Glimmar have you ever heard of Flaxbeard's Steam Power? If so you should make textures for it!
Howdy, Alec, and welcome to the forums here.
I certainly have heard about Flaxbeard's Steam Power! It's an excellent mod and I'd love to have the time to do some textures for it, but as everyone knows around here I struggle to keep on top of updates for the base pack...what with all the extra stuff I do for use with MCPatcher. My next update alone has thousands of new textures, by way of 'connected textures', random, repeat, overlaid, etc. and many reworked 32x textures into 64x. So I'm afraid someone else would have to take that task on.
There are so many mods I love the look of and it's a constant source of frustration that I don't have the time to work on any of them, but I also have to stay instep with MC updates and MCPatcher and most mods are usually one step behind. I know it's easier these days to have multiple iterations of Minecraft, but skipping backwards and forwards between versions would be so complex for me I'd eventually blow a gasket or something with lack of sleep. Last night for example I worked until 3am in the morning to finish off a new random Mycelium texture (over a hundred textures!), then make my packed lunch ( yummy!) and had to be up at 6.30am for work and to ferry my youngest to school. Zzzzzz is how I feel at the moment! The mycelium texture turned out alright though.
Thanking you, sir, much obliged. Lots more to show soon. Balancing the 'creation' and 'show' sides to the work to try and keep things moving to a timely update.
sneaking in to say that 1.8.1 is out, realy hoping that gets rid of the "punch a 2 blocks tall grass and a pink flower pops up for a split second" bug. also, grrrreat job on the textures so far glim, you have exceeded yourself again, such proffesional, much great, very love! ^^
getting back full throttle onto my projects ...
Ooo! I shall check this out and hope that MCPatcher still works with it. Didn't know about the pink flower bug though. Hope they've fixed the invisible block bug I get for every 3 or 4 blocks I put down. The invisible block does always reappear when you put another block down after it, but it spoils the flow of building...and i still don't get mipmapping!!!
Oh yeah! Although they are used often in subway stations and the like I wasn't really making the connection that they might be of interest to anyone with a passion for railways, but glad you like the idea. Anyways, I hope they turn out ok and of some real use when you see them.
and yeah, the invisible block bug is REALY annoying, im getting it as well. the mipmapping is a strange thing, i saw forums talking about varying bugs of it.
for example, some rare times i see textures in the far distance (usualy there where the mip mapping comes to life) flickering every frame very rapidly from an ON to OFF state, like it cant decide whether its on or not.
in the ".minecraft" folder should be arround 3 images of your currently using textures shrinked down, search for them, maybe it got deleted somehow and it cant find them or create them anymore, for whatever reason.
*drum-roll*
but ALL these bugs we have is just a big chunk of Luck! LUCK I SAY!
my friend complains of major permanent fps drop since 1.8 and the pre releases as well.
he has a Nvidia Gforce gtx 580, and he always ran minecraft 1.7.x in arround 800 fps.
but since 1.8 it fell down to arround 100 fps with the same 20 chunks view distance as always. (and since then we couldnt join to each others server even through hamachi, but thats another giant story)
we thought: ok the fps is not that bad, we can still play, and search for a dedicated server. he is having bad luck as the only person on the planet.
I, on the other hand have a magnificent fps boost since 1.8.
but that was only the beginning:
1.8.1 just came out and he couldnt choose it in the launcher some times, but as he could ... well
let me show a screenshot he made and sent me through skype:
notice the fps, the not enough dedicated ram for some reason, and his graphic card. it makes no sence, right (lol) [see pic above]
it was a total game breaker for him, i feel so sorry for him :,(
Hang on a mo'. That's the same nVidia card as mine, but although I'm now bemoaning the loss of mip-mapping (after all the extra detail I've added into the pack) I would say overall everything is running faster for me too. so I really sympathise with your friend...and to only get 6 fps in what looks like vanilla MC is crazy!
I'm somewhat relieved to hear that some others are having/have had some problems with mip-mapping. I saw only today someone had posted that mipmapping had ceased to work for them since 1.8, but apart from myself he hadn't had a single reply. I think the problem is 1.8 just introduced too many major changes to a system already groaning under it's own weight and it's sprung leaks all over the place!
I just tried MC 1.8.1 with the current MCPatcher and everything works minus all the extra color...and mipmapping is still bust! So I've gone back to pre1.8.1 until things are better.
[edit] Actually hadn't noticed that kahr had updated the patcher already to 5.0.0_02 for MC1.8.1.This latest version works fine for me and all special colors are back in the landscape and water. So just the mipmapping to fix for me now and then I'll be really happy.
The only thing I haven't tried with regard to my mipmap misfortune is completely wiping MC off my system and re-installing everything...something I am extremely reluctant to do in the middle of a huge chaotic update! While MC works well enough with MCPatcher I am not rocking my little boat any more than I absolutely need to. After I successfully get some kind of update out I'll set to and scrub all the barnacles off my little steamer...but not before.
On a brighter note, somewhat, I have a lot of new stuff to show, but I've just been under a lot of pressure from RL these past few days...and I've got behind on my sleep too, so apologies for not showing any progress towards a very long overdue update.
Good luck with that! Start with roads and rail going off in all directions from a central station. That will break up the land into building lots and then having to lay bridges for road and rail will create some interesting construction areas - both urban and civic centres. Have fun!
Just sorry you're not starting it with all my new textures, but that's my fault for being a slow coach!
After seeing all the screenshots of your city with the awesome new textures, it inspired me to start building a city a few weeks ago too (even though construction has halted with the release of Pokemon Omega Ruby |D). I've been using chroma hills since it just looks so cool as well, but i often switch over to glim's pack and it makes it feel like a whole different place while staying the same. everyone knows the remaining textures'll be well worth the wait.
i also just wanted to say again just how amazing your textures look, glim! it holds a special place as the first texture pack i fell in love with.
nooonononono, youre not right glim, youre doing a relatively good job on catching up, you told us about RL, and still youre updating us with GREAT screenshots of your amazing textures, youre getting there in no time ;D
dont worry, your situation is understandable. and all the peeps who cant keep theyr arses quiet about the slow catch up are most obviously not aware of your situation and need to be updates by looking at the threads latest posts... THERE!!!
we back you up, mate!
Thanks, I appreciate that. Alex.
The delay is certainly not for want of effort, just circumstances and wanting to make the update make sense even if I'm releasing it without the new 'sea' stuff like prismarine and Guardians. Also the banners and new items will come later. However, I'll probably sneak some of the new items in like the new door items, then things don't look too ugly.
Having finished all the new stone textures, rough and smooth, I then went on to work on a new Mycelium dirt texture, all tied in with the new dirt I made back in early summer. There's a load of random variety in this new texture, and even though I say so myself, looks really eerie with the new cobweb and mushrooms and the added bonus is that it looks really good under water too, in that it looks very much like coral - the random elements switching from looking like fungi to looking like sponges and the like...a very pleasing effect for a staged shoreline or shallow sea/river. What you said about the prismarine blocks kind of lodged in my brain and surfaced in my mycelium!
Now I'm working on all the sandstone and that's the last really big job before uploading. Big in the sense that I'm going right back to making new sand and sandstone before moving on to the red sandstone so that everything ties together as well as I'm able. I'm trying to introduce some greater variety of cut, uncut and weathered sandstone using ctm. Therefore I've been scouring my own collection of photographs for suitable textures and roving around my own locale to get what I need while the sun still shines here...low winter sun makes for some excellent contrast on wall textures.

Ooo! I'm glad Newglim had some influence on your own city project. Just making a city seems to me the best reason for lots of projects and also sets any special builds in context when you step back and admire your work. Best of all you can just continue sprawling outwards with some purpose, building all the things you'd expect to find in the city of your imagination. Well it's kept me going for 4 years!
And if you're not building it directly with my pack you couldn't have chosen a better one than ChromaHills, it definitely sets the standard for all to aspire to.
However, I still hope to impress you guys with the huge changes and additions I've made for the next update.
To this end I will try to show more little vids of all the new things that have accumulated since spring. It's worth bearing in mind that everyone's patience has meant that, not feeling too pressured to work to a deadline, I can make worthy and meaningful edits and not 'rush jobs' like I've done in the past.
I'm another year older this weekend, so I'm not sure how my free time will pan out the next couple of days, but hopefully I'll be able to fulfill my tentative promise to get more vids together soon.
So I know you are busy with the plethora of new textures, but I saw that the rail texture was still 32x.
I put together a simple 64 texture from pieces of the dark oak plank texture and coal block texture, mainly just to put as a placeholder, but i thought it was worth sharing, so why not.
(Only straight and curved track, did not do anything with the powered, detector, or activator rails yet.)

Very cool indeed!
Which of course means I'll have to work on rail textures myself as soon as poss. As you probably already know I don't accept any other textures for the main pack any more, however, with your agreement I'll stick your version in the 'Alt Textures' download for the next update.
Makes me jealous already that I haven't had the time to work in that area yet, curse you Mojang, but I'm sure your efforts here will be well appreciated by others.
Thanks Glimm, and yes, it would be great if you put them in the alt textures.
If I get something done later for the rest of the rails I'll post them as well.
Good, good!
It's nice to share and it shows folks like yourself are interested enough to spend time on something I can't take for granted as being of interest to anyone other than myself. (if that makes sense?)
Thanks for the pics, guys. Don't ever be afraid to make suggestions or upload pics of ideas for mobs, etc. I may not like them or be able use them, but you never know...inspiration is triggered in many ways and often, combined with my own ideas, some nice things pop into existence.
Sorry I didn't get round to posting pics or vids this weekend, what little time I had was spent on struggling to make something worthy of the new sandstone textures. It turned out to be a much bigger task than I anticipated.
There's a lot of changes to sandstone and everything has to tie together with the new sand and in turn with dirt and stone...so a lot of color balancing, re-editing, etc, and as it's all in large numbers of random 64x ctm, so things look natural, cutting out over and over again every edit to see how things look together is very time consuming, but necessary.
There are some big changes which you might or might not hate me for. I'm really pleased with the new textures, but I've swapped things around to take advantage of extra 'double slab' possibilities. So now normal sandstone you find in the landscape will look natural and blend in with the new rougher sand and will appear more 'rock' like (kind of making for a good sandstone equivalent of cobble) and to get 'refined' blocks of sandstone for building large civic buildings it will be necessary to build with sandstone slabs. Another advantage to this, by the time I've finished, is that you will have an extra sandstone block type to build with and possibly more later once I take advantage of other ctm methods.
This decision will impact on anyone who has built extensively with sandstone using previous versions of my pack, so if this is too game breaking for you you might need me to make another add-on pack to swap sandstone textures back to refined sandstone blocks until you decide the new textures are more to your liking. This affects me too, and I'm already refurbishing some of my buildings to take advantage of the new textures.
Everything is still being experimented with still, but once the sandstones are sorted to a satisfactory level then I will be in a position to think about final presentation (there's an awful lot to show as proof of work) and then upload. Although I can't estimate when that will be, please understand every bit of free time I get to sit in front of my PC is spent on resource pack work.
I'm really enjoying all the updates! Great idea for the paintings. Also great idea for sandstone, this allows for more variation in design which is very welcome in the creative landscape that is Minecraft! I'm looking forward to v16 and all of the new things!

Ah! Many thanks, Cupric. Thanks for saying.
At this late stage I need all the encouragement I can get to keep on ploughing through all the necessary changes, so I appreciate the encouragement. As much as I love texturing, experimenting and building in Minecraft, having to work through so many edits upon re-edits to get everything to work together can become somewhat tedious after a while...especially just after a steam sale, my birthday and a few nice bargain presents just sitting on my desktop...staring beguilingly at me.

@ Lightning.. I, for one, really read "all that". When someone has spent this much time to help others explore a different way to look at Minecraft, it is only to our benefit to "read all that". It is through reading all of the posts, by everyone, that we actually meet them. We find their likes and dislikes, interests and about their real lives as well.
No offence but do you really think everyone is going to read all that?!!
If you just want the most recent updates you can go to page 608 and look for big picture posts, skipping all of the text posts and only looking at updates.
On the other hand. Glimmar, Maybe creating a new thread may allow you to fix your OP while allowing new users to catch up to more recent things. Maybe in a new thread you can post it and then nab the first comment and just update the first comment when you post updates so people just checking in can get the most immediate update and have a list of links to the various update posts. That seems like a whole lotta work though.

Welcome! I'm glad some newer people have taken the time to read through and really get to know how this pack got to where it is today! I got busy at school this semester and finally just got caught up since page 600-ish and I'm glad I took the time to read it all.
