I love the look of this, though. Bloody good job. :biggrin.gif:
Thanks, mate. Just been over to look at your pack and at 16x16 an amazing job. Loved your copper cow, he's just awesome and it gives a new meaning to that blocky walk all the mobs have...more appropriately robotic in my opinion.
Best of luck with the texture pack competition, jehkoba. For all steampunks out there you deserve to win with that!
I'll put a link at the top of my thread. Just let me know if you'd rather I didn't. :smile.gif:
I've just been reliably informed that most folks who have shown an interest in Glimmar's Steampunk think I'm a female! :biggrin.gif:
Sorry to disappoint anyone, but the last time I checked [quick inspection] I'm very much of the male persuasion I'm afraid, despite steampunk attachments and workshop accidents! :biggrin.gif:
I'm not sure how this misconception came about, but it's certainly brightened my weekend up and my wife is now giving me funny glances. It's a funny old world really, but...no, seriously no instant gender changes or anything, despite the fact I like my gadgets!!
One of the reasons I am so slow to update and finish this pack off, is that with 3 offspring and a wife demanding attention, Christmas on the way, bills and house repairs, it leaves me with very little time for Minecraft! :sad.gif: My 3 kids all play Minecraft at different times and I'm constantly sorting their problems and mods out too!!! Oh for a nice Minecraft desert island. [sigh]

I've been using your texture pack fora month now, and IO really like it, but I had an idea, what if you made coal like some sort of energy substance? Like a steam canister or something of the sorts. Also, do you have any idea how to get the music to work, I've used risugami's and I've yet to hear it ingame.
How about replace the powered minecart by some steam powered small engine? This may be nice to watch steam engine pulling carts through base or something like that. I will be happy to read comments about that idea.
For this theme, I would die for a mod like that, even just some extra puffs of steam coming out the top of the powered Minecart or moving pistons would be awesome! I think, sadly, this would be too much to ask for...though one can dream. I am intending to work further on the minecart to try and introduce wheels, and/or pistons and cogs. I'm only a lowly artist and coding is way out of my comfort or talent zone, so only cosmetic changes I'm afraid! :sad.gif:
Dear Glimmar
First off , let me thank you for the amazing mod pack. I fell in love with it the moment I first saw this thread and have downloaded every update since. The art and effort placed into the pack and the wonderfull little community of like-minded helpers that has grown here brings warmth to my old pessemists heart
With this in mind , let me know if you want help with design for the powered minecart mods. Im very much a steam buff and no matter what your requirements , I can probably find some photos and schematics for a locomotive to fit. Personally , I recomend one based on this design from Mid nineteenth century Scotland
It is very unusual in that it has only one cylinder , but there is no reason why in the physics-free minecraft world that youd know this :smile.gif:
Scott
Many thanks for those kind words, Scott. :smile.gif:
There's something about Minecraft and this community here which is pretty neat! Love the pics you uploaded. It would be amazing if some modder could make it possible to assemble items onto the side of the cart and boat, even if only in a very limited way. Perhaps one day someone will.
The problem we all have as texture pack creators is the limited palette we have to work with. the cart being an example means that anything I paint on to the sides by way of steam engine decoration also has to look right for a baggage cart (with chest) or a plain minecart kind of look, as they all share the same base cart design. Those pics you uploaded are about the right proportions, do you have anything photographs like that, showing everything in it's brass and painted glory. Especially anything showing the wheels, rivets, cogs, etc.?
I don't want to change my furnace design, so that is inevitably part of the powered minecart design, but I definately want to improve the mechanical feel of the general cart design. So any pics to get me inspired are always appreciated. Look forward to seeing an pics of your world too.

Seriously though, thanks for the extra work on those title screens. I'll choose one for my next update. I was a little disappointed though that unless I start the game in a window, all your excellent work gets lost off screen, bottom right. Not your fault, mate. Just the way the title page gets stretched when I make it fullscreen. I'll just have to put instructions in to run the game at first in a window and then increase to fullscreen when they're at the menu! Unless you know a way round this? I don't want anyone missing out!

Also, do you have any idea how to get the music to work, I've used risugami's and I've yet to hear it ingame.
First of all, really glad you like the pack. I'm doing my best to make it even better, with the limited time I have. :biggrin.gif:
As regards your idea for the coal...well, CubicMeter a few posts back had this idea:
Quote from CubicMeter »
Also, since I've been mining coal recently I was thinking, Why not make coal ore look like rock with crystaline bubbles that contain florescent gas? Then the coal item would look like one of these bubbles of gas that you could harness for light (torches) and furnace fuel.
I really liked that idea because it ties in so well with the way green gas lamps and the green furnace fires are fueled. The canister idea is a good one, but I think more so for a modern science fiction kind of theme.
As regards the music. It isn't in game. The idea is that you are free to download and play the music in the background on any music player, courtesy of an extremely generous Vernian Process.
I have looked into the use of the music in game and feel it's not possible without making my pack more complicated to install for your average Minecraft user, and there is a limit on track length hard coded (as far as I am aware) within the game.
I don't mind recommending appropriate mods that will improve the quality of this pack, but as I keep reminding folks, I am merely a humble artist, not a coder...responsibilty for choosing and installing those mods rests with the player. I'll always try to help where I can, but as the mods are created by others there is a limit to what i can do. I don't want the pack to become too top heavy with necessary mods and complicated instructions that entail further responsibility from myself to maintain.
The amount of time I have to spend on new textures and finishing off the pack is already extremely limited. With every update that Notch introduces, I have to help folk get through any broken textures caused by xau's mod failing. The last thing I want is to add to that nightmare with yet more broken mods on 'update days'. Keeping the installation of this mod as simple as possible is my motto, then I have the chance to work on those much needed gui's and items, etc.
No one loves Vernian Process's music more than I, but it's really not that difficult to make up your own track selection in your favourite music player, turn down Notch's music, and enjoy the atmosphere. Vernian Process have been extremely generous to us. Hope you'll check out their amazing website too! :biggrin.gif:
Sorry, mate, I didn't mean to turn this into a lecture, but just so that anyone else looking in wondering about the music understands why it's not an integral part of this pack, though ideally it would be great if that could be done. Who knows, when Notch starts work after Christmas on a new system of implementing mods, he may make it possible for us to drop our favourite tracks directly into the game to be played at key moments. That would be wonderful! :smile.gif:
Thanks again for the great support Glimmar. I wanted to let you all know that I posted a demo for one of our new songs. It's just a rough take, and it's just to flesh out some ideas, but I think it would make great cavernous survival music =)
Yeah, just check custom water/lava and they will stay.
Also, sorry about the lack of updates, I've been busy this weekend. I'll start working on the other tools tomorrow. After that, I plan on working through everything else.

The track is called "What Lies Dreaming?" and is based on the Cthulhu Mythos.
I'm listening to this as I type! Wow! I'm amazed by your generosity and the talent of yourself and the band. I'm currently reading H P Lovecraft. The compendium of his works, and if I had time I'd have loved to have done a texture pack based on that mythos.
I agree though, this track works really well down in the dark. I've yet to make a vid. with your music (i'm even more busy with RL as we approach Christmas!), but Tiger4Ruler, a mainstay and great help on this thread, has already put together a trip through his world including a track from 'Behold the Machine' and it makes such a difference in atmosphere. Here's the link on youtube:
I've also put it up on the first page of this thread. We will do more and give you links as soon as I can. I'm torn in many directions at the moment. I'm sure you know the feeling! :sad.gif:
Thanks so much for the extra track, Josh. I know you say it's just a rough take, but it sounds fantastic to me and hope we get a chance to hear the finished piece! Awesome work and generosity of spirit in letting us hear it. Your music fits so well with the dark moody atmosphere of this themepack. :biggrin.gif:

Great stuff, Tlos. Don't worry about the delay. Makes me feel less guilty about my lack of work (seriously not through lack of desire to work! Just Christmas and the family!). I've asked Tiger4 Ruler to hold off releasing anything by way of an item sheet until the original artwork has all been replaced by yours, his and others who have generously contributed, then I'm not stepping on anyone else's creative toes. I will however, attempt to do something about one of the gui's, at least to give you and others some idea where I'll be taking the look of it. Then a temporary sheet can be released until I get round to doing something myself. Very grateful for everyone's contributions. :smile.gif:
I never realised what a beast this texture pack and it's management would become. Lol! :biggrin.gif:
Now away to sleep, it's 2am in the morning here and I've work in the morning! zzzz
But anyways I took a crack at some things just to see how it turned out. I know a auto crossbow was made up but I decided to just try and make up a steampunk gun based off of this picture (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs40/f/2009/ ... terego.jpg) and I came up with this item icon based off of gun H
and I made a round shot to replace arrows
I did these in 32x32 but I think you guys are working at higher resolutions, but these were all just a spur of the moment things.
Glimmar, don't take it the wrong way. People think I'm female all the time. It's your kind ways. Most males on the internet tend to be overtly-aggressive and assertive, with very little time for politeness or niceties. Regardless.
I'd like to ask something. I don't feel right doing so, but it is what it is. One of the things I didn't like about Gerudoku was the leather armor was a suit. Clothing. I know the armor name is 'cloth' but it's obviously made from leather. If at all possible, I'd like, whenever you get to your items.png of course, to have an optional leather armor as opposed to some suit or other. An alternate, if you will, as I'm sure most would like a nice morning suit for their 'leather.' Again, whenever you get to your items.png of course. And if you don't even want to do it, I can't complain. The texture pack is nice as it is.
Oh, and I whipped up an overlay for MrMessiah's SimpleMap. Unfortunately, it's just some yellow-shifted gears from the default minecraft.jar stuck in the corners of the Doku overlay that comes with his SimpleMap (as well as some minor changes to make things fit better). I'm not really an artist, more of an editor.
