Having finally plucked up courage to approach my computer once again, I think I owe you some kind of explanation as to why I've been absent for so long.
Well, back in March I started a lot more work on the land we have at the back of the house (to kind of help in making ends meet)...growing veg and suchlike, but it was a heck of a lot of work just preparing things (terracing and suchlike, because we live on the side of a hill). Consequently at the end of a busy day things just got a little too much for me to handle around here, especially as things just got more frustrating trying and failing to get MC Patcher to work with anything later than MC 1.7.4. So I literally just switched the computer off in frustration and concentrated on RL tasks.
Then we had a break-in and a lot of my tools and electrical equipment got nicked and in trying to upgrade security outside the house, putting up cameras/lights, etc and cutting back wild overgrowth I accidentally managed to cut the end of my index finger clean through...right through the nail bed and all! This was on my drawing hand, so I couldn't easily go back to the PC for a few weeks even if I'd wanted to, and using any sort of pen for a few weeks was just ridiculously frustrating.
The tip of my finger couldn't be stitched back on, because I'd cut it through the nail part, so it had to be steri-stripped back on. Then nearly every day afterwards I idiotically managed to bash it against something and the dressing would flood with blood and I'd have to steri-strip it all back together again. Anyways, I must be part salamander or something, because somehow appearance-wise the finger has healed quite well, but I've obviously damaged the nerves, as it feels like I have a permanent blob of plastic over it and can only vaguely sense different textures or pressure. At other times I get excruciating electric-like shocks from the thing when trying to manipulate tools, etc (nerves re-firing/reconnecting I hope!). I think it's improving though, but having had a go using my pen and tablet again a while back, I just got very frustrated and depressed about not having the same sort of control, which is ridiculous considering how small an injury the flippin' thing is!
Anyways, I'm still not very motivated at the moment to draw, as it highlights my inadequacies and reminds me of how much work there is to do to bring the pack up to scratch and RL is very busy. Couple that with the frustrations of trying to understand all the changes that have happened to MC and the forums over the spring and summer months (with a foggy aging brain) means I'm still very hesitant to tackle any new textures at the moment or pick up where I left off in April.
However, rather indulgently I have been tinkering with my city build of late, mainly as a means of easing myself back into things and trying to jump start my interest in texturing. As such I've been trying to rectify all the problems caused when I transplanted my city into a new world a couple of years ago, when Mojang mucked up the sea level leaving me with a city that was one block higher (water and all) over quite a few world chunks and leaving me with large areas of sliced through mountains, etc. So I've been building a vast wall with many towers, arches, lock gates, etc. as it's the kind of project that doesn't require a lot of inspiration, just lots of repetitive landscaping and building, but it's conveniently rectifying most of the anomalies that made it a little depressing exploring outwards from the center of my city. It's a huge task though, but it's a pleasure at the end of the day with the little time I have and gives a nice backdrop/framework to the city, dividing it loosely into old and new sections through which road and rail links to outlying suburbs and industries can spread...if I don't chop any more fingers off!
So, I am still alive, if lacking enthusiasm, but hopefully will eventually get round to answering your posts and comments again, when I've figured out how to use the new forum setup! You'll also have to bear with me not being so quick to update all the new stuff that's been promised by Mojang as, besides my finger problem, I am completely and utterly out of the loop...everything just goes right over my head at the moment, especially MC Patcher stuff! Any help listing all the promised new stuff along with what it all means might help, but don't go to a lot of bother.
I had done a few improvements for 1.8 up to Mar/Apr which you can see if you look back through the thread, and even if I can't bring myself to work on more stuff when 1.8 and MC Patcher finally come out the other end and start working properly, I will upload what I've already worked on, but please understand I don't want to get round to any kind of updating until I absolutely have to ie, after 1.8 is properly out.
I didn't intend this to be as long as this so I'll sign off for now, but rest assured I am largely in one piece and will upload pics of anything I manage to work on, even if it's only a few pics of a boring city wall!
Enjoy the rest of the summer, guys, and thanks to all still interested in the old GS pack.
Glad to see you again Glimmar, not so glad to hear about the finger but such is life I suppose. Hope it heals up well enough that you forget you ever injured it in the first place.
The main changes we have seen have been all the new model related stuff. This has brought with it vanilla random textures (random models really) and the ability to disable hardcoded color tinting on blocks. (Still can't change the tint color though without something like MCpatcher) The model format is a tad complex though so I'd suggest waiting till someone makes a decent free model creation tool before poking that too heavily.
As for new textures/blocks/things:
Slime Blocks, 3 new stones, 4 underwater temple blocks including a new light block, bunnies, banners, armor stands, red sandstone (and associated steps/slabs), a darkness sensor (toggle for the daylight sensor), 2 new underwater monsters, 2 items related to the underwater temple, and associated bunny parts. (I -think- that's the full general list, see my 'Latest Changes' thread for the actual detailed list.)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
Oh wow Glim! It really is amazing what a complex and resilient yet delicate machine the human body is. I broke the ring finger on my non-dominant hand two years ago this week, just after the birth of my son. I felt completely helpless at times when trying to change diapers or even clothe him. And sitting at the keyboard with a splint was at turns frustrating and mildly funny.
Not to make you feel bad or to put any kind of pressure on you to get back in the saddle any faster than you are willing, but I haven't played MC since shortly before your hiatus. I get burned out when I jump from world to world or between modpacks, and that is exactly what happened. I took some time away, but said that when Glim updates his pack I want to see all his hard work up close. Since it has been a longer hiatus than anyone expected, MC has been an afterthought for me for months. But I'd check back in periodically just to see if you made it back or not. I'd worried that you had taken seriously ill, and that we had no way of wishing you well besides the forum here. I hope your finger heals up well, for your own well being and peace of mind more than a desire to see new GS artwork.

You forgot about the Endermites! But then again everyone does. Also, the just-added armor stands. We are also now able to make transparent items, and apparently armor, but I think the armor will only show transparency on other players/mobs, not you.
Another thing is the ability to change the beacon color by running it through stained glass. This just adds a tint to the layers below it (base texture + color layer = final color output) and color layers can be stacked to make different colors (blue + red = purple, etc.).
Unfortunately this effect doesn't desaturate the base texture so adding red to Glimmar's already green-ish texture makes a brown-ish color.
Crikey, Glimmar! I hope that you get back full function on the finger!
Weird as it may sound, you are right that the tingles and 'electric like shocks' may be signs of the nerves reconnecting - best of luck with that.
And I really hope that your enthusiasm rekindles as well - maybe the thing to do is some inspiration reading. (I do not know what steampunk you have read - but it seems that Vernsean Fantasy has displaced Dystopian Retrotechnology. But I highly recommend watching the recent(ish) reissue of Metropolis - much of the missing footage was found in Argentina and the film has almost regained its original two and a half hours of length.
Thanks so much for the kind comments above, guys. Just flicking back and delving into my posts for the first time has showed there are some very nice people on these forums. I will do my best to catch up with things...especially requests and to say individual thanks for the concern if I don't get cold feet again! You're a great bunch of people though.
Anyways, here's some pics of my city, wall, dock channel progress, just to get things rolling again, followed by some catch up replies to older posts.
Click the spoiler for more pics:
The walls have three internal levels connected by ladders plus the upper outer level. Towers have multiple levels and when finished it will be possible to walk the entire wall on any level and circumnavigate the city. I haven't decided on positioning of window slits, etc. All water channels will be fortified and there's an example lock gate system large enough for cargo ships in the pics below. The gate towers are designed to hold and slide the gates in and out as necessary. All walls and towers follow the contours of the land as best I can, so there will be plenty of variation.
I love this texture pack so much I'm so glad it still exists.
You guys are very kind, but I know my limits and the limitations of the pack, but it suits me for my purposes and it's nice that others still enjoy it too.
I recently went on a little trek around my world to try and locate the enderportal dungeon in my world, and when I tried to return to my base, I discovered, much to my dismay, that while the compass in your texture pack looks very nice, due to the needle's limited range of movement, it actually isn't much use as a compass, and at times is even actively misleading.
Yeah, I really need to make my own compass, but The_Fool76's kind offering of a Geiger counter style edit has served my purposes on the surface very well so far, I never really visit the nether now (probably shows, eh?). I did start some work on a new/old-fangled contraption earlier this year, so I'll try and dig the work out and see if I can make head or tail (or should that be 'needle') of it.
Hey Glim, I am wanting to create my own resource pack that is a combination of other packs for my own personal use. What would I have to import from this pack to keep the ctm for certain blocks and to not import the animation on others?
You're asking for a lot of instructions there, mate and as I'm really way behind on understanding my own ctm instructions now, with so much to do, and already a rising sense of dread at everything involved in supporting this pack, I'd have to say in all honesty that you'll have to experiment and check out the MC Patcher and other guide threads.
This is a great pack Glimmar. It's one of the pack I use when I'm build stuff for maps. I also use it to just play Minecraft.
Many thanks, mate. MC Patcher is one of the few threads my email was still getting updates from, when I actually switched my PC on (until the last couple of weeks when nothing has been coming through!) and I've followed every bit of help you've provided over there and it's been both kind and amazingly helpful, even if a lot of it has gone straight over the top of my head.
I'll be picking your brains for sure when I find out half my ctm doesn't work anymore after 1.8.
Just wondering if anyone is interested in skin support for Pam's Harvestcraft?
Ooo! If you have anything finished and you can make a little banner, it would be nice to create a space in the Emporium in the OP to show your stuff off and make it readily available in a place where folk can easily find it...if I can figure out the new forum changes.
I thought i'd show a little icon I made for a Skype group I'm in,
it's not exactly a MC icon though. Only part that is kinda a MC
block is the one in the center. (I'll remove the textures if I
shouldn't use it)
hehehe, i feel you.
i am pritty much tracking after already existing, great games as well. i,ll get my hands on BF3 in a few days, to play with my friend online on xbox :3 after im done with portal 2, Amnesia-(proudly), and mirrors edge!
i know these games were made long ago, but my advantage is: i still feel the game very freshly,
(i,ve got them on my disk drive for long enough)
while other people slowly but shure forget em` if you know what i mean :9
... or its just a bunch of time differentces, wich made me play em`too late
eytherway, i think its NEVER too late to dive into the magic ^^
... btw i am not finished with amnesia yet. I started today, but still have to go through the ..., ugh, mortuary :,C
but anyway, your pack is so great i can,t resound that enough! keep up the great work, i am using your pack right now in one of my survival maps, no big deal
Well, when I did switch my machine on, and figured some way of controlling the mouse with a swollen finger, I tried to relax with a few steam games. I think Borderlands 2 held me for the longest period, the rest I just dipped into and then enjoyed a few weeks experimenting with survival vanilla MC and various mod collections...Life in the Woods with my first experience of shaders was great fun for a while, especially as it seemed to fit in with what I was doing in RL!
Has anyone begun working on a Biomes O' Plenty texture mod? I've been working on one for my own personal use and it's about half done, I might finish it if anyone is interested.
Don't forget that if you get something together that others can use, then make a banner and I'll create a shop 'booth' in the OP, then users can more easily find it in the future. Keep it original or based on my textures, but I'm sure you are already aware of that, as most MC forum members have it drummed into them at every opportunity.
keep up the great work, i realy want to use the new stuff you showed us so far
im hyped for it ^^
my steampunk survival map itches to use this pack x)
Thanks, mate. Glad you're looking forward to the new stuff, even if it falls way short of all the new stuff Mojang have been squeezing in to the 1.8 update. Sorry it's been a long time since the last update. However, the stuff I did up to March/April will be available soon after 1.8 comes out if I don't panic, and if I can figure out how the the latest MC Patcher works, and if can even find half the stuff I'd begun work on. A lot of 'ifs' I know, but but being the chaotic numskull I am I'm amazed anything still works in this pack. As mentioned in my previous post, I haven't been able to properly get some ctm things to work with any version of MC or MCPatcher after 1.7.4. eg. my new random grass sides for example are just completely missing after 1.7.4
My simple plan of attack is to do nothing until the 1.8 dust settles and then start wailing very loudly in the MCPatcher thread for some help.
Just trying to tidy up my OP, as various BB codes don't seem to be working as intended. As soon as I tried to edit header text color, bold, etc commands, I lost all my direct youtube video boxes, as can be currently seen in the OP, and I can't get 'em back. The youtube addresses haven't changed and as far as I know, by looking at how others have displayed youtube vids in their posts, I'm still using the 'media' command correctly, but every single one of the vids throughout the OP is scuppered!
I'm currently going through the OP stripping out all color, bold and size commands in a vain attempt to simplify things and it's driving me nuts!
Any of you experts out there have any info on what could be going wrong?
[edit] Things just get worse! Every time I try to switch to BB to view the markup, everything gets garbled, with bold commands dropped in everywhere, other codes being dropped, etc. If I load in my back up OP text which I have saved for just such a crisis as this (which has all the BB commands in the right place and totally looked ok before the changes) as soon as I save or switch back to the normal forum editor view the whole lot gets mucked up! Totally frustrating experience and a complete waste of time!! 4 hours trying to sort the mess out and my hand/forearm is killing me with the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome...what a mess!
Well, I've tried folks, but this is just putting me off trying to work on any more new textures. When I can't even straighten out some text here, what's the point in wasting even more time on the art. Editing the OP was never as difficult as this before.
Good advice Auld Grump and iuy8ocwim1e, thanks, I need to relax more and forget the OP for now.
Thanks Cynips, it makes me feel somewhat less useless hearing that others are getting the same issues. I'll have a look at the Youtube URL addresses, but I'm pretty sure the forum editor was altering some of those too (checked them against my backup text and some were certainly being altered). I was also getting massive slow down when trying to type stuff in, ie 5 secs per letter! No slow down in BB code, but then when I switched that off it would randomly garble extra commands into the body of the text...couldn't progress either way!
Sitting down early evening to try and edit a few things in the OP turned into a mammoth decent into chaos...hence the hissy fit! There's no worse feeling than trying to advance a few steps forward and ending up worse off. All rolled up with my arm and wrist aching and going numb made things seem even more urgent and hopeless.
I'm hoping the pain and cold pins and needles in my arm is just with me compensating for the way I'm trying to use my index finger, in that little changes can cause fundamental changes back up the chain of muscles and tendons. However, I'm also getting this right up to my shoulder when I'm driving or resting my arm comfortably on the table! I wonder if I've trapped a nerve or something? I was throwing a ball on the beach over summer and getting shoulder pains then. Obviously if this gets much worse, or persists, I'll be off to the doctors to see if it's an injury of some kind. I'm dreading going down the line of full blown carpel tunnel syndrome, as my wife has that pretty bad, had an operation on one wrist to improve things and she's even worse off with that now!
Needs more suspended railway, airships, factories and apartments plus an Imperial palace somewhere. Crazy that I have yet to build some sizable ships of the air over my city, but being so special I was always putting them off for a better time!
ps. Is it no longer possible to make images larger than a forum page width?
Best advice I can give for wrestling with the forum is to keep a text file with the original code for the post and edit that and then copy and paste the result into the forum rather than trying to edit from within the forum itself. I also personally avoid the built in rich text editor like the plague. It's good for very basic formatting but the moment you try to get fancy it starts breaking down.
Another thing you might want to consider is breaking your post up into smaller sub-sections and putting those in as replies and then direct linking to those replies from the original post. (You can get a direct link to a given reply by clicking the #134 in the upper right corner of it.) The less 'fancy' content you have in a single post the more reliable the forum seems when editing it.

Howdy, Mate!
I didn't get a chance to catch up with the greetings you posted before, but it's nice to speak again.
Yeah, I already have all my OP in text form, always have, because I learned never to trust either the forum or myself not to muck something up at some stage, and that's where I've always done my editing, but even reloading that after an edit doesn't fix the Youtube windows and frustratingly all the heading text sizes seem to be ignored too.
I was guessing by how slow editing was in the forum fancy editor that I needed to simplify things, but I'm not sure what you mean about breaking up sections in the OP and re-posting as replies. Do you mean literally posting a reply here in my thread and then linking to it in my OP? Wouldn't that end up getting even more confusing and complicated? Well, for me that is.
In any event I vastly need to simplify the OP, if not for the forum, most certainly for myself, but that involves the sort of editing and design I most dislike in my present frame of mind.

Yup, make the first post into more of an index and put the bulk of the content elsewhere in the thread. You will have links to it so it shouldn't be too confusing to manage. (Click the link in the first post, or just bookmark it.) Of course it IS a bit of work to do that so I can completely understand why you might not want to. I confess though that my main motivation in even suggesting that though is slightly selfish. Your first post tends to do bad things to the oooooold computer I use at work due to the amount of stuff in it. >_> Every time I accidentally go to it, the poor thing starts hyperventilating (the CPU fan spins all the way up).

Welcome back, and I hope everything goes well from now for as long as it can.

Haha! Sorry about the mighty mess up there and the old work PC!
Actually, when I think it about it in one of my more lucid moments, chopping the OP up a section at a time, should make it a more manageable task over time. Thanks for that.
Would it be acceptable to re-use old posts do you think, rather than confuse things by posting currently?
You've returned! I'm sorry to hear about all the events, but I'm amazed at your steadfast resolve

Hiya, Squid!
Lol! Don't know about steadfast resolve...more like 'addiction' me thinks! There really isn't any other game that quite lets you do so much to escape and personalise it so much in the process and there are a lot of very nice people involved in the process too! Though if I didn't like building stuff so much, both in real life and in games, I think I'd have long since given up!
Hope everything is going ok with your pack. I say that with some vagueness, because as mentioned previously, I no longer get emails through from all the threads I once followed. When I finally got back to switching my PC on there were a few emails from threads I was following, then they just stopped. I've tried going back through some of 'em and unsubscribing and resubscribing, without making any difference! I still don't get any notifications.
I was looking for your signature banner, but it isn't there I quickly noticed. That made me think to check my own...obviously something else that needs attention!
Thanks for the welcome though. 'Tis much appreciated.
Yes things have been breaking all over the place since you've been gone coincidence? My signature included. I've only just really fixed up my thread now, and that involved really mucking it up.
With regards to my pack... it's not exactly 'flourishing' but I don't really mind. My pack is now mostly for the server a buddy and I run, so it gets enough usage by the general public to leave me satisfied.
Thanks for having an interest though
Hey, Glim! Nice to see that you're back. A shame to hear about the finger, and I hope it heals properly.
I remember a couple years back, a web-comic artist which I follow had a similar experience, had a piece of glass cut up his hand and sever the tendons on his thumb. He was completely unable to do anything with that hand for a few weeks, and it took him a couple months of rehab to regain functionality, but he's right back to making his comics again. Hopefully your recovery will go smoothly as well.
As for the forum changes, I'm sure things will sort themselves out eventually. The Fools suggestion of turning the OP into an index sounds like a good idea. Maybe just keep the banners for each section on the OP and use them as a link to later posts. I would also say that repurposing older posts might be a good place for the sections, although it might be a good idea to leave the original content of the post (maybe at the end, either in a spoiler box or after a break) and a note somewhere stating that these posts have been repurposed.
Again, hope things get better for you. Try to relax, don't stress out over too much, and take your time getting back to this. There's no rush, and we all understand that you may want to take a bit of a break while recuperating. We're just glad that you're back again.

Curse PremiumHaving finally plucked up courage to approach my computer once again, I think I owe you some kind of explanation as to why I've been absent for so long.

Curse PremiumYou forgot about the Endermites! But then again everyone does. Also, the just-added armor stands. We are also now able to make transparent items, and apparently armor, but I think the armor will only show transparency on other players/mobs, not you.

Unfortunately this effect doesn't desaturate the base texture so adding red to Glimmar's already green-ish texture makes a brown-ish color.

Curse PremiumAnyways, here's some pics of my city, wall, dock channel progress, just to get things rolling again, followed by some catch up replies to older posts.
Click the spoiler for more pics:
You guys are very kind, but I know my limits and the limitations of the pack, but it suits me for my purposes and it's nice that others still enjoy it too.
Many thanks, mate. Much appreciated.
Ooo! If you have anything finished and you can make a little banner, it would be nice to create a space in the Emporium in the OP to show your stuff off and make it readily available in a place where folk can easily find it...if I can figure out the new forum changes.
Very nice...I'm flattered. Don't forget to give me credit where possible though. Thanks.
Thanks, mate.
No probs, BrokenEye.
I'm tempted to use at least another stained glass block for a another type of girder sometime.
Don't forget that if you get something together that others can use, then make a banner and I'll create a shop 'booth' in the OP, then users can more easily find it in the future. Keep it original or based on my textures, but I'm sure you are already aware of that, as most MC forum members have it drummed into them at every opportunity.
Thanks, Radium.
Only the City Wall pics above I'm afraid.
That's already been done to a great extent by the likes of Megistus and ksheep...check out the 'Mod Emporium' section in the OP.

Curse PremiumI'm currently going through the OP stripping out all color, bold and size commands in a vain attempt to simplify things and it's driving me nuts!
Heck, maybe just play with Minecraft for a while - just to enjoy the game.

Curse PremiumThanks Cynips, it makes me feel somewhat less useless hearing that others are getting the same issues.
Sorry...waffling again!

Curse PremiumNeeds more suspended railway, airships, factories and apartments plus an Imperial palace somewhere. Crazy that I have yet to build some sizable ships of the air over my city, but being so special I was always putting them off for a better time!
ps. Is it no longer possible to make images larger than a forum page width?

Curse PremiumAnother thing you might want to consider is breaking your post up into smaller sub-sections and putting those in as replies and then direct linking to those replies from the original post. (You can get a direct link to a given reply by clicking the #134 in the upper right corner of it.) The less 'fancy' content you have in a single post the more reliable the forum seems when editing it.

Curse PremiumCheckout the 'Mod Emporium' section.
Thanks. Have fun...before 1.8 surfaces.

Curse PremiumYup, make the first post into more of an index and put the bulk of the content elsewhere in the thread.
You've returned! I'm sorry to hear about all the events, but I'm amazed at your steadfast resolve
Welcome back, and I hope everything goes well from now for as long as it can.

Curse PremiumHaha!
With regards to my pack... it's not exactly 'flourishing' but I don't really mind. My pack is now mostly for the server a buddy and I run, so it gets enough usage by the general public to leave me satisfied.
Thanks for having an interest though
