I think a scythe would look more menacing!
*EDIT* Well it's more than just darkening the colors...it's a shift in the color palette. For instance, the gold color, is lame...sorry, but it just looks odd. Now maybe a dark brass color or something? Or rusty? If you can get a good set of darker colors, then a highlight will have a nice impact.
One more thing, do you guys have any suggestions for artifacts to use for the stone shovel and scythe?
You guys make me wanna reply here too much
:biggrin.gif:
Stone shovel = JACKHAMMER FTW!!!
Scythe = could actually combine the hoe and scythe together somehow. Like so it would seem (from the icon) that you could reverse it for the different uses)
***EDIT - Just noticed that you had made the itmes a bit darker since I last updated my file...so don't kill yerself darkening them more
Sorry Tlos...but here's a cookie:

Sounds good, though I'm probably going to make a more archaeological find version as well.
There is a reason they suddenly became darker (and had their harshness lowered), the program I use to make these items (Pixen) really, really hates me. Every time I open, move, copy, paste, or do anything but draw a file, it screws tremendously with the coloring. I realized when the canes started looking pure red, while all of the other items on my sheet was just black. Now I use Pixen to create the items, and Photoshop (I'm not very good with it) to put the sheets together.
Just popping in to say that I have to clean the drool off the floor now.
Just when I thought this pack had reached the pinnacle of perfection, Glimmar manages to do himself one better. The minecarts in PARTICULAR are eye-poppingly fitting. THAT looks like a proper train under steam!
Oh, and if anyone is looking for a good Steampunk series for the kids AND yourselves, check out the Leviathan Trilogy. It's by Scott Westerfeld, and it depicts a alternate version of World War One, where Darwinist England and her allies have fabricated warbeasts, while Clanker Germany leads the world in battle machines. Not only that, but the books are filled with wonderfully detailed pictures, perfect for inspiration.
I have been using the pack for a while and LOVE it. I have also gotten a few friends to start using the pack. I would definitely love to have some official items included in the pack.
My wish would be for a set of "glimmerized" default items and not extreme changes to what they look like, ie: leaving the bow and arrow as a bot an arrow instead of changing it to a pistol and bullets. Although the items that Tlos has been working on do look cool I prefer to mine with picks and dig with shovels.
So, I really liked how that sword came out, so I did a few more. I'm not going to switch my style over to this, but I will try to make one of these per diamond tool.
No more tonight, more tomorrow (if I have any free time).
