Quick request - could you start saving your screencaps as .png, rather than .jpg? You're getting a lot of compression artifacts that are really taking away from the images.
biodude I'll look into that as soon as I can! Thanks for pointing that out.

Perhaps for the mob spawners some sort of tesla coil or a sort of "Jacob's ladder" device.
Nice idea! I'll look into that too. Mmmm. Copper spirals! Not sure how I'd get the Jacob's Ladder to work, but good to muse over. Thanks.

I really wish I could get my hands on your terrain.png file!
***** That iron gear box is pure win!!!! ****
My next favorites are your doors, craftbox, wood, torches and raw diamonds. Really really nice work. I don't say that a lot, the only other pack I really like is the Doku set. (Which I'm currently using modded with my own glass & flowers). Btw I like big cobble and where you ended with yours.
So puh-leaze release soon so I can enjoy your gadgety goodness! You can always release newer versions so don't worry that it has to be perfect the first time.
Don't worry, I'm not going to sit on this any longer than necessary, I don't 'think' I'm too much of a perfectionist, lol. At the mo' there are just too many bits and pieces on my Terrain.png that belong to other artists. Just a few more important elements to get right, then I don't mind putting it up with due credit for any artwork that belongs to others. Is that OK?
The iron block was my answer to Notch not doing anything about gears, pulleys and cogs and all that side of things. Pure cosmetic, but that's what a lot of Minecraft is about anyway.
The more I read of this thread the more excited I become! I want this! Right now I'm useing a haphazard custom mixture of Doku's, Painterly and a few others. I really like the look of this.
Polluted Dock Water Scandal in Glimmar's Domain! - A Real Victorian Pea Souper!
Only water not fog, I'm afraid. Just been experimenting with the colour of the water, now that we can have our own versions animated in HD. This is Doku's water texture at the moment and looking very 'Dickensian' in my Dockland area (still only half dug out). All we need now are sewer rats swimming around and ripples and I would die a happy man! Lol :biggrin.gif:
What do you think? Works a treat with the gas lamps. I could supply both varieties of water eventually, and you could use either depending on your mood.
^This 100x The water really makes the shoreline pop, and that Crane continues to really set the tone. I'll make sure to have 'em every time I build something.
Oh, and slightly off topic: You mentioned you were a professional artist? What do you illustrate for?
Hey again, I'm hopefully going to help our most treasured texturer (mine personally) with some inspirations. These are thrown together drawings and didn't require any of my usuall expertise so please don't critisice..
Gold: Gold could be in the form of a crate, like wood but a circular hole cut in the side (like a boat's porthole) to show the contents, or this:
Diamond: My idea referrs to the diamond block , instead of the ore . it could either be a crystalised structure, , or a gears 'n' clockwork like this,
Jukebox: Jukeboxs I think would be brass, copper, glass, black metal, gold and maybe some precious gems. In case you didn't know, the circle near the bottom is a gauge (steam, pressure, etc):
Track and Minecart: As for the track and the minecart in particular, teak, mahogany and brass spring to mind for me, this being my idea: and this
Redstone wire and torches: I was thinking the wire would be brass piping with a thin hole down the center which turn from black to grey/white when turned on. As for the torches, a pipe with a black metal "gauze" type thing which billowed grey smoke when on.
Brick: Brick would be dark and gloomy, almost like the Great Depression (not as depressing though) like this:
Thats all for now, hope it helps and cobblestone like the brick but if the bricks were rounder and darkened at the edges. maybe a blue-ish tinge to them??
Thanks for taking this project up, beat me by a week.
EDIT: And an idea for the lantern, when it should come, could be "London"ised like this:
The Dark Satanic Mill! No, not a reference to William Blakes famous poem, just my first rendition of the 'brick' texture. Looks okay from a distance and at night, but during the day and close up, it looks a little too bright. Trying to go for that 'sooty black mortar with a hint of moss in the cracks' look. :smile.gif:
Sorry the mill/warehouse isn't finished, I ran out of bricks, 'cos I can't find any more flappin clay in my world, without taking my save above 50mb. Anyway, I never usually have fog on in Minecraft, but looking at the dock 'pea soup' water and this warehouse, made me wonder what it would look like with a good Victorian 'smog'. I was quite pleased with the effect and it certainly seemed appropriate. Still could do with a goodly sized rat to scamper past - a pink pig did the honours, but didn't quite cut it as a stand in 'rabid rat'. I'm definately thinking there will be an entrance to Notch's new hell world somewhere in this mill, when it's finished!
Incidentally the brick texture is taken from the wall of my spooky cellar. As I live in a Victorian house it seemed appropriate not to waste it as a prop. The idea that 10 of my damp bricks might go on to spawn virtual empires is hilarious!
Hope you like. :smile.gif:
ps. Thanks for all your compliments and suggestions - I am looking at them and feeling very encouraged to persevere.
To 'Triskelli', after leaving Art college, I used to work in the Arts Management side of things, having the glorified title of 'Keeper of Art Galleries and Museums' for a local authority, then I left, after burning myself out staging a 'Dan Dare' exhibition, of all things, and returned to painting. I do many freelance things now, but mostly landscape painting and photography and also fantasy stuff for myself, nothing famous or interesting I'm afraid. Picture the typical impoverished artist, trying to help support a family, and you get the picture! :sad.gif:
Wow, this texture pack is looking amazing, to say the least.
I'm not really the artsy type, but Steampunk has always grabbed my attention, probably because of the really mechanical aspect of it. I'm thrilled to see that you're getting that style into Minecraft.
Can't wait, dude, it's going to be awesome. It's at the top of my "watching these texture packs" list. :]
I'm sure you've found some images of bricks yourself to help inspire you, but here are some of the walls of brick I've seen on my campus (started in 1801!)
One of the keys to making old-timey bricks look aged is to carve away the mortar between them, or make the bricks especially lumpy, as chips have fallen away over the years.
Oh, and I apologize if my other question hit a little close to home there, I suppose I was asking in a roundabout way if you had drawn the avatar you are using, because I truly admire it.
Awesome texture pack. Can't wait until it's done so I can start on some(attempted) Thief recreations.
On another note, what did you use for the support columns in front of the house? It looks like a post from the fence, but there's nothing coming off of it.

Done. here you go.
they look more like vacuum tubes if there against some kind of background
On a less creepy note... awesome! I can't wait to try this out for myself.
