Beautiful as always, but is it just me or does the coarse dirt look a bit blurry?
I fear it's a little too complex really...too cluttered, but it'll do for now as a spring board. Hehe...I could always use it as an alt slime spring or something!
Blurry dirt? Have you been at that ale bottle again?!
I think it's just what happens with some textures when they get stretched with Minecraft's perspective. The same is happening to the trapdoor in some of the pics. Best explanation I can give, either that or Minecraft's been at the ale bottle too!
Probably somewhere between steampunk and dieselpunk, but some of these experiments just turn out that way. The trouble with trapdoors is they kind of have to work all four ways, so once you introduce a bit of mechanism into it it has to be repeated four times for symmetry's sake.
I've made a good few colour variations of this design too...must be mad!

Thanks, mate.
At some stage I'll be working on sand/sandstone stuff and clay, etc, etc. but for now I'm concentrating on the 1.8 stuff and trying to fix everything that got broke for use with MCPatcher.
[quote=Cynips;/members/Cynips;/forums/mapping-and-modding/resource-packs/1223223-glimmars-steampunk-v15-hybrid-vast-collection-of?comment=12215] Beautiful coarse dirt and gorgeous trapdoors! Awesome work mate!
Thanks to you too, Cynips.
The dirt is just the same as the normal new dirt I'd worked on earlier this year, but as that was already fairly coarse looking (to blend better with the new stone and gravel) it works really well and blends seamlessly with normal dirt. However, it would still be nice to have some distinct features for each type of dirt. It's all about 'time management' really, when MCPatcher allows one to introduce so much variation.
ps: Whatever I do I can't seem to get your quotation box to close, Cynips. However many times I put an 'end quote' command at the end of your comment it gets stripped out. This new forum setup is so frustrating!!! Anyways apologies for it being messed up.
Thanks for the forum commiserations, guys. I still keep occasionally trying to get my sig to work without success, but I can't face tackling my OP incase I get bogged down with it getting even more garbled! I'm kind of waiting to jump the OP hurdle when I'm ready to update...and not looking forward to the huge changes I'll have to make.
I'm currently assembling all sorts of bits and pieces of door designs, fittings and the like to make a proper worksheet for the new doors. Also I had a neat idea for a new painting, so neat is this idea that I'd be surprised if it hasn't already been done before, but I better not get distracted from doing the doors, as the idea is probably more involved than my giant animated clock painting.
I've nearly finished all the doors, barring some fittings and fixtures like handles and hinges, etc.
I'm not going to say at this stage what each door is as, apart from the oak and iron doors, none of the designs will look very much like the material they are made of. I hope the doors will be combined with many different materials, like stone and brick and not just wood.
As you will notice if you're familiar with the pack, I've also been working on a new oak door to match the other new 1.8 64x doors. This is still at an early stage though, so may change quite a lot from the old 32x design, but overall should still have the same feel as the original with brass locking rods and such.
Some noteworthy points:
The black enamelled door was designed with things like the 'Tardis' police box and Victorian prison cell doors and the like in mind, and some of the pics hopefully show how it might be used, but as is the way, I'm sure you'll come up with many more uses.
Some of the doors have 'see-thru' fittings, but they don't match with what Mojang chose for their doors.
The new iron door has been randomised and re-coloured from what was first shown a month ago. I've tried to give it more of an 'iron' rather than 'brass' look to better fit with both the rivetted 'box' (coal block) block and the new 'girder' window.
As I'm not intending at this stage to make the doors into 'models', I've tried my best to make the designs work well at the edges (sides and top).
I've tried very hard not to put rivets on absolutely everything...just where it seemed appropriate!
I thought it important to have a few doors that were just reasonably plain designs, to better fit more mundane mass use. However, all have been made to look old, worn, Victorian, etc...with a bit of iron work/brass decoration and/or industrial strength to match.
I thought it important to have a range of colours and styles for variety throughout a city build, but as mentioned above, not closely matching the material from which they would be made if one was playing 'survival'. I don't normally use my pack for anything other than creative building now, and mostly only on my city build of Newglim, so the 'practical look of something' for use in creative has always superceded the literal MC material one would expect in survival.
Anyways, here are the new door pics in their not quite finished state...hope you like 'em:
Rest of the pics? Click the spoiler button. Beware...there's a lot!
I have to be honest and say I'm getting a bit burned out and jaded at the moment, especially as there are obviously some things buggy with vanilla MC that I now depend upon, and MCPatcher might take a while longer than expected...meaning I can't properly test and re-work 'ctm' textures to fit the new 'naming' system that Mojang introduced in 1.8.
These doors have taken all my spare time this past couple of weeks and yet there's still things like the banners, items, Guardians, etc. Still to do.
This sellout to Microsoft has also unsettled me and RL is particularly draining at the moment. However, I will slowly and surely keep working on the Gsv16 update as and when I can.

Thanks for looking in and for reading this far!
thank you so much for finally making me understand what the vanilla birch door was.
thos doors are awesome. albeit some don't really fit th wood they're made out of, that's no problem, since i'm sure they will fit somewhere, as in "some building"(i don't know if that's intentional, but the acacia door fits more with what i believe is the spruce wood than acacia itself, no big deal)
just to know, are you planning on using 3d models for blocks? I actually hope not, but is good to know stuff.

Glad you like the doors.
As mentioned, I'm not decided on what wood type the new door designs will be made of, especially the spruce and jungle wood doors, but as I tried to explain, I'm not going for an exact wood material for each door...just as wide a variety of designs that will be useful and interesting. I'll be guided by what wood everyone thinks they might best fit.
No, at the moment I'm not planning on using 3d models for blocks, I honestly haven't the time to fiddle with it. It's all clever stuff, but at this stage I think it's better suited for lower res stuff as it kind of highlights the fact that everything is made up of flat rectangles...just my initial impression. I'd also rather not take a chance that things might lag more than necessary.
Those doors are lookin great glim, really cool. I usually play on survival but like to get each type of wood anyway, and in a world where mechanical chickens can lay eggs, a door that doesn't look like it's made out of the type of wood used to create it fits in fine.
hey, glim, gues what just happened. i just went to my custom map thread, wanting to edit something for five minutes, aaaaand it all went to Hell and back and backwards to hell! [snip]
so, glim, i pritty much were a cannon fodder for you, im bleeding almost to death, crawling up to you, and warning you with a dying voice:
"Do not use the editor yet, untill they fixed it in the most part, or you will suffer as much as i did, mate!"
im - im sorry, i need a break from all this, i - i cant take this any longer, bye :S *swallows vomit back in, looking beaten and very sick*
You have my sincere sympathies, mate! I still can't edit my OP, I have no signature banner, I have to repeatedly re-edit my spoilers to get them to work, swapping back and forth between BB code and the forum editor screws things up, etc, etc.

i love how minecraft forum just doesnt post, even though i clicked on "post reply"
i had some nice words about the doors, but im too pissed right now to write them again, let me just say:
glim, these door are astounding, beautifuly designed. i also have an idea for a second metal door. maybe one of the treekind is made out of brass parts and cogs. wich, if you cut it open with an axe, reveals a lot of creepy, mechanical, moving parts on the inside. using these things to create even more steampunk/garagepunk blocks. just an idea, what do you think about that, glim? :3
Not a bad idea at all, though I'm not altogether looking for more work animating cogs and such.
I had been planning on updating and changing the Jungle tree log to something more useful and it was my intention to have the black enameled metal looking door associated with the new tree log edit. In short, but not giving too much away (unless I already have and have forgotten!) the new Jungle tree log will be made of a material which might appear to be both wood and metal, appearing both tree-like in the jungle, but industrially metal-like when used for construction purposes. More details to follow...
I might be able to incorporate your idea into the log top...perhaps...but no promises, as things have to be practical!
Anyways, it's the doors I'm concentrating on at the moment and, when doing RL stuff, kind of day-dreaming ideas for the new prismarine blocks...which at the present time are also along metallic lines, unless someone can give me a good reason for using some other material. I'm still thinking of an ancient nautilus submarine, hence the continued metal theme.
im thinking of rusty, sea-moss overgrown, dent, Submarine parts. and the guardians could be automated malfunctioning paterpumps or defence turrets or something.
that should do the trick ;D
but, thats your choice. ^^
nice to hear that you kind of agree with my "one wood type should be more mechanical stuff" idea :3
I think we're thinking along the same lines here, but I'm still unsure as to whether I will have the prismarine blocks as corroded metals or exotic non-corroding alloys...or perhaps a combination, though that might look a bit strange. However, prismarine and it's pulsing veins of color leads one to think of something alien and immune to the ravages of time...mmmmm!
Also, just thinking out aloud here, if I have all the prismarine corroded and covered in sea moss it kind of limits it's use, but then I already have plenty of fairly pristine metal type blocks. Mmmmmm! I'm never very good at decisions were I have to choose between two equally good choices.
Apologies for lack of progress info and pics at the moment, apart from RL work being somewhat hectic, I've also taken on the mammoth task of trying to sort out my mind-bogglingly massive collection of texture work, which is strewn all over the place on multiple hard-drives.
Having my work stored so chaotically like this means I'm spending nearly half an hour just trying to find stuff I need to reference or improve on before I can even start a short work session. Given that I have so little leisure time as it is, this is a really frustrating and slow way to work.
Hopefully, if I don't give up halfway through, this should help make things a little easier and I can be more productive as a result...but there really is a lot of stuff to sort through.
added a video in my thread, just a notification ^^
EDIT:
you know what, i give up, thats it!
I GIVE UP ON LIFE!!
i cant take that much longer, i just cant stand it.
i dive under and will no longer post any news untill minecraft forums got finaly fixed!
there, i said it, i didnt want it to be like that, they made me do that! you could pritty much say things like:
"thanks forum, you just made him give up, good job on that, ye douche!"
i,ll work on my project completely and uterly anonymous!
still dont know whats up? take a look at my thread, ...
blatant, right?
...
anyway, i,ll go the way i wa going 1or2 years ago, just absolutely anomymously working on my stuff, bye!
(i,ll still talk to you guys, ill just not update any of my posts)
Well, I'm glad you'll still be talking to us, but I'm there with you on the frustration front! Hang in there, mate.

Curse PremiumI fear it's a little too complex really...too cluttered, but it'll do for now as a spring board. Hehe...I could always use it as an alt slime spring or something!

I've made a good few colour variations of this design too...must be mad!

.....GSv.16 New Doors WIP!
